Subject: Obj file optimizer?

SamTherapy ( ) posted Fri, 02 March 2012 at 10:30 AM · edited Wed, 08 January 2025 at 3:39 PM

I seem to remember Anton posting about an app which can help speed up loading times by optimizing a figure's obj file.

There was something about the way an obj is written and stored that means it looks here there and everywhere for the next bit, which is obviously not a good idea if you want the thing to load fast.  I noticed several of my own models take a geological age to load, even if they are relatively simple.

Anyone know of this app and if so, where it can be found?  Also, are there any caveats to be aware of?

TIA

Maybe MeshLab?

Only Caveat is that I'm too stoooopud to know what half of what it can do might be.

STOMP by somebody

A word is not the same with one writer as with another. One tears it from his guts. The other pulls it out of his overcoat pocket
Charles Péguy

Heat and animosity, contest and conflict, may sharpen the wits, although they rarely do;they never strengthen the understanding, clear the perspicacity, guide the judgment, or improve the heart
Walter Savage Landor

So is that TTFN or TANSTAAFL?

Stomp appears to be no longer available.  Boo and even hoo.  :(

I will now go outside and eat worms.

Thanks, jancory.  Funny thing is, I just went there and couldn't find it.  My eyes must be painted on.

Well it may be useful for some things but after I ran one of my models through it, the damn thing refused to load into Poser. Good job I had a backup. I'll stick with the long load times.

You can run it through UVMapper and save out without normals. That can cut down on file size if nothing else. Poser writes new normals on import anyway.
