Subject: texture dimention opinions please

What would you say whould be good dimentions for a hair texture? The image is going to be twice as tall as it is wide. I want to have a good size that is not too small that it won't be useful but also won't be so big as to be a memory wasting overkill.

textures should be done on a square template , 1024, 2048, 4096 pixels square etc,

as all proper modelling/uv apps have a square UV space. :).

medium res ok at 2048,  but if you want high res for closeup, the maps should be 4096 square.
