THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce sphere and scenefile download

Analog-X64 got me all playing around with booleaned spheres and I made this up. You can download the scenefile here;

www.kirkdunne.com/files/bryce_sphere_01b.zip

I made it in Bryce 7 Pro.

It's got quite a few things going on so your render times probably won't be that quick.
(IBL, three image textures, glass, anisotrophy, etc)

Have fun!

Strange that I cannot create a click-able link in the forum here. It KEEPS adding "http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro" in front of my url I paste into the Insert Link window. No matter what.

Ah well, no matter You'll just have to copy/paste that url. :o)

Here's what it looks with just a plain shader. (and the middle glass sphere removed)

Btw, it is all Bryce booleaned so you can tear it apart and play with it.

Also, the zip flie is around 15mb. Just fyi.

Now, my wallet has to go the grocery store with the little woman...;o)

well it rendered fairly fast for me...till it hit that glass...slowed to a crawl, then once thru zipped right to the finish, and at the settings that came with the scene file....As a colour blind dude I use image textures a lot as that is the only way my greens stay green and not brown, same with blue/purple, yellow/bright green...

Very cool. ;o)

Btw, I think I might have ramped up the AA rays in the render options. Perhpas taking those back down to 7 might make the last pass speed up. Maybe, lol.

Taking the glass out REALLY speeds it up, lol.

@ AS

This is a booleaned object as you stated...  I'm curious what you use to create some of those other shapes as in your "As alway...experiments" last year about this time.

p.s. enjoyed that article on American action movies

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 07 April 2012 at 10:36 PM · edited Sat, 07 April 2012 at 10:37 PM

Off the top of my head (without knowing exactly what images you are referring to) I would guess at Spheres and Tori, those are almost always my favorite objects to use when booleaning in Bryce. After that, would definetly be metaballs, they are a bit difficult/strange to work with but really fun.

If you can point or post to a render that you are thinking of, I'll upload that scenefile  also.

p.s. Lol, you saw that? Yeah, Hollywood has really forgotten what can make great "guy" action movies. Meaning action movies that are really just made for cool action. We are getting our butts handed to us by other countries now but that's a great thing, imo. It'll only help make us (hopefully) cool again. :o)

Oh, wait...darn it, I think I may remember what experiments you're talking about. Yeah, those used retail meshes I purchased from here at Renderosity. I'll see if they are still available....brb.

If it's the renders that I am now thinking about, they are meshes that came from this package that I had bought;

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/deskar---fantasy-shapes---megapack-1/61094

Some REALLY great abstract meshes going on in there.

Don't bother looking for them.  I thought you had generated them with some arcane app you had in your quiver.

I down loaded your file and I'm rendering now using a different glass and a copperish image based metal I made and turned down reflectivity on your metal.  I'll post when it finishes.  Then I'll ask a question about how to get a machines surface look.  A picture is worth a thousand words.  I'll post tomorrow.  It is after midnight here.  Bryce keeps me up too late.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sun, 08 April 2012 at 12:11 AM

One of the apps that is used more than most to create "math" meshes is TopMod.

Here is the render.  Again I turned down reflectivity on the outer surface sphere to give it a more cast look.  The booleaned cut outs I used a metal of my making.

The question:  It would be nice if the booleaned cuts had a machined out look that had some tell-tale mill marks on it, sort of like a drill or milling machine might leave.  How can I make a bump channel image to achieve that or use an existing proceedural??

Side note:  adding even the slightest fraction value to the displacement channel crashes my machine.  Memory problems?

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sun, 08 April 2012 at 12:56 AM

Sweeeeeeeeeet render!! Dirty oxidation looking ;o)

"Machined look" Yeah...I have tried unsuccesfully to make a DTE mat that looked anything like mill marks or even brushed metal. Just couldn't get anything worthy. That doesn't mean others haven't! (pretty sure David B has made some brushed metal shaders?)

I did make a fake brushed metal bump map that was an image texture. It was "okay" but still really only looked best when rendered when using "Blurry Reflections" which of course slows renders down to a crawl.

Displacement: Yeah, from what I remember, just about anything that is just a booleaned object will either just not show any Displacement at all or just crash Bryce. You could try Collapsing the Boolean and trying Displacement, and/or Collapsing it, exporting it, re-importing it and then trying Displacement. No guarantees though, lol.

There you go with all those pretty little objects I was talking about.  You must have two machines or a time warp device seeing how fast you render and reply.  I have some of those brushed metal mats.

I can't see any reason to pursue the machine mark surface if you, the wizard, have failed the attempt in the past.

Imagine a cast iron automotive cylinder head that has the flat surface milled where it meets the engine block and the machined out combustion chambers and shiney surfaces where the valves seat.  (I worked in an automotive shop one summer in high school)

Well I off to sunrise service at church.

Testing Link 1

Not sure why the url box at the bottom of the editor keeps adding that extra stuff..but I have figured out how to get the link to work Kirk.

Type in the editor the title of your item, highlight it, then click the little chain link beside the bulleted list icon, add your link to the url box...another window will pop up and inform you that it is an external link, and do you want to add the required http? Click yes, and it will be a perfect download link ;)

I'll report the oddity in the url box tho to the programmers :)

Thanks!

Yeah, that was the ritual I was going through. Might be me too, using Firefox 11, so ya never know. Firefox comes out with a new version number hourly...sigh

I also noticed (after re-editing my post a handful of times trying to make it work) that every other time I did it, I would hit the "Insert" button and then nothing would happen. Kept clicking it but no go.

Like I said, probably Firefox, lol.
