That's a Shadow Min Bias problem, where the polygons are casting shadows on themselves. That's GND4, right? ISTR there's a tutorial included with the product which addresses that very issue.
You say you also changed the Shadow Map to 1024, so I assume you're using Depth Mapped shadows. Why? You'll get superior results with Ray Traced shadows.

I moved/changed ALL the lighting (angles, intesities, shadows), changed the size of the map (to 1024) and a ton of other things - and researched this on the web (seems to be many asking, few (none) answering). What would solve this? Thanks,
