Fairy Tales Re-Imagined Forum Challenge

---------------------------------------------------------------

Since there are more people hanging around here at the moment, we thought it might be fun to create a challenge to help focus our collective creative energies and do something fun as a community.

Inspired by the recent products in the Renderosity store alluding to various fairy tales, we thought it would be fun to run a challenge which features your own intereptations of these tales.  We have all heard and watched fairy tales since we were children and have recently seen more and more reimaginings of them in books, in movies and on television.  But, since we all come from different backgrounds, cultures, families, etc, we can all bring our own unique experience to these tales.

So that is your challenge.  Take a classic fairy tale, put your own spin on it and depict it visually with an image created in DAZ Studio.  It can be dark, funny, modern, whatever you can think of!

You may write short prose, a poem or description to go with your scene to help flesh out your story if you desire, but most of what you are trying to illustrate should be depicted visually and not dependent on the writing that accompanies it.

You are also not limited to depicting one fairy tale in your image.  If you would like to combined characters from different stories, that is great!  Or, if you would rather focus on one story in particular, that's good, too.  Let your imagination run wild.

---------------------------------------------------------------

The Challenge:

Create an image depicting your spin on a classic fairy tale(s) using DAZ Studio.

Rules:

1.  All images must be made primarily in DAZ Studio (any version) and may be rendered in either DAZ Studio or Lux using the Reality plugin.

2.  Postwork is allowed including signatures, but it should still look like an image created in a 3D program.

3.  Content is only restricted by the Renderosity Terms of Service.  If it would not be acceptable in the galleries here, then it's not acceptable for this contest.  Anything that falls within the TOS is fair game though and we'll add content advisories if they are needed.

4.  Please upload your image to your Renderosity Gallery and then post a link here.  Please include in either your forum post or your gallery image which fairy tale(s) you are representing.  Size restrictions of normal gallery uploads are the only ones that apply.

5.  There is a maximum of 2 entries per person.

6.  Contest starts now and will run through midnight (Renderosity server time) on June 30th.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Any questions, please post them here.

Can't wait to see what you all come up with!

I don't see why there should be any restrictions on who can enter this one.  Have fun with it and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thanks, I'm glad you like the concept.  I hope others do as well :)

Not an entry, but an older pic I did with the idea of Beauty and the Beast, from the POV of someone who sees it as Stockholm Syndrome.

Hello Guys,

Here is my entry, I thought it was least I could do after the recent forum mayhem KimberlyC had to put up with.

This sounds like fun.  But, if it's not too much trouble, I'm totally drawing a blank on recent product alluding to fairy tales.  I'd love to check them out and see if I find any inspiration from them.  Can you point me in the right direction?  Even suggestions on what to search for.  I know "fairy tales" isn't going to get me there.

kittystavern ( ) posted Thu, 24 May 2012 at 11:43 PM

Very cool, kylumi, thank you :)

@sandman_max - I would recommend taking at look at Propschick's and RPublishing's stores in the Marketplace (both should be available from the Top Vendor dropdown).  There are a couple outfits and hairstyles there that are fairy tale inspired.  Bad Apples for V4 and Little Red Outfit spring to mind.  You could also do a search for "Alice" as there are a couple takes on Alice in Wonderland from various vendors.  Sveva also has some beautiful fairy tale inspired background sets.

Beyond that, you might want to take a look at images from the TV shows Once Upon A Time and Grimm or the movies Red Riding Hood (2011); Mirror, Mirror; and Snow White and the Huntsmen.

Hope that helps! :)

You may want to look at this;

Inspirational "fairytale artwork". Digitally created illustrations by some really great artists.

Very cool link, kylumi!  Thank you for sharing :)

Beautiful image, Rawn.  I love her expression.  Thank you!

I thought I had posted about odadune's image before, but I must not have :-/  I know it's not an entry, but it's a very neat idea and execution.  Thank you for sharing it!

Here's my entry.

This is Jack and the Beanstalk from the point of view of the giant, his wife and their (golden egg laying) goose. Title: The Giants and the Beanstalk.

"I tell you that vine keeps growing and now there's a little lad climbing it."
"Hmmph, the goose finds it interesting."

(Sorry, I didn't use any Rendo products. I don't have many. I buy most of my stuff at DAZ.)

Here's my first entry.  It's a take on the Pied Piper meeting a herd of monster rats.  Rendered in Lux Reality because it kept crashing DS4 Pro.

Snow White entry entitled: "But You Should Have The First Bite"

I got the idea from one of the duelling Snow White movies-if you've seen it, then you know which one.

ZamuelNow ( ) posted Wed, 20 June 2012 at 12:46 PM

Is this just stuff from the Brothers Grimm or would other various folktales and legends be allowed?

kittystavern ( ) posted Thu, 21 June 2012 at 4:28 PM · edited Thu, 21 June 2012 at 4:28 PM

@odadune - I saw this image in the gallery and was hoping it was an entry for this challenge!  Very cool.  Thank you for sharing.

@ZamuelNow - Good question and one I should have clarified when I posted the challenge description!  This is not limited to Brothers Grimm.  Tales can be from any region or background.  Please feel free to use fairytales/folktales from anywhere you like :-)

I did a steampunk version of John Henry: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2342595

Attached Link: Beauty Gets the Beast

Here's my 2nd image.  I was thinking about Beauty and the Beast and realized the story had probably originated in a time when women were considered chatel and really had no choice but to get along with the men in their lives. So what's the modern take on living with a beast?  Don't!

Great images everyone.  Thank you so much for participating!
