Subject: Brown Rat or Field Rat - Any Format

TomMusic ( ) posted Mon, 28 May 2012 at 1:54 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 9:50 AM

Has anyone run across a freebie Brown Rat (could also be a mouse)? I've searched a lot of popular sites and only came up with a white rat. I'm looking for a realistic model, nothing cute or cartoon related. Can be any format. Will be used in a Poser scene, hopefully with some animation. Thanks! -TOM-

daz3d .com has a monster rat that's close to a rabbid rat with a lil exaggeration if that would do you justice but it's not free.  sorry i haven't personally seen a free rat

Thanks for the reply "HalfDragon"... I am hopeful someone will read this post and maybe point me to a LINK. I have the white 3ds freebie rat as a backup. -TOM-

no prob but if you have that one you could look up some rat fur refference pics on one of the many texture sites and maybe turn your white rat into a brown rat using the texture map

Yes, that's certainly a good idea. What I'm hoping for is a really large detailed rat with a creepy tail. -TOM-

I would like even a white rat... where did you find the white one?

Here's the LINK to the White Rat. Unfortunately when you download the file you will get an Elephant instead. Someone has filed the rat incorrectly. It's a great pic and I really would like the rat but the download will be incorrect. -TOM-

DAZ also has a big rat collection with a lot of additional extra fantasy textures. Good set and quite realistic.

Thanks for the links Tom & Shante. Shante, that Noggin's rat at DAZ really looks nice, especially with the hooded fur texture from the pet store rats add-on (I LOVE hooded rats as pets, and the hooded Long Evans rat was my favorite strain to work with in my research - such a great temprament and SO intelligent), but it's a bit spendy for me. I'm really new at 3d art, but it seems to me that even their low-rez animals are awfully spendy.

Tom, I use DAZ Studio 4 because it was free and surprisingly easy for me to learn, so even if the rat/elephant download gets fixed, I don't think I can use it if it's a .3ds file. I suppose that's a drawback for using free software - there's a lot of free stuff online in .3ds format... But if you haven't seen them yet, the rats at DAZ that Shante suggested really look good if money's not an issue. The starter poses that come with the Noggin's Rat are really life-like. I think the designer spent a good deal of time studying their movement for those poses.

DAZ always has sales. Wait for one to come along and see what comes up.

If you do a lot of work with rats or elephants or cows investing in quality props and figures is really important.

Here are to links of an image I did with the rats to see how they work. Same image both sites so you can chooses the site you want to enter. Both sites are free admission to the galleries but you will have to register due to the nudity of the subject.

Enjoyed your rendering Shante. I like the rats a lot. They look mean and hungry. -Tom-

LOL

I was joking about that. Really doesn't matter I know many don't want to register there even for free juat to see pictures and even more hava negative thing about Renderotica or erotica in general. I just put it out there.

Peace and thanks for the comments there Tom.

Thanks for the tips Shante. I just filled out a registration for Renderotica to see your pic, waiting now for the confirmation email. (Seems to take a while -- ~20 minutes so far.)

Like I said, I'm a complete newbie at this, and I don't know what it will turn into for me (hobby, obsession, source of income, who knows). For now I'm having a lotta fun doing quick animations as e-cards for friends & family. Not ready to spend a lot of money just yet... I'll keep a lookout at the DAZ site in case the Noggins rat goes on sale. Their sale items seem to be good deals usually - closer to what I'm willing to spend.

I just love rats, and I thought I might have fun with a 3D model. People are so easily creeped out by them (which I'm guessing you used in your renderings), and they know nothing about them! I just caught one a couple weeks ago in my apartment, and against my better judgement I tried keeping him as a pet for a few days. He was miserable and wouldn't eat, so I released him by the river.

You really don't wnt to keep wild rats as pets. Don't know what they carry and they are already socialized with their own kind so that it will be miserable in captivity.

I do illustration and the Poser work is a way to expedite what I used to do with camera, pen and ink, watercolor and airbrush. Got a few pieces published that i created in Poser the last being last December in the new book:  The Future of Erotic Fantasy Art.

I remember getting a really realistic MOUSE here in FreeStuff a long time ago...

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/details.php?item_id=62185

yes, still there and really good quality! :)

Otherwise Noggin's rat at DAZ is super but not free of course.

Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!
