OHHHH! That looks like ALOT of fun, Carin. SUPER idea. :)))

dochtersions ( ) posted Wed, 01 August 2012 at 12:16 PM

Thank you dear Carin!

I guess that clashing colors are the same as bright contrasting colors.

This I conclude because of the beautiful examples,
as the translation into Dutch does something strange.

:)

auntietk ( ) posted Wed, 01 August 2012 at 2:19 PM

@ Jacomina ... yes, it also means "Complimentary" colors, which is sort of backwards, but means the same as contrasting.  Things that are opposite on the color wheel.  Red and green, purple and yellow, blue and orange ... they're all wonderful combinations!

I'm looking forward to this.  It should be a great challenge!

It will sure be a wonderful challenge.

Ummmmm ... we're home for a couple days, and I left my camera in the motorhome at the campground!  LOL!  I'll see what I can do.  Patience, Grasshopper!  It's only the first of the month.  :P

Just to get the ball rolling, here's a picture I took about ten days ago.  I promise to look for more once I'm reunited with my camera!  :)

Wonderful challenge for this month Carin.

I think I can find a few things that contrast this month.

This is my first one from the Mission District Clarion Alley Murals.

This photo is only a few hours old...emphasis on a FEW...it was taken as I was walking home from work.  I don't know the name of this place, but it's lighting scheme is always a bit gaudy.  This is the first night I saw the fire.

Bill brought me a bowl of blueberries in one of our bright yellow bowls, and I couldn't resist the challenge ... this was taken with my iPhone on auto-flash!  Yikes!  Well, you use what you have.  :P

Within half an hour, I am out of the door, so no time for Photos right now, but maybe in the place I am going :)

Meisiekind ( ) posted Thu, 02 August 2012 at 11:36 AM

Tara - Love that hairdo and the blueberries in the yellow bowl are perfect! (Great for a phone shot!)

Chip - Love the contrasting light in this magnificent night shot.

Costa - wow! I saw it on your FB and thought it would be perfect for the challenge!

Great kick off folks!

I don't know if anyone's interested in this, but I thought I'd give a little background.

Tara, you may have used the common mis-spelling of "complimentary" quite unintentionally; but let me correct it here.

The actual word is "compl-E-mentary" (with an "e"), meaning "to complete". In color theory, those opposite colors "complete" each other. When combined, they produce either pure white or pure black. (Sometimes gray.) I won't get into reasons, but we naturally resonate with these opposites because they feel like opposites. And when put next to each other---as the wonderful photos above show---they create immense contrasts.

The Impressionists (Monet) put complementary colors next to each other to create luminosity. The Post Impressionists (van Gogh) put them together to create an almost sweltering look. "Clashing" is often used in place of "complementary". They create explosive contrasts.

I give a link below---van Gogh---to show reds against greens. It's an intense hangover of a scene, one of his most famous interiors. That's the power of clashing colors...

The photographs above are all marvelous! Just wanted to give a little background...

be well, all, mark

anahata.c ( ) posted Thu, 02 August 2012 at 6:48 PM

ps---when I said a "common misspelling" I meant that a lot of books and articles call it 'complimentary', not that you can't spell, Tara. Hope that was clear! (It's a common mistake). m

auntietk ( ) posted Thu, 02 August 2012 at 11:30 PM

Thanks for the correction!  I didn't take it personally ... not to worry!  :)  My self worth is not tied to my ability to spell.  The information is interesting, and makes SOoooo much more sense!

Tara - Your usual bold, beautiful portraits. The portrait (from a series many of your fans love) has beautiful saturated hues, with wonderfully clashing reds/greens, oranges/blues, etc. And real joy too...

The blueberries have deep blues and orange-yellows (in painting that would be a wonderful 'cadmium yellow'). Fine minimalism and off-center composition.

Costa - I've seen shots like these in your gallery, and they're visual dances. The artist(s) wanted to make their colors bounce off each other, and that's what they do in your shot. And it's great to see the lines in the wall, etc. Brings us back to what it really is...

Chip - another of your spirit-inside-the-building shots, with real complementary contrasts and a luminosity that only you get. I've lived in this city for years, and I still think you travel to ancient Mesopotamia to get your shots. The blues and oranges are lucious.

Ok, mine (below) aren't as dramatic: Just yellows/purples, and blues/oranges. Blended by nature...but the clash gives them a 'jump', I think. Hope you like 'm...

Thanks Mark for the very interesting info on colors!

Isn't nature just the very best. Love the complementary sky colors you have captured over your amazing Lake Michigan!

Thanks Folks!!!

@ Tara: That dazzling hairstyles, Tara, and super berries from Bil ;-)

@ Costa such a nice mix of colors

@ Chip that flame is so vivid in your photo.

@ Mark, beautiful skies, brilliant red.

@Carin, your colors pop from the screen, especially that parrot.

@Helle, what pepping up colors your flowers have.

I'm jealous of your sleepiness, dear friend.
Here only by taking pills against pain,
and unfortunately, only a few hours 'under sail',
then back to 'the fight must go on'.

But I don't complain.
Tonight
new changes,
right? ;-)

Also this week new changes to make splashing-colors-shots :D

See you soon, friends!

Hello everyone. This theme will be very difficult for me to deal with. My photographs are suffering from chronic monochromatic tone.

Tara you are great, I do not know where you found your models but they are perfectly in tune. The blueberry embody the challenge this month, I think.

Hello Costapanos, wonderful mural.

Chipka Hello, very good night capture.

Hello Anahata, your explanation in English for me is a little complicated in the coming days I will try to study it. About your shots: images clear and fascinating.

Hello Carin, your photos have a decisive cut and expressive. Very beautiful.

Hello Helle, your flowers are clean and elegant, as usual.

Hello Jacomina, very funny and incisive, great contrast.
