Subject: "Face-lift" for Godzilla

As some of you may have heard or read, a new **Godzilla** film will debut either next year or 2014.  With that "buzz" in the air, I loaded Scott_A's free "Final Wars" Godzilla figure and started tinkering.

Here's a "portrait' view of the figure as it loads by default.

...And here's the result of my "puttering".

I concocted a displaced material using the Poser 5+ "turbulence" node node several years ago.  When I got Poser 7, I experimented with the "morph brush".  While it did get the face a bit more to my liking, something was still off for me.  Last night I loaded my altered .CR2 once again and toyed with a Poser "magnet".  I pulled a shape more to my liking, but the eyeswere "lost" within the head.  Scott_A "hid" the translation dials for the ocular organs.  Then I remembered a utility that "unhides" dials.  I ran the script; the dials appeared and I was able to position them to fit the altered sockets.

Okay, maybe this would be a simple task for many others, but I'm kinda' satisfied with my efforts.

Yeah, definitely more Godzilla-like 🆒. The original looks kind of like a Groeningzilla :blink:.

It's not perfect; the jaw looks like it's being "peeled" if opened past a certain point (so it's a challenge to stage an "atomic breath" pose), but I achieved what I had hoped, filling out the lower jaw and the brow region.

I like the body Scott_A modeled, but I've often "frankensteined" the head of his "Delgadosuarus" to get the more "saurian" look I like (as in the render above).  But it's a crude approach, the head and upper neck simply positioned with the neck and body of the GFW figure, the geometry overlapping.  The displaced material acts like a kind of virtual "spackle", patching the ugly seams.

Nice job!

Thats why I did the godzilla morph for Digital I's T-rex over at Daz. I wanted something more like the original's "skull head" look.

If you are into rerigging, add a jaw group betwen the neck and jaw... that will most likely fix that overlapping geometry issue you are seeing.

Sorry, don't know the first thing about rigging.

And just to clarify, the "overlapping" geometry issue is not in the my morphing and magnet efforts (the "after" of the "before" and "after" renders).    I'm referring to the "composite" figure depicted in the third image, the refinery assault.  Because Scott_A "cut" the body part groups very differently between his GFW figure and his Delgadosaurus, there's just no way one can align every edge polygon through positioning and scaling alone.  Think of it this way, the upper nech group of the GDW is basically "tucked" into the neck region of the "D-saurus" like a pant leg into a boot.

No, to make a proper, seamless, combined figure, enough polygons would need to be deleted in the neck regions of both figures to actually leave a gap between the two, and then new polygons created to bridge that gap.  Afterwards, there's all the steps to correct the grouping, assign UVs, correct joint parameters and fall-off zones, etc.  Of course, you know all that stuff as you are a content creator/vendor.

That stuff is FAR beyond my meager skills.  I'm doing good just getting the figures to stand aligned with the floor, not floating inches above it.  ;-)

Oh, yeah, Britain's answer to Godzilla.

I wonder if Soviet Russia ever made any "giant monster" movies?  What about China?  Korea produced "Yongary" (sp?) and there's that acid puking serpent (can't recall the name) from one of the Nordic nations.

I used to have a pretty nice Mothra poser fig, can't remember where I got it from though. I would like to track that down again, Any clues? coulda swore it was a Scott Ayers...

Oh yeah, in the read me for Scott Ayers' Gino figure it states "You might notice some mesh-breaking around the eyelids/eyesockets when displacement is enabled.  I was unable to resolve this issue."

I don't remember a Mothra from Scott, or anywhere else.  Ayers did work upon a Mecha-Godzilla, but he never released it as it exceeded his personal limit of file size.

Say, have you tried running a forum search on the word "Mothra".  I'm sure any links derived are long, long "dead", but it may at least give you a lead.  Use a range of "0 days to 5000 days" to cover the history of Renderosity.

...but it appears it's one of the models that slipped through the cracks and did not make it to EnglishBob's page.  Good news, though, in that very thread Ayers gives open permission to share his files.  So, if anyone has it archived, maybe they will be kind enough to share it.

Given those conditions, if you're serious about regaining that mesh, you might want to start a dedicated thread announcing your request.

I think I might have the model tucked away on an old disc somewhere, I'll look around...

Speaking of lost monster models, the free spider creature at vanishing point doesn't seem to be available anymore ... it was a really nice model available in the free stuff:Animals section. Luckily I still have it... The model is called BJ spider and was created by womol (aka PoseAtier). Below is a preview image of the spider...

