Subject: dragon head

Hi all , I've already posted WIPs of this model on the Characters Creators forum, and now that the head is finished-finished i thought i could show it here . The model was all made in the Vertex Modeller, with a bit of help of the Spline Modeller for teeth and horns . The poly count is 8028 facets ( without the eyes ) . The work is excellent. My only conern would be that some of the teeth seem to angle forward, which would be hard to envision from a functional perspective. Fangs tend to angle back into the mouth to catch and hold prey. Pointing outwards allows prey to slip off and makes working them into the mouth towards swallowing difficult. Unless the teeth "hinge" and shift angles somehow, like a snake's fangs do. As I said, though -- great modeling work.

Woa! I can smell the dragon breath from here. Very nice. The flaps on the side of the head seem particularly well done. I agree that reversing the direction of the teeth would enhance the reality (?) of the model.

Nicely done! The teeth are pronated but I like the look of it. It looks more agressive this way.

I think it looks fantastic! I don't think you need to worry too much about realism. (Don't tell anyone, but I'm starting to think there never really were any dragons.)

Thanks for your nice comments, boys and girls, The teeth was a issue since the beginning . At first, i've looked for some references in my old RPG magazines . I've found a picture of a metal figure that was amazing, so i've decided to base my design on it . The teeth were made this way, i knew it was not very believable and that some viewers would see it wasn't realistic . But think about it : does a dragon have to use his teeth, while he can punch, scratch, catch his prey with his back legs, use his tail as a whip and his breath of fire ? Like this, he can still use his fangs as a weapon, not to catch his foes but just to hurt them . Also, he looks a bit like a snake : snakes swallow their prey, so their fangs are not used to tear the food . There could be some venom in there too . So that's why the teeth are made like this . And also because it looks cool ! ;) to Miss Nancy : i don't know how i will texture it at all ! I guess it will be another hunt for the good reference . Do you guys know a site with some good pictures of reptiles ? to Servo : i'm concerned about posing too . This should be my first attempt, but i'll have to wait a bit for that . to CCP : How long ? Between 20 and 50 hours, i'd say . I don't count . Thanks again, litst

Wow! Superior work Litst! My hat is off to you for your grasp of the vertex modeler (we call it the mesh form modeler in RDS). That's the one tool that has totally escaped me. I always thought it was alien technology intended to identify the geniuses of earth so that the invaders could take them up to the mother ship and... Well, never mind that. I'm sure you'll be fine. That's amazing!! You should put out a how to book. This program is lacking in that department. Every book store has tons of books on 3DS, Maya, etc. What about Carrara? Ray dream had a bunch in it's day. Think about it. I'd buy it!

Thanks for your comments :) Julian - I'm going to do the body AND it's a project for another time ! ;) In fact, i've already finished the back legs . if you have loaded the Animal (Begley) folder in your shaders, it has several that might be useful, like elephant, dinosaur, reptile, etc. one of the free zygote dragon texture maps available here might also be applicable
