Subject: Does Auto Group Editor not work in windows 7?

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 4:41 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 7:41 AM

Can anyone tell me if AGE works in windows 7?   I launch the installer and nothing happens. In the task manager it shoes system 32 installer as a running process but no install UI comes up.  When I go to shut down I have to force the process to stop.  I have tried running compatability mode for windows xp and as an administrater

3anson ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 4:51 PM

works fine for me, running W7 Home Premium 64bit)

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 4:56 PM

Do you remember having to do anything funky to make it install?

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 4:57 PM

Is there any alternative utilities?  I may have to get a refund :(  I dont know what else to try to make it work

3anson ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:01 PM

only thing i can think of is that i run the workrig with UAC fully disabled( does not connect to the net)

3anson ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:03 PM · edited Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:04 PM

ah!  i seem to remember i had to get a .dll from the net. ( MSVCRT.DLL)

no similar utilities, afaik.

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:17 PM

ok thanks.. running without UAC didn't make a difference

any idea what I do with that .dll?

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:39 PM

I'm not getting any error message asking for a missing .dll

also do you know if there is an origional souce for it?  I dont quite trust google to pull up  only safe files

LaurieA ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:46 PM · edited Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:47 PM

You tried the two things I know to do ...lol. I wonder if it needs all the Visual Basic runtimes, etc etc? If so you can get those at Microsoft. Normally it'll tell you when trying to install that those are missing and it needs them.

I wish I knew how to help ya.

Laurie

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:47 PM

thanks.. tried both those things...

its just weird to me that it doesn't do anything, not evne an error message.  I get the little circly busy icon over my mouse for about 5 seconds then nothing, though the system32 process remains active in the task manager

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:48 PM

visual basic runtimes eh..I guess it cant hurt... I'll go downloading and report back

Are you able to suspend your antivirus until you install? I know avast will let you do that.

LaurieA ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:51 PM · edited Tue, 05 June 2012 at 5:52 PM

It's possible the AV doesn't like it...lol. I'm grasping at straws now ;). OH, and I would think you would need the 2008 VB runtimes rather than the 2010. Auto Group Editor is an older program, correct?

Laurie

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 6:00 PM

I'm using AVG .. its pretty boastful and likes to tell you whenever it does anything.  I can disconnect from the internet and try the install with it turned off.  I downloaded the visual basic 5 and 6 files, 3 and 4 referenced windows 98 in their discriptions so i figured they were too old

LaurieA ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 6:36 PM

Lemme know if it works or not. I have my fingers crossed ;).

Laurie

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 6:51 PM

no luck with the AV turned off

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 7:00 PM

Does anyone know if the vendor still responds to support enquiries.  Its an older program and some of the links on the site no longer function.  I wonder If i should just scrap it and get my money back

Janl ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 7:53 PM

Where do you have it installed? I did not install to the programs directory. I put it on a second drive instead and I've had no problems with it. I'm just clutching at straws too.

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 9:32 PM

thats just it.. the installer wont launch. I dont have it installed at all :.(  there is a process running for the installer, but it doesn't come up with the install sheild or interface at all

Janl ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 9:39 PM · edited Tue, 05 June 2012 at 9:40 PM

Ah, okay, I misunderstood. Have you tried downloading it again? Maybe the download was corrupt. I think it is probably a good idea to clear your cache first.

I hope you get it working because it really does do the job very well.

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 9:42 PM

thats what I hear, and I have been reluctant to buy it for quite a while now..  It will be too bad if I have to return it :(

shvrdavid ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 10:18 PM

The installer is probably looking for a file that is not on your system, or is not registered to do administrative tasks.

To find out what the problem might be, do the following.

Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer.

Wait for the Event Viewer to fully load, this can take a while depending on the log sizes.

In the left hand side of the Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, and then select Application.

To the right on the top is a centered window that will list all of the errors that applications and installers triggered logging events. If you are lucky, there will be a listing in there that is the installer that you ran, and what it could not find that caused it to hang.

If it is not there, you will have to experiment to figure out what file is missing that it is looking for. Many older installers used Visual Basic runtime dll files, which are not in a base install of Windows 7. And sometimes not even installed when you do a 64 bit runtime install.

