Subject: What is this file Poser File type

shante ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 11:14 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 3:59 AM

There is a community artist that offers what appear to be some beautiful morphs for V4.

I have tried repeatedly to download them but after the file is unzipped I get a file that looks like this:

LienV42_Morph.zip.cpgz

I have no idea what this is. I tried asking the artist and never get any response to my PMs neither here nor at ShareCG.

I love the figures he creates and only wish I could use them.

Anyone here know what to do with this file?

hborre ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 11:20 AM

Looks like a zip file with a cpgz extension.  Did you try deleting the .cpgz to convert it back to a regular zip?

Gareee ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 11:25 AM

Information on this file type was in my first search hit. here's a link.

Oh yeah. But it just puts you in a stupid loop by giving you another .zip file and round and round.

I just don't understand why people just can't keep things simple and cross platform user "STANDARD" so everyone can use their offerigs?

From what I have read this has something to do with some UNIX stuff. The Mac is supposed to be able to unarchive it but it doesn't.

Hey Gareee!

How you doing?

I found the links and a utility for the Mac called the Un-Archiver. I installed it and hark!

Damn thing crashes. So, I believe in my troubled heart it DOESN'T WORK!

STANDARDS....people! Please adhere to universal STANDARDS when offering anything.

I typed it like I just shouted....hope I didn't wake anyone in the building!?

Thanks for your help guys!

Now to dump EVERYRHING created by this guy and forget I MIGHT have loved his offerings.

I have this character from ShareCG and I believe she is in my runtime without any problems with installation.  But this is on a PC.  I should check the compressed files for file content.

lesbentley ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 12:33 PM

Do you have a URL for this 'LienV42_Morph.zip.cpgz' ?

I just downloaded LienV42_Morph.zip by Kimber at sharecg. It opens fine for me - just a standard .zip file (using WinRAR). Perhaps she's updated it since your comment, but I also had it in my archive database. That copy would have been added months ago. I'm using the standard InfoZip dll to handle zip files in that app so it would have been read without problems by that when added. I also checked the file in a hex editor - nothing unusual and I don't find the string 'cpgz' anywhere in the file. Sounds like perhaps some odd problem on your end.

I also just downloaded the file from sharecg, and again, its just a regular zip file, and extracted perfectly.

It took me 10 seconds for a google search for it,  downloaded also in about 10 seconds, and extracted in just a second or two.

So instead of bitching about someone providing you something FOR FREE, you could have resolved your issue yourself in less than 30 seconds.

Sorry if I seem short, but I have zero patience for people who will not bother to seek solutions themselves, but instead waste much more time instead posting, and bitching about it instead.

Looking at some of the google links, apparently this is a Mac problem. Did you try some of the other apps mentioned in the Apple support thread i.e. Springy and Untar?

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2459752?start=0&tstart=0

You may have to get it on a PC or last resort, try to get Kimber89's permission for someone to send you the individual files.

The standard zip-extractor on the Mac doesn't work with this file.

I downloaded the file and got a normal zip-file. Then I tried to extact it with the standard unarchiver in Mac and instead of unzipping the file it made a file with the cpgz ending.

Stuffit Expander extracts the downloaded zip-file fine.

if you are using Safari as your browser:

In Safari's preferences, first tab - general: do you have the box at the bottom checked? Mine says something like "Open safe files after downloading". I don't know the exact words in English as my Mac speaks Swedish. If you do, this may be the reason why you are getting a file with the ending cpgz.

I have tried resolving this for far longer than the supposed 30 seconds you solved it in. Maybe as some have surmised here it is because I am on a Mac. Yes it is a regular .zip file but when i run it through Stuffit Expander or the on-board Mac unarchiver I get the file I posted above. I even tried getting the app you sent me to get and got nothing but a crashed application and no file to work with. Somehow you make it sound that asking for help is an easy solution when in fact man it isn't, especially when I encounter well meaning folks giving suggestions that don't work for me.

Bottom line, I have been trying to Dl this and other figures by this artist since he made them available with the same negative result. They have ALL been the same problem. Nowhere else have I gotten this problem either.

I have asked around off-thread ot IM, to others on Mac sand PCs I know  the same question and they all had similar problems or no problems just like I have found here. None of their suggestions worked either.

That is why i came here. if I could resolve the damn problem myself I wouldn't be asking for help. Apparently I am the stupid one from what everyone is saying here and I should just fade away. But I thought these forums were set up for just this kind of assistance.

This may not apply but there have been many instances were content creators do not use standard archiving methods. There were vendors in the past especially who would just make their wares available in ONLY .exe files. There is still at least one whose work i love and would PURCHASE (so it isn't just an issue about FREE stuff friend) but he insists on using .exe installing methods and refuses to sell his products as regular .zip files so the rest of us can at least install them by hand. That to me is foolish from a vendors POV because they are cutting out a portion of the customer base that could purchase their products Namely fools like me on Macs who can't use their files. That is what i was mostly referring to.

If after all the suggestions, as was the case here to get that unarchiver you sent me to get, which is supposed to open these files, I still can't get the program to unarchive the files correctly what am I supposed to do but complain. you would too as would anyone else lacking any ability to fix the problem themselves.

I am no computer genius and I have my problems figuring things out but that is why in the end I have to swallow my pride and ask for help. Getting a gut-full of swallowed pride and nothing but frustrated vilifying responses sure is not pleasent either. And if none of the help works I don't think getting upset is too terribly wrong. And if was taking up so much of your time why on earth did you stop and help?

