Subject: Another New Question

lannie ( ) posted Mon, 03 September 2001 at 11:33 AM · edited Fri, 27 December 2024 at 1:24 PM

How come my model won't move in Poser. I brought it in and alone I can move it around (even though it comes in sideways) but if I bring in a person then it won't move only the person will. I made the model in max and saved it as a 3ds. But when I used UVmapper it changed to an obj. In Poser It seems to attach to the figure and then I can't move it only with the dials. I can't make it move forward or backward.. What am I doing wrong?? Help Lannie

this question needs some screen shots of the file, edit, and dials so we can see what you doing...

Jaager ( ) posted Mon, 03 September 2001 at 3:30 PM

If you parent a prop, it limits its movement options. If it is locked?

As simple as this may sound, did you make sure you'd chosen the prop before trying to move it? The selection mechanism in Poser is very picky, and you'd do well to always look at the bottom of the window to see which part of the piece you've really selected...

Ok. The image I have so far is Michael. I moved him up closer so I could see him better. Then I brought in the prop. When I do that, at the bottom of the screen it says Figure 1 headdress. So even when I have the Headdress highlighted if I try to move it it moves the figure also. I can't make them move separate. I haven't parented any of the objects. I want to move the Headdress forward to fit on the model. But can't do it.

atthisstage ( ) posted Mon, 03 September 2001 at 6:08 PM

Ah! Okay, here's what you have to do. The headdress is more or less automatically parented when you bring it in (like hair usually is), so the best way to solve that problem is to put Michael in what's called "zero" (default) position, then move the headdress by using the x,y, and z dials, not the tools at the top of the page.

lannie ( ) posted Mon, 03 September 2001 at 6:14 PM

I tryed to do that. I can move the headdress sideways and rotate it around, but it won't let me move it forward or backward. Can I stop it from automatically parenting it self? How would I go about making it a conforming headress?

atthisstage ( ) posted Mon, 03 September 2001 at 10:04 PM

You can't move it with the x or z dials?

Jaager ( ) posted Tue, 04 September 2001 at 12:13 AM

Lannie, are you sure that you are not really moving the camera? What tools are you using? At the bottom of the window bottom left Figure 1 means Mike, if Mike and the prop are all that there is, then this is your only choice - not the problem. middle of the bottom headdress means that this is the active group (I assume this is the group name in the prop geometry file.) If you just imported the prop, selected only "make normals consistent" then the X,Y,Z trans dials should allow you to put the prop anywhere. Conforming: if the prop just involves the head, there is nothing to be gained by doing this. If it has a train and you want Upneck to follow upneck, neck to follow neck, chest to follow chest, then this is when you would want it to be conforming. I can tell you how to do the geometry, but I can't think which CR2 you would use with it. I use ready made CR2's rather than mess with the phi stuff.

You can un-parent it if you want. Technically, you parent it to the Universe, that will cancel its old parent.

Thanks everyone. I am remaking the Headdress. Then I will try it again. I think I am doing everything right but who knows. So far I have done everything you suggested. You all have been a big help. Now I am off to create something that will work.

lannie ( ) posted Tue, 04 September 2001 at 4:54 PM

Jaager I am using the xyz controls. The others don't seem to move the Head dress at all. At the bottom of the window bottom left Mike and the prop are all that there is. That is my problem. I can't seem to separtate them. My dials will move the prop but not forward or backward.

Jaager ( ) posted Tue, 04 September 2001 at 7:33 PM

I am wondering if the geometry itself could have anything in it that is causing your problem. I think you can define an axis of rotation and maybe the center point, but this sounds like a Poser problem. What on Earth could be in the geometry that would limit movement in Poser? The point being, I wonder if remaking the prop will have any effect? I am guesing the problem is down stream from this. If you just import the prop, does it move OK? If it does, see if Mike is locked or something. Mike may be where the hangup is.
