just in case anyone doesnt know about this:

http://store.smithmicro.com/productDetails.aspx?id=20136

worth telling your friends about. im not sure what is/is not included in Debut (and i dont have the bandwidth to download it and find out), or if it has any of the newer features like SSS, but it still looks like a great place to get non-Poser owners started.

cheers,

That version is a gutted Poser 8. No material room editing, although you can use any material file but you have to get somebody else to give you even the tiniest modification. You could not, for example, use most of the shaders I publish, where I give you just one leather shader and expect you to change the color parameter inside, unless you are fine with black leather. grin

It also has no Python scripting.

I still can't get a clear answer on whether or not it will accept weight mapped figures. I'm assuming that's a big no, cause I would think that info would be readily available ;).

edit: whoops, crossposted BB ;). Thanks for the answer. I thought as much.

It is Poser 8, so no.

I bet they are coming out with Poser Debut [next version] real soon, and this would be why they would make Poser Debut [original] be free.

But I don't know anything for sure - haven't talked to SM for a while.

hey, a free 'basic' Poser 8 is still a pretty cool way to get new people introduced to Poser.  it will still load all sortsof premade freestuff, wont it?

as for editing MATs, thats a large limitation for an advanced user but most beginning Poser users rely on premade MATs anyways -- its unlikely that they are going to dive into shadernodes right away.

be a bit more optimistic folks - its Christmas after all :)

takes forever to d/l too.  Dunno if SMs servers are a bit overloaded (or their interwebz pipe) but I gave up in the end.

('sides - it sounds like it's worse than my Poser 7 :biggrin:)

It's better than Poser 7. It has IDL and lights with inverse square falloff. That's a huge improvement in lighting abilities.

If you have P7 for editing, and Debut as a free upgraded renderer, that would be sweet, actually. You can run both and edit while rendering, and the renderer is better and faster even if you don't use any of the new realism features.

more than likely their servers are being hammered right now.

BB, I render in either Vue or 3DS Max/MentalRay so the new lighting etc. isn't all that much use to me but it's good to know.  I might try doing what you suggest and see what it looks like - you can never have too many render engines :)

I completely agree with Gabriel, here. It's a gift! That is indeed lovely of SM to provide that for us. I've got a friend who I showed some of my stuff to, and she's quite keen to have a go, but hasn't much money (nursing student) - what an ideal way to gert her started.

I just wish CP provided another way to download the files, though - I'm getting download speeds of 30-40kbs... the first attempt failed after running all night. Oh well, it's a gift. I'll just try again 😄

I hate the damn link expiration. When I installed PP2012 I went to install Miki2 but I must have deleted her install file when I was making room last time my HD filled up. That was before they started the whole expiring downloads thing and now I'm left without my favorite Poser figure and 75% of my old scenes are useless.

I can see her in my purchases but I'm not going to spend more money on something I already bought and should have available for a download. The retro site receipt even has the miki2 serial number listed. Bah. :mad:

See, I feel the months time they give you should be long enough (unless you're unable to download it every time you try of course). I'm still amazed at all the places that allow you to download your stuff years after your purchase.

Maybe it's because I backup my Poser stuff religiously ;).

I was amazed when I downloaded a scuba set I lost in a computer accident last. What was amazing is that it isn't even offered for sale any more. Now that is service. I have everything backed up now, also. Even still have copies of Poser 7 and 8. Man, I'm beginning to sound like I know what I'm doing. Scary.

IIRC the DMG of My entire install of poser 6 was only around 600 Megs.

while this is clearly useless to me I think It is good that SM is releasing this version as Free, for a while,

I downloaded Debut last night and installed it this morning, and can't for the life of me, find where to turn on IDL. I was under the impression it was in the Advanced Render Settings, which Debut does not have.

perhaps its enabled by default at higher render settings? either way youd have to turn on raytracing.

try creating a simple scene (sphere on floor), maxing out the render setting slider with raytracing checked on, and render and see - its pretty obvious if IDL is on or not.

In which case, it's not useful to anybody who has any regular Poser edition. Maybe sort of useful to somebody with Poser 5, but who is that?

It doesn't have tone mapping, either. Surprising, because that is a great feature for those who cannot manage light levels to save their lives.

No harm. no foul.

I technically don't need it since I have Octane for rendering as well (attached image I let render about 30 minutes, and has only emitters for light).

I just thought it would be useful to me as a content creator, to be able to set up and test how ambient material would react in IDL, since I only have Poser 7.

Hi There!

The problem with the slow download has been resolved, and there is now a load balancing solution in place!

Remember that for all you experts Poser Debut may seem "crippled" but for a new user, kid in your family interested in graphics, or even a user of Manga Studio or Anime Studio...it's the perfect powered version to get started and then there's always an upgrade path if you need more!

This comparison chart may help those of you trying to figure out what version is better:  http://poser.smithmicro.com/comparison.html

Happy Holidays!

Poser Debut is shipped with Python but the faciliy to run scripts has been removed from the UI. However, scripts can also be run from a .pz2 pose file and that still works!

Many Python scripts can be made to work just by crafting a .pz2 file to launch them. So long as the Python scripts don't reference missing UI elements (such as trying to attach themselves to the non-existant Python scripts palette) they will work.

For the IDL demo I 'borrowed' D3D's 'Render Firefly' script from my copy of Poser Pro 2010 and launched it in Poser Debut via a .pz2 file, as described above. Not only did the script run fine, but it gave me access to all the rendering options that SM had removed from the Poser Debut UI.

Of course, if the only version of Poser you have is Debut then you won't be able to use D3D's script, but it's quite easy to write a Python script to switch on and configure IDL (and tonemapping) so if there was a demand for it I'm sure someone would write one - it's only a few lines of code.

Hmm... Just a thought from a layman;   Would it be possible to have a script open a file dialog to call another script?  This way one could load a variety of scripts from a single pose file..

Of course, although it's quite easy to make a Pose file for each script which would be more convenient.

I'm surprised there's not been much interest in this. We have a very cheap (even free for some) 3D application which is supposed to be missing several key features, but once you find a way to run Python scripts then some of those key features can be made accessible!

I'm not a Poser Debut user myself, but if I was I'd be interested in these developments!

Poser Debut can even run Pose2Lux. With Luxrender as your renderer and Poser Debut as your scene creator you have a very powerful setup, I'd say. The lack of a Material Room is also immaterial (excuse the pun!) if you're asigning materials in Pose2Lux anyway.

Yes use the poser.DialogFileChooser method to browse for the path then:-

Win
poser.ExecFile(filepath)

Mac
execfile(filepath)

I've quickly written such a script but it is firing it off twice, not quite sure why, but I do recall seeing this before. Must go out now but will return to it later.

Snarlygribbly ( ) posted Fri, 06 January 2012 at 1:05 PM

You can avoid it firing twice by adopting the following construct:

{
    version
    {
        number 6
    }
}
{
    version
    {
        number 6
    }
    runPythonScript ...:scriptname.py
}

The example assumes the script is in the same folder as the pz2 file.