I have always respected you and your offerings and am the satisfied owner of many of your stuff from DAZ and have always appreciated your help when you have provided it.

Why did you take it so personally?

I tired Stuffitexpander. and got the same stupid result. on the off-chance I was missing something I rn both the original posted .zip file as well as the unarchivd file and got nowhere with either.

I even went to the site Garee sent me to Google Search to find, and downloaded TheUnarchiver3.0 which is supposed to be able to open all files including the one with the weird extension. I installed it and it repeatedly crashed when i tried using it.

I don't use Safari prefering the newest version of Firefox but though that offers the same option I turned it off so I can use my advanced version of StuffitExpander with all the darn bells and whistles I purchased when i got this computer.

So it's isn't as if i haven't tried all this stuff even before i posted here. I came here hoping to find a solution I may have missed.

Thanks anyway for your help.

One more attempt: On my computer Zipeg will open the cpgz file (www.zipeg.com). I don't have the newest version of Zipeg though.

Edited to add: Generally Zipeg works very well on my computer and can often open corrupted zip-files when other programs fail.

I don't use OS X, but I do use UNIX, and OS X is UNIX under the pretty desktop.  To deal with this in UNIX, create a folder someplace easy to find, drag the downloaded zip there, and open a terminal window in that folder:

  1. In the Finder, from the Go menu, choose Utilities.
  2. In the Utilities window, double-click Terminal.

Then enter this command (you should be able to copy and paste it in)...

unzip LienV42_Morph.zip

Hit Return, and it will extract extract the zip to the folder.

For more information on the unzip command than you'll likely ever need to know... 😄

EDIT it just ocurred to me; Phil Cooke has an unzip Python script that works within Poser...

I generally have pretty good luck with stuff or can eventually figure things out but occasionally, I get something that just won't work so I understand your frustration. I don't know Jack about Macs so I can't offer any help in that regard. From the APple threads, it sounds like this is something that is hit or miss and probably down to the specifics of the exact OS version, installed applications, patches etc. Those problems are extremely difficult to figure out. Without knowing what application the creator used, it's impossible to say if that is a factor. Obviously though the file works normally on multiple PCs, with multiple applications and on some Macs with some applications.

Rather than beating you head against the wall, I would again suggest that you either unzip it on another computer if you have access to one - preferably a Windows machine - or, contact the creator and ask her to send you the files unzipped - or give permission for someone here to send them to you. If there is no contact information listed at sharecg, I can send you the email listed in the readme.

OK  FINALLY!

That seemed to work though when I first tried it the unarchived folder got stacked on my desktop over the HardDrive icon and I thought it too didn't work. I came across it accidentally and realized I finally found the solution. Gotta redirect unarchved files back to my DL folder to keep that from happening.

Appreciate your help here.

Is there a Mac version of 7zip?  If so, I'd get it because that can open just about anything.

I had this same issue recently, can't remember what product it was with... or if it was paid or freebie.

I'm on a mac. The built in archive utitlity was just taking me into this same unending loop. Seems to be a bug...

I ended up solving the issue using the free version of Smith Micro's "Stuffit" program to unarchive the zip.

;-)

monkeycloud ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 4:38 PM · edited Fri, 30 March 2012 at 4:43 PM

"Stuffit Expander" it's called... gives you the option of where you want to place the extracted files and does folder merge... so can merge the contents into your runtime, it that's appropriate...

http://www.stuffit.com/mac-expander.html

shante ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 5:34 PM

When I got my MacBook I splurged and got th Stuffit Suite Pro and have been using it without a hitch. It didn't work for me. Goes to show depending on what system/OS version/Time of day/outdoor weather/or just plain luck.......well you know the rest.

Suffice it to say I finaly got it to work so I took all her stuff i have so carefully cherished albeit unuseable until a day like today when the Poser Magic comes to pass, out of the trash where it was angrily filed and opened it all.

Glorioskie!

monkeycloud ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 5:53 PM

Sorry... I'd somehow missed the posts in which you mentioned you'd already tried stuffit.

For info, the file that you had an issue with here, I get the same issue on my mac... that is a .cpgz file being created when I double-click on the downloaded zip.

I also, for this one, get a .cpgz loop happening when I do right-click and "open with" Stuffit expander. So apparently same as you got entirely.

However, strangely, when I open Stuffit Expander from Applications, then select File->Expand, browse to the zip file and then browse to my Poser Pro 2012 Content folder, the contents are correctly expanded into my main runtime.

Anyway, nice looking character morph ;-)

I think what may have been happenng is that the onboard archiving mac tool probably automatically takes over the unarchiving function when you double click it. I was dragging the file to my stuffit app and still had problems.

Good to see I wasn't the only Whining Dummy" here. I guess the difference is I complained and blamed....and you didn't. I guess you be smarter den me is!   LOL

monkeycloud ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 6:36 PM

He he... not sure that blindly stumbling over the solution when I got the same thing before qualifies me as being any smarter ;-)

I've no idea why it would work one way but not the other... its weird. I think maybe dragging a file over an app on mac is basically the same deal as doing right-click and "open with" though... it must be this part that has a bug.

shante ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2012 at 6:40 PM

Well I guess in the end all that is important is that it worked.

After the few years i have been trying to get Lien I can finally use her.

Downloaded just now and double-clicked. File opened no problem.

Using PowerMac G5 and Poser 7.5.

I sometimes have problems when the zip won't expand with the Mac utility; in those cases I open with Stuffit Expander.