With a little tweaking with morphs and textures it could be made into a pretty fair replica of the Godzilla minor character Kumonga (or Spigra)... Which is pictured below.

Years ago I wrote a story called "Big Elvis vs. Godzilla" in storyboard form for a Poser animation. Doing a search for it in my disk cataloger with "Godzilla" I found the guitar tab for the Blue Oyster Cult song Godzilla. Doing a search for Ayers I found "Slayer", as in the manga. Not the band. T.T  I know I have Mr. Ayer's Godzilla model along with a bunch of his dinosaur models somewhere. Nice work on the "retexturing" Redfern! ^ ^

...but the connection failed (at least for me).  But not just for that item.  I tried the item underneath and experienced the same condition.  But I'm trying from work, and while I'm able to get the listings pages, the firewall may be reacting to the actual download link (though I don't get the usual "blocked" message).

Hmm, in addition to the Mothra, it looks like he offered a Mecha-Godzilla as well.  (I'm guessing it was the older design from the 70s as it was the later design he feared made too large a zip file to easily download.)

Maybe someone will step forward with these zip files and share them.  I think EnglishBob still has available space at Morphography to host them.

Just curious...

Would anybody like to achieve the fetaures and surfaces I rendered earlier in this thread?  For "shiggles", I compressed the .CR2, the .PNG thumbnail and the associated .PMD file into a zip and saw it was less than 700 KB.

You would just install the original GFW files as directed in  Scott Ayers' "read-me" and the contents of my zip can be placed within any of the "character" folders.  The only caveat, you'll need to have the displacement box checked in the render properties to get the full effect.  Wait, actually two caveats, the second is that the material settings are based upon Poser's Material Room nodes.  I think DAZ users will get the benefit of the morphed skull, but D|S won't handle the "procedural" nodes I plugged together.  Sorry.

If there's any interest, I can upload the package to ShareCG.

After I return home tonight, start the laundry and eat supper, I'll "tweak" the files and upload them.  I have a node plugged into the ambient channel with the color set to a neon blue, but the value by default set to 0.000.  Raise that value to 5.000 and goji's "fins" will glow as though ready to spew his atomic breath.

I might even arrange an "OpenLips" morph so that one can apply a Mimic or a Talk Designer animated pose.  (I keep thinking of a bit from "Robot Chicken" depicting Godzilla giving the low down about the streets to his new partner.  He finishes by saying, "King Kong ain't got sh*t on me!" only to have the great ape in the background fling a glob of feces at Godzilla.  I later discovered that was an actual line from a real movie!)

A .GIF based animation demonstrating a fairly simple "OpenLips" morph that Mimic (and I assume Talk Designer) can use.

(The sequence probably plays smoother in FireFox compared to Internet Explorer.)

I will include this morph in the .CR2 I upload later.

I had hoped to get it uploaded last night, but come 9 PM, i kept getting distracted by "Face Off" and then "Hot Set" on SyFy.  I don't normally care for "reality" series, but at least these two dovetail into the original thrust of the network.

The zip file and the instructional read-me are ready.  I just want to complete some promo images.  I have a "before/after" based upon the first two renders in this thread.  I worked upon a "cinematic" render before coming to work this morning.  And I still want to compose a pair of renders demonstrating the "glow" of Goji's spinal fins.

However, Wednesday is the day my cousin normally arrives in town, so I'll need to focus my attention upon her until 8 PM at the earliest.

So I may get it uploaded later tonight, but don't be too angry if I'm delayed one one evening.

Rather than start a new thread, I'll just set a new vector for this one.

Attacged is an experiment I made with Valandar's Kaiju and the spinal fins add-on Gareee made for Digital I's T-Rex.  Instead of the normal textures, I plugged the "specular" map into the diffuse channel and used a turbulence node to add some displacement, thus creating something akin to Godzilla's distinctive charcoal colored hide.

Since one can't simply "conform" the Rex-Plus fins onto the Kaiju without them severely warping, I loaded the base .OBJ file into UV Mapper Pro and saved each body part group as a separate file.  I then imported each of the .OBJ files into Poser and "parented" them along the Kaiju's backbone and tail. I could have done the same thing using the spinal fins from one of Scott Ayers' Godzilla models and I may do so later.