There are a few 32 bit versions of it, but 5 or 6 is usually what you need for older installers.

Version 6 support installer is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290887

Version 5 is here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180071

Hope this helps.

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 10:25 PM

thanks... that is good info.  I did add those two runtime dlls but to no avail.  An earlier post suggested a different .dll which I tried to add but I have a copy in the folder already and windows will not let me overwrite anything in the system32 folder.

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 11:22 PM

nuts.. nothing in the logs from running the installer

meatSim ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2012 at 11:36 PM · edited Tue, 05 June 2012 at 11:41 PM

I got something from the event viewer on the installer

MSVCRT.DLL is a Visual C dll, not Visual Basic. I have various versions scattered about, msvcrt20.dll, msvcrt40.dll, msvcrt.dll... A VB dll would be ex. msvbvm60.dll

Without knowing which version it wants - or even if that's the right dll, it's hard to say. You can try downloading Dependency Walker http://www.dependencywalker.com/

it's a tiny, no install utility. Open the installer with it and you should be able to see which dll it's calling. There will be a LOT of stuff there but hopefully you will be able to see if one of the runtimes is missing. If you're missing  something, you can download it from Microsoft and install it. If somehow you get only the dll file, try putting it in the folder with the installer - that may work. Having said all of that, usually if a dll like that is missing, you should get an error message, but no guarantee.

Don't worry too much about any 'Delay Load' errors. Those are fairly typical. The runtime dlls AFAIK, wouldn't be delay loads.

Since 3anson has it working hopefully the issue can be resolved.

dependancy walker turned up the missing file

IESHIMS.DLL

apparently its part of the internet explorer install.  I'm searching for it now and am going to try copying it into the system32 folder and the syswow64 folder to see if that will work

LaurieA ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 12:34 AM

You don't need to copy it to syswow64 since it's a 32 bit program. It won't even look in syswow64.

Are we sure it wont look in syswow ....  It seems to be finding all my 64 .dlls and none of my 32s.  The only ones it found as to be 32 are the setup exe and the missing .dll that i just copied into both folders

LaurieA ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 12:42 AM

Well, it's a 32 bit program, so I would think it would use what it found in the system 32 folder, but why are all the 64's red? Are they errors? Maybe it is looking in the syswow64 folder but can't use what it finds there.

I dunno what's going on. Have you ever worked so hard to install a program before? LOL. Certainly no one can say you didn't try to make it work ;)

meatSim ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 12:51 AM

it just irks me because i've never heard of anyone not being able to use it!

that and I hate going through the hassle of a refund

meatSim ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 12:54 AM

actually from the tiny bit of reading i have done the system 32 folder is only for 64bit applications... syswow is a redirect for 32bit applications to run from.

meatSim ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 1:20 AM

I guess this is something to ask... is anyone running AGE on a 64 bit system?

meatSim ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 1:27 AM

never mind.. works fine on my barely fuctioning windows 7 64 laptop ...@$!K

meatSim ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 1:35 AM

ok so....  the main difference between the two is that my laptop is about 6-8 months behind on windows updates.....

It will also install an older game that my newer rig will not...

So how do i go about tracking down what one machine does that the other does not

meatSim ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 1:39 AM

dependancy walker gives me the exact same errors on the laptop where it worked as it did on the desktop where it didnt... so that is barking up the wrong tree

meatSim ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 2:02 AM

here is a thought... can I manually install it by copying the files and registry entries from my laptop to my desktop?  assuming I put everything in the same place on the directory tree?

meatSim ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 2:22 AM

well that was anticlimactic....  copied all files from the laptop to the desktop and it worked fine.  No need to copy registry values at all.

at least it works... yay!

Janl ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 5:57 AM

Yay! I'm pleased you got it working! 😄

lmckenzie ( ) posted Wed, 06 June 2012 at 6:24 AM

Allah, Moses etc. be praised! The shim thing is part of IE8 & probably a delay load at that so.... sorry for the goose chase on that. Looks like Windows Update may have installed a security update or something that killed that installer. Usually I turn autoupdate off and try to see if I really need an update before installing any of them. If the Iranians had followed suit, they wouldn't have gotten their lunch eaten by Flame :-)

Make a .rar/.zip of the files in case you need to run them again. Glad you got it.
