Subject: The first thing I experienced in Vue 10 was a bug

Paloth ( ) posted Fri, 03 February 2012 at 9:51 AM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 9:31 AM

When I load the "El Nicho Rough Rock" into an empty scene in Vue 10 infinite/xstream, it causes everything to disappear except the ground and sky and the selection boundary of the rock. If I do a preview render and close it, the rock (along with everything else) will appear in the scene window. Also, if I delete the rock after everything has disappeared, everything goes back to normal.

Strangely, this problem occurs regardless of whether the display mode is set to Open GL 21 Shader 4 or fixed hardware pipeline mode.

Can someone test this and verify that it isn’t a system specific issue due to my computer being of higher quality than anything anyone has ever conceived of in his or her wildest imaginings?

Verified.  The work-around is to raise the rock up out of the camera frame and then drop it.  It will be on the ground again and properly displayed, along with other parts of the scene.  Report it as a bug.  Something is wrong with that rock's displacement generation when first brought into a scene.  Subsequent rocks of that name still suffer the problem.

It's not a computer system/OS problem, but a code problem in Vue.  The e-on filters (Lee and Steve) should be able to repoduce on their end without asking you for your first born in order to get the bug mentioned to a programmer.

Ok, thanks for the verification. I will get around to making that report eventually.

Your lucky, anytime I load a sample scene from Vue 10, it crashes when I click render, however my own scenes from vue 10 and previous versions load fine, odd.

When I attempt to load sample 1 scene 001 Promenade, Vue 10 crashes every time. Are we the first to test this stuff?

Welcome to the club.  Vue is the buggiest software I've ever encountered.  E-on spent too much hacking their program into smaller and smaller pieces and not enough time on crushing bugs.  The renters (buyers) of the software are the beta testers.

On the positive side, most things seem to be working ok, and I can load Poser Pro 2012 weight mapped figures now. (This is important since I create weight mapped Poser figures.) The rendering seems pretty quick on my system, though I'm sure the 16 cpus have something to do with that. Mileage may vary.

You're gonna make me look for my extras content files...  Ok.

I remember that scene needing a store-bought plant when loaded in Vue 9.  It would complain, but still load.  This time in Vue 10...  it looks like a slightly different scene file.  It loaded without crash for me.  Maybe they removed the offending object?  Because it looks unfinished now.

The "Rock & Clouds modified" scene next to the one you mentioned crashes Vue 10 Infinite build 10008456 when I exit after loading it.

And yes, we are the first and only to test this stuff.  I'm fighting with E-on now about some basic input/output stuff.  Their support stuff should at least know how to use a computer before trying to trouble-shoot anything in regards to Vue.

I remember now.  Eco-system mats are broken in build 10008456.  That's why the scenes look wrong in the Main Camera previews.

I don't think the programmers use the software.  If they did, they would find bugs within 2 minutes.  And this is just with the default scene at start time.  Maybe they are not allowed to fix their code until they are told to?  And they can't volunteer to fix their own code they realized they botched up when testing anew build.  Oh, that's right.  They don't test their own builds.

Load Snowy Landscape from Samples 1 and tell me how many "?"s you see in the objects browser?  Was there a language barrier or are the objects just not for Vue 10?  I don't see "X"s in front of any objects, so I think I don't have to buy anything before opening the scene.

lol, There are more ????s than I can count in the time available. This kind of thing happens when the language font is missing on the system.

Ok.  In other apps, missing fonts will give me boxes to look at instead of characters.

Right now I am going through some pains with E-on.  They want me to pay them extra so that I can download their current EEF update for Vue to see if it has bugs in it still or not.

I should not have to pay them so I can do their job for them.

10.5 is just around the corner and I'm not convinced that they're working on the list of bugs reported for version 10.  These are basic bugs that they introduced in the code that was working fine before and has nothing to do with any of the new features.  Basic stuff like renaming an object or material and having it stay renamed.  Dragging an object and having it not change color.  Moving the camera and not having soft shadows or lens blur values change on you. These are just examples of the kind of GUI problems Vue has that it didn't before.  If I tell Vue to render in OpenGL for an animated render so I have a quick reference, I want an OpenGL render.  Not a preview render.  Not a broadcast render.

The batch rendering was cool in 9.5 because you could render in the background on one machine using some DOS prompt thing.  Now that is broke in version 10.  The thing runs about 70 slower than if you render inside of Vue's GUI.  It also makes farm rendering slower if you use this on your network.

The terrain editor works.  I hope they don't breathe on it.

With e-on you have to love them enough to over look the bugs, the over pricing, paid incremental updates, and the cornucopia bugs.  With e-on you have to accept them warts and all.

I get way better support from Avid for a 4-year-old discountinued $35 Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate video editing program I bought from Amazon at discount last year, that they didn't even produce.  They are up to version 15 now, but still bend over backwards for version 9 customers even!

Another great company is the 3-man group over at 3D-Coat.  Mention a bug there and it is fixed a week later and an update is posted.  Luxology (the guys that designed Nexus which powers their modo software) actually fixes bugs they find on their own without waiting for a user to find and report them.  Then there is Pixologic.  They don't post bug fixes... ever.  They only post free upgrades to all registered users of their software.

I'll be happy with e-on if they fix HDR rendering without telling me I have to pay them another $200 - $300.  E-on treats bug reports as new feature requests.

Shawn, who did you ask who told you that you have to pay to get the EEF to check if the problems you reported are solved?! That's scary! :-(

Regards

Mike

I have a complete set of Kanji and Katakana character fonts mounted on my machine, (along with the Windows Bi-directional Font system, and a set of standard Chinese characters). I am seeing Japanese characters on the "Snowy Landscape." Perhaps you are missing the Bi-Directional character facility on your computer?????????
