I wouldn't even think about not using IDL - it (and EZSkin) are the best things to come along since sliced bread. And combining bed and bread motif - for Dave-So:)
These are my quick preview settings. They're for the D3D script: if you're not using it, you should.
Windows 10 x64 Pro - Intel Xeon E5450 @ 3.00GHz (x2)
PoserPro 11 - Units: Metres
Adobe CC 2017
Quote - thanks ..I'm using Poser 8
I dont see anything about light emitter settings in there at all.
I think it was a new feature for Poser 9, but if you want to check it's in the properties panel for the figure / prop.

I thought it might be that you were using Poser 8. There was a quantum leap between 8 and 9 in regard to IDL speed. If you go to 9, you can also use EZSkin2, which will boost the reality of your renders a whole bunch of notches.
With Poser 8, you are dealing with older technology, and you are just not going to get the performance out of it that the advances of the last couple of years have given us.
Wish I could help.
It IS upgrade time.
it appears so :)
Amazon has it for $89 for physical shipment right now ..but dl is double that..strange...
i have a 64bit OS etc...Pro would be the way to go, but way over my head in price.

Just a thought. I love IDL, I really do, it looks beautiful, makes me all gooey inside to KNOW that with Poser, I can summon this stuff at the click of a few buttons (I've been into CG since about 1981, so I still get a kick out just what Poser can do), knowing, just knowing, that IDL-based pictures are better than non-IDL based pictures.
Then - I try and point out the differences to my wife, who is pretty Switched On. Her eyes glaze over when I point out the subtle, but still discernible (and to my mind, vital) differences between IDL and non-IDL Poser renders. She asks the not unreasonable question "so that one with the hair took 9 hours with IDL, but only 30 minutes without it - I don't see it makes that much difference, surely it's more about the composition, the original idea etc". I have to admit, she has a point. IDL renders are indeed beautiful and creamy and I love them. But are they worth it? Then I look at all the Poser renders I have ever sold, and ask myself, a) which of them have IDL and 2) which of the art/comissioning editors gave a flying fig whether or not I used IDL?
The answer, sadly, is none of them. It is my belief that no-one really REALLY notices IDL except our fellow Poserers when we tweak THIS to make THAT etc.
Just my opinion, backed up by a few facts based on my own Poser useage since 1996 or 97, I forget which. Other folks might have a different experience.
To answer the OP; IDL and hair - forget it, by and large, it's just not worth it, is my honest belief.

Perhaps, if you don't need the hair for reflection, you could make it invisable to raytracing.

well..i can render stuff without hair, like V4 ..portrait work..in maybe 10-15 minutes using IDL ...
put the hair on...just the IDL setup has been an hour and its about 3/4 complete...then the actual render has to take place...it hurts...and now i want to see the end result, but i really need to go to bed....
all the hair i use just slams my system to the ground.... its not super duper like some of you guys..but its AMD quad of some sort at 3.2ghz, with 8gig ram
