This is not a modeling problem - a one-sided square will do.

Make that texture and use it for a transmap on a square. Position it in front of the camera.

The material should be pure black - no diffuse, no specular.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

If you mean can you make it look as though you are seeing the seen thru a periscope?

That's probably easiest done in Photoshop.  Just take the image above, cut out the "clear" part leaving the round periscope, ranging markings, etc.  then apply it as a layer over any image you've rendered.

For added effect, add some haze around the edge of the periscope to shade the image as in your picture above.

If you really want to go all out, try a distortion to give it a slight fish eye lens effect using something like Filter Forge, Flaming Pear, etc.

Or you could just use the one I made below.  Happy Holidays

No. You need to use a transparency map to pake part of the prop transparent.

Use a transpareny map. A black and white or grey scale image pluged into the Transparency input of the Poser_Surface. Somthing like the image above.

The black parts will be transparent, and the white parts will bo opaque, shades of grey will be somewhere inbetween.

Plug the transparency map into the Transparency input of the Poser_Surface. Set the Transparency value to one. Set the Transparency_Falloff value to zero. For what is wanted here, set the Diffuse, Specular, and Ambient Color to absolute black. See image of the Advanced tab of the Material Room above.

I should also mention that I am making an animation of a convoy of ships looking through the periscope. Cheers

If its an animation then you'll need to use Les' method since it will be rendered as part of the animation.

To answer your question, I copied your image into Photoshop and then used color select to create a mask layer.  If you don't know how to do that, you can just use the one Les created and posted, it will work fine for what you need.

Do it in a paint program. Most such apps have a Line Tool for drawing lines. I Used Paint Shop Pro v5.

In Poser, in the Image_Map node, you need to set 'Filtering' to 'Crisp', otherwise the fine lines may be too blured to see.
