If you are using DS4 pro, I believe you have what you need to get any model rigged and working for DS. To actually make a model, you will need a modeling app of which there are many. Hexagon is sold at DAZ and is good for new modelers. You could also try carrara at DAZ. blender is free, just google it. Then you get to the high end, expensive professional apps like 3DSMax, Maya, Modo, or Cinema4D.
There are more options on this list although some on this list do not do modeling such as DS and Poser.

As for running slow, try updating your openGL drivers, adding more memory or updating your CPU.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of answers on this. To make props, cloths, etc. you need a modeling program. I use Hexagon for most of my modeling (free from DAZ), I'd say start there if you are using a Windows machine (seems to have issues on Mac's). Other free options include Wings 3D, and Blender, but any modeling program that can import/exprot .obj files will work. Silo is also fairly popular, it costs about $100. IMHO though, the free apps I mentioned can do what you need very well.
I would say that of the three free apps I mentioned, Hex and Wings are the easiest to learn.
Opps....two slow on the keyboard

If you want a simple and quick modeling tool I suggest getting the free Wings3D program. its the least complicated program out there that I know of
I vote for hex as there are so many video tutorials out there for it.
Geekatplay has lots of video tuts. If you have the download helper plug in for firefox, you can download them right to your hard drive to watch at your convenience.

Hex was a disaster on my XP,W7 and Intel Mac as far as stability went. If I clicked Undo more than twice that was a death sentence, but everyone's millage may vary. I'm on board with Blender these days. The interface after 2.5 was a huge improvement and it's absurdly powerful, jut don't expect results overnight with any 3D app, they do not work the way your mind expects them too and expect to spend a few hours watching videos before you model anything with more than 8 sides.

Modeling can be a very slow process, but if you enjoy it, it can also be a lot of fun. On the plus side, the more modeling you do, the faster and more efficient you get.

Thanks for the compliment! I'm not nearly as good as many of the other fine artists here (like FSMCDesigns), I'm still learning a lot with every render I make. Thanks for the offer to work together, unfortunately I haven't done much animation, and what I have done is pretty bad. I also have a very demanding job, and sometimes dissappear from 3d for 6 - 12 months, so I'd hate to have anyone depending on me for anything.
If your really interested in working on a group animation project, you might try starting a new thread here and/or over on the DAZ forums to see if you can get some interest in the project.
Good luck with the modeling!!
