Subject: LWO and DAZ Studio

Hi again.  Is there such a thing as an easy way to get something done in .lwo to open in DAZS?  I've also got some .3do files I want to open.

The need to be in OBJ format. LW should be able to export those (though in 9.6, at least, for morph creation you need to use the OBJ for ZBrush option).

Thanks.  I didn't realize it till just a little earlier that I stated my case badly.  I have lwo files, and Hexagon, and was wondering how to move the lwo files into an OBJ for use in DAZS.  Thanks for your response.

Well, I think Hexagon will open .lwo and save as obj.

Sorry cedarwolf and richard it can't be done with Hex or Bryce. I just downloaded a very nice model from share cg in" lwo" format and tested it in both. But in saying that, back in the recesses of my old befuddled brain I'm sure that I used to load them into "Truespace" and export to "obj" from there, and, I have a feeling also that earlier Bryce (2,3,4,) used to handle "lwo".

Cheers

You can go into Carrrara with a .lwo file, however.  I can't remember off of the top of my head if you need Pro or not- but I would think that you would need to have the Pro version.   I did use a .lwo file in C6Pro for a render before and saved it as an .obj, but haven't tried in C8 yet.

If you don't have Carrara, try downloading Blender.  I do believe you can open a .lwo file in there to work and save as an .obj file.  And, it's free.  If at all else fails- see if you can get a hold of a trial version of LW (read the download page first), if you can import the scene in a trial version and save it as an .obj-  there's the end of the problem.  You can uninstall LW after the trial's over or after you've finished and not have had to spend a dime or a massive amount of time looking for another way.

I'm not sure if the trial version of LW allows exporting...

But, if you do end up using Lightwave, you have to make sure that the exported object has UV coordinates that DS can use.

Depending on the file version, the LWO may or may not have UV mapping and you might have to remap the object in LW.

You can definitely convert Lwo's in Blender you will need to activate the script in the User Preference/Addon section.

3do may be more difficult.

Heres a brief decription from wiki.blender.org regarding lwo format.

Introduction: ImportAllows you to import a LightWave object, both the newer LWO2 and original LWOB/LWLO formats. For layered objects, each layer is created as its own object.

Will import and apply UV, Morph, Color and Weight map data. Can also construct an Armature from an embedded Skelegon rig.

Maintains correct vertex order/count so that .mdd files can be exchanged between 3D programs.

Installation

This Script is in Blender 2.5 addons folder, it will need to be enabled in Blender's Add-Ons panel.

Instructions

With the script enabled, you can use it via the File>Import menu as LightWave Object (.lwo). Selecting that menu entry will open Blender's file browser where you can select a .lwo file and adjust the script's options. The script provides a few options for how to import the object, currently they are:

Load Hidden Layers: Object layers in an LWO2 file can be marked as hidden. In LW, a hidden layer shows up when modeling but not animating. If the model being imported is destined for further modeling, this option should be enabled. Default=Off

Create Armature: Will convert an LWO2 file's embedded Skelegon rig into a Blender Armature. This Armature object will have the same name as the object layer but with the prefix "ARM_" Default=On

Apply SubD Modifier: If any of the polygons in an object layer are set to be subpatched, then Blender's Subdivision Surface modifier will be applied to the imported object. Default=On

PoseRay is a free app that can convert both LWO and 3DS to OBJ.

I have a tutorial on converting 3D models.  You can find it near the top of the list here - http://www.mediafire.com/#8peynwb5zrs2a - Feel free to download any other of my freebies while you are there.
