Subject: Errors loading .daz files

SardiDigital ( ) posted Wed, 24 October 2012 at 9:48 PM · edited Sun, 14 July 2024 at 11:57 AM

A couple of days ago I uninstalled  DazStudio 4.3 and cleaned the registry in order to do a clean install of version 4.5 Pro which uses the new extension .duf. The program works fine in my Windows 7 machine (x64), the only problem I'm having is when trying to load files with the .daz extension. I get a couple of error windows with the following messages, 'could not find file', 'an error occurred while reading the file' and the last error window points to the 'Content Director Manager'.

When I go to the Content Director Manager I can see the "Current Directories-->Daz Studio Formats with a path to Daz3D/Studio/My Library and the Poser Formats pointing to the same path: Daz3D/Studio/My Library". Don't know where the problem is, all I know is that version 4.3 worked fine in my Windows 7 machine. Hope there's a solution for this problem. Thanks in advance, Peter.

When you save a scene in DS 1 to 4.0 the .daz scene file is just the tip of the iceberg, everything in the scene is written out to the data folder in the first listed DS native directory. Without the .dso, .dsd & .dsv files from this directory your .daz file will just cough up errors any time you try to load it. If you still have your old content directories with the intact data folder then add them with the Content Directory Manager (options menu of the Content Library tab), but if their gone then your .daz files are useless now your using DS4.5, as those missing data folder files can no longer be re-created as 4.5 doesn't use those formats.

Thank you Bejaymac,  your explanation about the errors I'm getting is very clear. Indeed my .daz files are useless because I did not save the old content.  I'm new to DazStudio, been using it for the last 6 months so one lesson learned the hard way. Once again, thank you!!

To recreate the missing data files, start a new scene and load the items which were missing.  You don't need to pose or apply textures, but do inject morphs in the item needs them.  Just pile all the items where they load and save the scene.  That recreates the data files.  You can then delete the dummy scene.  Now your scene should load.

That won't work with 4.5, since it can't save to .daz. Reinstalling DS 4.0 and then saving the original content will work, for scenes saved from 4.0 at least.

that is the reason why I am allways at fear installing something new, getting lost of the content or be unable to use it.

I have installed daz4.5 64 bit pro without cleaning anything on my hd and thank god the software works and my old studio 3 content also.

it can`t save to .daz? well to what does it save under: file save as -> deprecated?

one thing. If you use the good old v4/m4 figures in ds4.5 and you have some community injection morphs for posing or shaping and want to save a pose you should save it under "file save as -> deprecated -> pose" because the values of the injection channels will also be saved, if you save the pose just under "file save as" the values of the injection channels will not be saved.
