But for the most part it is S+B FBR with a few little tweaks, and then the artistic lens.
Unfortunately, I discarded the exact solution but I can probably get close again.
Will have to be tomorrow, though. Going out to dinner soon.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
Best I've seen in Poser. Out bloody standing.

WOW!... i studied this closely and the only hiccups i can spot are in the mesh itself, such as the sharp line around the nostril flesh whatever its called, and the lashes and the brows detract a bit...the shader and lighting are immaculate, this could be a front page candidate over at the Computer Graphics Society , IMHO.... Excelent work BB

Very interested - obviously with the materials and lighting, but also with how much the mesh shapes and textures are contributing (I notice he's not the standard M4).
Might sound an odd thing to say to some but we sometimes forget the importance of the mesh shapes and textures, but a great result like this really is a balance of all the elements in the scene, and you've covered them all so well.

@BB's result: yeah, great!! But I wonder whether there is enough displacement in the beard area, or is it still bump?

personally I see Mec4D's render on that page having more consistent colors and softer lighting (inner ear, lip color, less reddish skin glow).
The Reality render says: "The lighting is just two meshlight, one at the top and one in front, my curved light. ... and I applied also the Film Response curve to emulate the Agfacolor HDC 100 Plu film. " That might make a lot of differences, don't "blame' Reality or LuxRender too soon. I guess one can make a result like mec4D's and BB's using a decent skydome and Pose2Lux => LuxRender.
The good news as shown by BB is that we hardly need to depart from Poser itself to get good results out. That's encouraging, thanks for that.

I'm not an obsessive when it comes to the persuit of a perfectly accurate photo-realism in Poser, but it does interest me that it's possible to get 'this' close, even compared to other renderers. To me it helps create a reasonable basis for comparison. I'm guessing this in part is the reason why bb has produced his render.

When I compare the octane render with the poser one there are genuinely aspects of both that I prefer to the other. I love the clarity of colour and slightly dryer appearance of the skin in bb's, whereas the octane render has more even and realistic (to my eyes) tonal values. I guess that helps illustrate to me the relevance of the end-users handling of a particular renderer as well as it's capabilities.
I wonder how the comparison might differ if the mesh was something like V4 with a default morph (less realistic shapes in my mind). Would the differences make judging the 'realism' more difficult?

i think Lee Perry Smith created this model form a cyberscan, while its a very nice model there are still minor details that were not addressed , not meaning to detract at all from the work Smith does , i think the model isnt the issue here , for me it's that its this is a poser render, sure there are other renderers that can equal or surpass these results but look how far poser has come just in the past couple of years.. of course this wasnt done by the average user, but by a highly skilled Master... still it exemplifies that progress is being made, it excites me to imagine whats just around the corner, i think Poser has a bright future...and we all benefit from these advancements

The white is a bit problematic because I've noticed the top of bald guy's heads tend to be shiny and it kind of obscures it.

Please download and join the fun. If you read the thread for a bit-he has some additional downloads-including a hi-res displacement map-and some normal maps.He also posted a link to a 48 Mb ZTL file of his head scan
The nice thing is that the same model and textures can be seen in a broad selection of renderers-many on the "high end" side-including Arnold render for Maya, Vray, Mental Ray, etc-as well as Carrara and others. Mec4D's Octane render holds up farely well in this list.
And BB's latest version looks good indeed!

I do have Octane, so I am able to play around and check out is't newly added SSS.
Here's what I came up with, fiddling around with the settings and only used the default Daylight.
I let it render about 10 and a half minutes.

Me too-I'm done rendering Mr. Lee Perry Smith! It IS a useful model for comparing different rendering engines- as seen on the original thread-(the one he posted-not just Daz). What you will see is that PoserPro2012 and Octane and Lux-fare fairly well when compared to some renders that cost multiples of their prices.
It WOULD be fantastic if some scans were used to make some realistic figures rigged for our favorite non-high end applications
I went to his website. They used to sell shapely lasses that I could render-one was a likeness of Angelina Jolie-which vanished from their site-and showed up on Daz. They had a few that were rigged for Lightwave 3d *(which I have) that I was interested in buying-they are no longer available. There are a few models-that are for 3D Max-which I do not have-and which are NOT usable by other programs.
There are some obj based female scans of a woman-with hi res textures-I'm tempted!

It is not surprising that you can achieve great result with lots of time and expert ice. And it was not an especially realistic render BTW but an artistic one, Baggins used his "artistic lens" to tint a color on the head that was not in the original. But anyway I like the result from all these renders. But the discussion missed a main point.
With Octane you don't have to wait 20 min to see the result of a parameter tweak, you see it in real time. So every tom, dick and harry can get great result with this render that do the work of 10-15 computers in a render farm.
That is such things my mind muses of when I see the enormeous time and effort bagginsbill lay down in his renders.

to me that seems more like a sport, to get the most out of Poser's render engine (like jpf does, for example)
for realism there are faster - and easier - ways nowadays.
It is entertaining for me to make Poser do things - not much different than a sudoku puzzle.
