Hi guys, I was trying to create a cookie mat (sugar since that's the easiest) and here is my first attempt.  Any thoughts?

Are you trying to do this with shaders only? Are you allowed to use a texture to help? Google images + Cookie Texture brings up some real nice textures to use as displacement or bump.

Click

btw, looks acceptable to me as a first attempt.

Looks a little plastic, but a good start!  Perhaps some grainy-ness, via a noise and displacement node?  Sprinkles?  Chips?

cedarwolf ( ) posted Thu, 13 December 2012 at 9:37 PM

It needs shiny crystals to represent the sugar peeking out of the dough.  Still, looks tasty.

Winterclaw ( ) posted Thu, 13 December 2012 at 9:47 PM

zanzo, it's mat-room only. Yeah I looked at images, but I don't know how to get that cracked look yet.  I've seen it done, I just can't figure it out yet.

outlaw,  there actually is a noise connected to the bump as well as other nodes to the displacement.

Cedarwold, yeah that'd be nice, but I need to get the base part of the cookie done.  Before I can even think of tackling sugar crystals.

Cookie-

Planar uv the obj. generate uv template. find cookie jpg. create texture. desaturate, tweak, create displacement. set up in mat room with math subtract node and image map node into displacement.

Sugar crystals- cube primitive, scale, duplicate, arrange, duplicate, arrange, export as wavefront object. import. some kind of glass or crystal shader tweaked to taste in mat room on crystals.

save mat.

export all as wavefront object.

reimport.

save as .pp2

sugar cookie.

or some variation on the above. I would do it all in an external modeling program, though.

primorge ( ) posted Thu, 13 December 2012 at 10:09 PM

...try some variation on the marble 3d texture node to create the cracks via displacement if you insist on doing it all procedurally...

primorge ( ) posted Thu, 13 December 2012 at 11:28 PM

maybe some turbulance?

anyway, took about a 20 minute break from the monotony of my current render set-up and made this. One sided geometry so it isn't properly occluding the ground plane. didn't relax the UV's so the margins are showing some distortion, Displacement map could use some adjusting along with the settings... but you get the idea. Primorge's Quicky Sugar Cookie!

BTW, try making the color on your cookie mat a little more vibrant.

I'm sure that at any moment Bagginsbill is going to pop in with the sugar cookie mat to end all sugar cookie mats!

Winterclaw ( ) posted Fri, 14 December 2012 at 6:29 AM

prim, that looks like you used a texture.  I also can't tell if yours has a displacement map or not.  I'm not saying it isn't there, it just looks flat to me on the surface.

I'll try to tweak the color of mine and use better lighting/bg when I get home tonight from work.

The texture looks very good. Only thing I would criticize is the colour. I think the cookie looks a bit pasty and under-baked. To my mind a slightly warmer colour would be an improvement. Then again, I'm imagining English biscuits, I have no idea what U.S. cookies look like.

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 14 December 2012 at 8:46 PM

Hence my mentioning the UV's (texture) and my need to adjust the Displacement... and my use of the word vibrant in terms of color.

Ah, nevermind 3D sugarcookies anyway! Once again taking an interest proves to be counterproductive.

Yeah, the color was bothering me too, but I think part of it was the lighting.  And now, two cookies even BagginsBill might be willing to have.

so I tried my hand at that Cookie texture again, I think the results are a little better this time...

I think we should team up, Winterclaw... We could make alivin' as the Danie and Marforno of Poser Cookies!

...mine still looks a little flat, though. easily fixed with a morph if I felt inclined.

...Maybe a more dramatic backdrop? I don't know, my cookie is starting to look more like a fossilized cowflop to me.

Ok... I'll stop.

Winterclaw, your latest image looks like a huge improvement.

winterclaw, the cookie looks good, if you figure out how to do the sugar crystals, I would love to know how you do it :)
