Subject: Model credits

Do artists(?) here no longer think it is polite to credit model creators?  While browsing galleries for artist of the month (Bryce) too few gave credit where credit was due, especially when the model was the centerpiece for the image.

Maybe I'm just getting too grumpy.

I agree with you. The people I most admire are the ones who share credit where credit is due. Manners and politeness are either dead, or on life-support.

I've also noticed over the years that many of the models used, their creators request that they be mentioned in the least and are not. It's one of the reasons I don't create and offer here anymore. It's in full bloom where many...and often well known artists, use other artist's models and do not even mention them as their source model. Personally I think it's disgraceful and should not be allowed. But it's been going on so long that I think no one cares anymore...so much for copyright integraty.

I would think that in the rush to publish their latest masterpiece many simply forget to give credit.

You are right and I agree completely. Unfortunatly I am one of those F@&K HEADS.  I have six computers running renders almost constantly, and produce about 50 to 100 original images a week. I post to about 17 different sights, publish to eight others, and cast and direct for an animated graphic novel series.  In other words I'm busy.  But that is no excuse for me to not credit all those amazing and fantastic artists that share with this community.  I am so embarrased and I feel bad not expressing my appreciation that I really do have for those artists and this community.  Thanks for reminding me that manners are important.  I will attempt to go back and update all my posts and correct this huge oversight.  I love this place(Renderosity) and I am always impressed with the amount of creativity that flows from here.  Please accept my appoligies.  And please keep sharing.

-Your (lost minded artist freind).

Cudos to **phive05 **for owning a the mistake of not giving credit where credit is due.  That is a class act to publicly offer correcting past sins.  Bravo!

Quest make a very good point about copyright issues.  If the model is offered and carries the stipulation to give credit to the originator and it is happening repeatidly with no consequence, then is the site violating its own TOS?  Would the mods not be aware of the "no credit" issue when nominating artist of the AOM voting?  Good point, Questy.

its odd you mention this because last year I made a Wacky races Car for someone and a little while later someone else made a scene in Bryce using that mean machine model and he didn't even write a word he didn't credit me at all. I think you Should always credit the person who makes the object for you otherwise whats the point you might as well not bother making it otherwise. You make a very good point and if someone else made the model they should credit them for it. Karl

IceScribe ( ) posted Mon, 11 March 2013 at 3:32 PM

In my latest Bryce render uploaded here, I deliberately left off artist credits because I purchased those models a long time ago, and elsewhere. Ordinarily, I would type in the credits, but I felt onery that day because they were several years old, although readily available and I didn't feel like looking up the readme. Nobody ever asks me "gosh, who made that model" in my renders.

If I were using models I bought here, I'd use the crediting form that Renderosity provides. Two of those artists have taken the time to look at my renders and comment. I am well aware that this kind of art is a collaborative effort of many artists. When I use freebies, I always make the acknowledgements of who the artist was and where I got it so others can have access. I do that with textures, and poses too.

But if a model was purchased, does artistic ettiquette require artist acknowledgment? And, for how long? Really, in my example, the Millenium Dog, and the caravan and M4 and his M3 old hair and clothes should have had plenty of artistic exposure and mention by now.

The real kick in the "you-know-what" is when artist's contributions are plagiarized in that they take credit for all the work.  I have had that happen to me three times(evident) now.

The first was a student asking for one of my renders to be rendered from another angle.  Turns out he turned it in as his collage assignment and got an A!  All they did was expel him.

Then another student (different state) turned in an airbrush painting I created for them and it was turned in as thier assignment.  Nothing came of it becuase I could not prove otherwise.  Ouch!  (I know, I can be so gullible)..

Then there was the time I revamped a school's hockey team logo and created a promotional poster.  The school took the logo and made it thier main AND I saw my promotional poster on a freeway sign advertizing thier football games..  NO CREDIT TO ME.

So forgetting to credit someone CAN be almost criminal..  But just ALMOST. Plagiarizm is the real crime.

Thanks for putting up with me.

Someone grabbed one of my spaceships and put in in their photo gallery thing - something to do with YAhoo I think.  I can't log in there to get him to remove it.

Chris, Have you ever read yahoo/google TOS?  Any images you post via them they consider their property to use or alter as they wish.  That is why I don't post photos to their accounts or associate accounts.  I do post some pics to Facebook but I always reduce them to no larger than 800 pixels.  Even lowering the resolution does not always work.  I posted a photo on FB and 4 days later I saw it on someone's desktop image.  grrrr.

At least rendo has plainly posted copyright notices and they offer the artist a choice to use an image freely or not.

Hi Bryster Report it to the admin of that forum say its your work and the person who uploaded it did not have your permission and then to prove its yours send the image with name on it. I hate it when Bums like that try to pass off someone else's work as their own its completely and utterly dispicable and should not be tolerated. There was a Fraud on here at one point he called himself the blind dislexic. I saw video and he explained that he had done this illegally (not in those words exact though but I reported him and I think Youtube was on to him and only his crappy videos remained. I would definately report it without a doubt there will be a contact form on there somewhere. Karl

I don't know if an artist can know everywhere their art has been snagged. Even non-professionals can have a render or image taken without permission or acknowledgment from a non-artist venue, and used in places where an artist doesn't usually go. That happened to me. A person asked to use one of my images for their blog. I gave permission and it was posted on the opening page with credit to me. Very gratifying. A month or so later, a different person from the forum send me a message about seeing that same picture used on a completely different forum host, without reference to me or the forum admin. It was not a forum host I was familiar with. Gave me the url. Sure enough, there was my pic, without credit to me or the place it was  snagged from.  I wrote to the new forum owner but they did not deign to reply and left the image in place. The funny thing is the basic topics of both the forums were about spirituality and "doing the right thing".

phive05 ( ) posted Tue, 12 March 2013 at 7:58 PM

I've noticed that when people are part of those "doing the right thing" groups they actually believe they never do anything wrong, sort of like brain-washing.  LOL.

NERD ALERT!  Is there some kind of image recognition software that could crawl the web and tag all the links that have your images?  You know, you put in your images and click "crawl"??  It's done with music.

That would be cool.

You can use the tineye website.  You upload your image and it crawls the web searching for a match.  www.tineye.com
