Subject: Skin Shaders

pacanne ( ) posted Thu, 12 January 2012 at 8:23 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 1:54 PM

I have been perenially perplexed by ways to improve skin appearance in Poser. I got Real Skin shader, which was pretty awsome, but after over-using it, I found it had its limits. Perhaps it was because I didn't know how to work it well enough, but at times I felt it compromised the transparency of the skin...I thought it might be interesting to try the Elite Human Surface Shader. I was able to get the product, but am not clear whether it works for Poser or not....if it isn't, is there an equivalent that can enhance skin luminosity and depth for Poser?

Which version of Poser?

No EHSS is D|S plug I think

So is that TTFN or TANSTAAFL?

I have P7....

Unlike the Real Skin Shader script, VSSProp is not restricted by light settings and specific skin textures.  Now, the misconception about the prop itself, Bagginsbill intended it to easily apply shader configurations to all props & figures material zones with just a push of a button.  However, the prop comes with a bonus, a skin texture template to improve the appearance of any figure in the market.  It has gone through several iterations to keep up with the current Poser versions, but the original VSSPR3 is still compatible with P7.  Search the forum for the VSS thread which is very extensive reading.  Then pick up BB's script from his download site, conveniently located in his post signature.  There are many who follow his teaching and actively apply what he has to offer.

Thanks hborre,

Did some searches but was a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff that came up. Do you recommend a place where I can find his download site? Did a search under BB and Bagginsbill and didn't come up with anything conclusive....

I am new to all this and I hope you'll forgive my unforgivable lassitude and incomptence....any indications would be most appreciated:)

Many thanks--I just downloaded it. I'll see if I can make any sense of it. Thanks again.

They meant you should search for me in the FORUM. Every one of my posts has my signature, which links to my site.

I have written thousands of tutorials and explanations of all sorts of Poser things and published hundreds of materials.

Whatever you're looking for, put the words in the Rendo forum search engine, put my name in the author field, and search more than a day ago. You'll almost always find something.

I'm surprised you've been around over a year and didn't notice me.

Also, I wrote the Poser library GUI, so don't bitch about it. grin

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

You can improve the skin-to a point in P7. P9/PoserPro2012 made a big jump forward in skin realism with their implementation of subsurface scattering- (not perfect-but a big improvement over not having it!).

If getting more realistic skin is of interest-and you can upgrade- I'd consider it! :)

Also BagginsBill has been behind most of the more realistic shaders-posted on the RDNA forum.

To Mister Baggins... the guru!!!

"Also, I wrote the Poser library GUI, so don't bitch about it. grin "

I don't bitch about it... I use something else...

With regards though.

Well, I've been on for a year but had a LONG absence in the middle, only coming back now. Please excuse me. I just downloaded one of BB's shaders, but don't see a difference when I apply it...I must be doing something wrong; oh well, back to instructional manuals....:) And, I imagine that P9 and P2012 are outrageously expensive??? I'd love to get them but already P8 was totally overpriced.

Unless you are REALLY into it-an upgrade to P9 should suit you. I'm not sure what the upgrade price is-check smithmicro
