I was just reading about that the other day. RepRap or some company similar sells a DIY-jobber for $650. I was interested, aside from the obvious points, as I have a 20 foot roll of ABS in my tool shed and nothing to do with it...
Add: I thought it'd be super cool to make figures with too, or statuettes, etc.

there's actually a model out on the interwebs somewhere to print the lower receiver for a 9mm. That's the only part of the gun that you legally have to have a permit to own. With current legislation, there's no prohibition on or license to own a 3D printed gun. Allegedly (and i couldn't find the youtube test-firing of it) it's a pretty decent one-shot gun.

I was going to mention I'd read that article as well, and you wouldn't catch me with a 3D-printed anything for a firearm (outside of control surfaces) just for durability reasons, let alone the legality issue of creating your own receiver. Me thinks the BATFE would pay you a visit shortly after...
Anyway, there's a reason why Glock and their ilk uses metal-reinforcement and ABS injection for their frames (mainly that whole saddling recoil issue).
OT, but you ever see a super slo-mo of a Glock being fired? I sold my G20 afterwards, though slightly unrelated. My 10mm is all steel now

I finally got around to cranking out a few renders last night, and this is one of two that pleased me very much. The second, still cooking, is my favorite! Details on that ivy at dA.

Queen Boudicca (Boadicea)
For those who don't know their history:
Boudicca was queen of the Iceni people of Eastern England and led a major uprising against occupying Roman forces.
Boudicca was married to Prasutagus, ruler of the Iceni people of East Anglia. When the Romans conquered southern England in AD 43, they allowed Prasutagus to continue to rule. However, when Prasutagus died the Romans decided to rule the Iceni directly and confiscated the property of the leading tribesmen. They are also said to have stripped and flogged Boudicca and her two daughters raped by slaves.
And that concludes the history lesson for today.
I have been planning this scene for months, but couldn't find the right content to create the image I had in my mind. I know the buildings, clothing and props are at least 1000 years after AD 43 :)
It took two weeks to be created, and 36 hours to render. I hope you like it!

Holy gazoo! How did you get that many characters into one scene?? Layer or one-shot?
This is something I've been looking into, as I've had a render planned for two months that requires around 40 characters in one scene. I don't particularly want to layer 5 or 6 at a time though. Ten I wouldn't mind, but it seems that Studio chokes at any more than 4.
Any hints, ye olde master?

One-shot. It was a pain though as DS kept crashing, and due to memory this scene can't be opened in the 32bit version of DS. I don't think this would have been even possible if I used gen 4 characters, they are all Genesis. With the characters, props, clothing, the .duf scene file is only approx 10MB. If you are going to create a complicated scene, save often.
I would recommend doing multiple passes. Render the background buildings/static characters first. Then keeping exactly the same groundplane and camera movements, do the foreground characters. The more you break it up, the faster it renders. Then composite everything together.
Right now, I'm working on a kind of funny parody video. Here's what's rendering now:

I didn't know Genesis ran that lean. Damn the luck! But you're right on the money with the Gen 4 figure being a bloated mess. After about 4 or 5 Gen 4's, Daz has a fit and gives up. I tried threatening by calling it's union rep, but it gave me the direct number while waving a less desirable finger.

This is the way I've normally done it as well, but I'm getting more picky on how light falls with shadowing and such, and I've noticed that layering--even when done well--doesn't look 'true' as the characters (if they were in the shot) would block light for others around it but weren't in the scene for that pass, or eyeball reflections would be incorrect, things like that.
Picky, I know, but that's me! (The wife says I have closet OCD--Me, I say ehh, in some things; my desk is a real mess and I like it that way!) I may have to give genesis a go, or actually plan a Doc-style mega scene on paper first. grrg

Looks great! My only nit pick is the concrete in the forground. Way to shiny and clean for the scene. Needs more grunge................

Wow! Doc thats great.... The spoils off war. You need wood mud and thatching for the buildings in that time frame.. Great image anyway...

A few tips on getting loads of characters in a scene...
Textures, textures and textures. Reducing geometry will not have as big an effect as reducing unsuitable texture sizes.
You do not need 2000x2000 pixel images for diffuse, bunp and spec for eyes on a secondary character. Same for face, torso and limb textures.
You can collect textures and then reduce them manually using a graphics app, I recommend IrfanView for the PC. If possible, reuse textures but change diffuse values for variety in background characters.
It is possible to export characters and scenery separately from Daz Studio and combine them for Lux rendering. Makes editing materials much easier.

Getting them into Lux has never been a problem, its having them all on-screen at the same time, at least for me. I will certainly try, maybe even right now, how many incarnations of just bare genesis figures I can get before things slow to molasses speeds. It's the strangest thing though: just with Studio, I can have literally a whole world of props on screen, but figures kill response time (again, any more than 4 on my rig). And I never run out of RAM or even get close in these instances, its just Studio bogging down with what I presume is too high a vertice count according to the scene info tab. That's why I figured this deal was geometry or mesh related.

Doc, I think ya nailed it on the Genesis call. Granted, they are the only thing in the scene, but I've got 18 thus far, alternated between male and female, and studio only has a lag of between 1-2 seconds. Yea! Here's comes the zombie crowd via Texture Atlas!

I'm not talking about layering in post, I'm talking about combining Lux scenes.
Creating two seperate ds scenes, exporting them but editing the lxs file to load both lxo and lxm files.
For example, you could have the background and set as one scene, the foreground characters as another without collect textures and the background characters with the collect & resize textures selected.
Load all via 1 lxs file.

Maybe somewhere, but this block 'be dead :-p Powerlines and Ivy lines are one and the same!
Add: For whatever reason, the OBJ's import reversed, but it's still a very cool tool, once you get the hang of things. If you try it again, I'll put my the leaf alpha's I made on my dA stash page.

Quite alright, gotta switch flavors once in awhile! And she's such an 'easy' target, har har.
The Police portion is actually a riot shield grown into the ivy. Kinda gotta see it full size, but look close and you can see the outline and darker shade of the plexiglass and the handle on the back side ;-p I hadn't thought about the paint except adding rust to the tank. Drr, I mean, that's part of the mystique! Yeah, yeah...
