"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.
Silo has some really good UVmapping tools. Checkout some of the videos on Nevercenter's site. And there are some Tuts on YouTube for Uvmapping in Silo. Good luck and happy modeling :)

It kinda looks like the mapping was done all from one viewpoint (facing). So there is stretching.

I used Silo to make this.. then I used a checker map to apply to it and this is the result. My question is.. does this make any difference to texturing?
Is it because I 'excluded' to take the cube top down to make an inner floor?
My thought was that they should all be the same size.. or near as.
