Subject: V4 won't install into Poser

MtnMist ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 1:25 PM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 12:46 AM

I'm sick, cranky and patience is quickly ebbing.  Computer is acting like it may be in its swan dive, so after loading Pro2012 onto hubby's laptop (outside of Programs) I tried to install V4 (even redownloaded just in case) and get error message about x86.  Well, Poser isn't inside x86 but V4 doesn't offer a way to install it elsewhere.  I thought DAZ was going to make everything zip files and simplify life?  Anyway, does anyone have a workaround for this dilemma?  Win7 64 bit.  Public or private message is fine and big thanks in advance (I just want to get back into bed).  :(    p.s...searched DAZ Knowledge Base and clicking answer links sent me straight back to the DAZ entry page.

Select DAZ Studio as the target app instead of Poser.  Those installers are old and look for "poser.exe", but PoserPro uses the name "poserpro.exe", and the problem that required V4 to be installed into the internal runtime was fixed in P7sr3 anyway.

DAZ 3D is switching to zips but don't have everything converted yet.

Tried that and got the same message.  It used to give you the option of where to install but that made it too easy I guess.  This is beyond frustrating.  :(

mishamcm ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 1:42 PM

What is the exact error message?

MtnMist ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 1:47 PM

thank you.

The exact message: (asterisks mine)

**There has been an error.

Error reading INI file C:Program Files (x86)CommonFilesDazdzInstall.ini

the application will exit now.**

mishamcm ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 1:57 PM

Oh, okay, the dzInstall.ini error.  That's discussed here:  http://forumarchive.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=77881

The solution:

If you can open a Command prompt, or create a .bat file, and enter this command:

xcopy "%CommonProgramFiles%DAZDzInstall.ini" "%ProgramFiles%Common FilesDAZ"

MtnMist ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 2:00 PM

Okay, I'm willing to try that.  Where do I open the command prompt or create a .bat file?  Will this also need to be done for M4 or will this fix the glitch for all DAZ installs?

mishamcm ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 2:04 PM

You should only need to do it once.  If you're using Windows 7, just open the start menu and type in

cmd

and then type that line and hit enter.

MtnMist ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 2:11 PM

ooooooooookay, I just did that and it said "file not found - DzInstall.ini   I'm guessing that's not what it's supposed to say?

CyberDream ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 2:25 PM

search for and delete all instances of dzinstall.ini, it will write a new proper one

MtnMist ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 2:31 PM

ok, thank you.  where would I find these instances of dzinstall.ini?  I haven't installed any content at all into poser yet and I don't have Daz Studio on this computer.

AmbientShade ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 2:33 PM

where ever you have your content directory, create an empty text file in notepad or wordpad and name it Poser.exe then make the installer point to that directory.

For example: Libraries > Documents > Poser Pro 2012 Content > Poser.exe

The installer should work fine then.

Unfortunately, that's part of the problem.  The installer does not allow you to point it to another directory.  As soon as you select either DAZ, Poser (all files) or Poser7 it aborts the installation.  Instantly.  There's no option of in which directory to install it.

1 PP 2012 has a content directory

2 that is where all the stuff is supposed to be installed

Make a PP2012 content Folder

then create a Poser.exe file in the PP 2012 folder by making an empty txt document and rename poser.exe

now try installing there

Correction Find the Content folder

So is that TTFN or TANSTAAFL?

AmbientShade ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 3:25 PM

if you create the poser.exe text file in your content directory then it should recognize that directory as being correct. You're just "tricking it" into finding the right directory. The installer is looking for a poser.exe file, but it doesn't exist for poser pro, so you have to make a fake one for the installer to find.

I think the problem has been located.  I've gone in through Windows Explorer and checked - there is no Content folder.  Wasn't aware that was possible.

AmbientShade ( ) posted Fri, 01 June 2012 at 3:36 PM

Ok, so when you installed pp2012, you dindn't install the native content. So once you get your content installed, creating the poser.exe file in your content directory should work for you.

Apparently the recommended method for P9/PP2012 is to install the content in your My Documents directory, so you might want to do that while you're at it.

The problem is the missing dzinstall.ini file - you need to create one before some isntallers will run. You hae two options - run an installer that creates the file if it's missing (Emotiguy works) or use a text editor to create a new, empty, file called dzinstall.ini in C:Program Files (x86)CommonFilesDaz

Thank you for that tidbit, Richard;  I have used the dummy Poser.exe trick since the first Poser Pro, but I was unaware of the dzinstall.ini trick.  (I have Emotiguy.)
