I was just reading that on the BBC website and it is a great shock.
I've bumped into him a few times; it's a terrible cliche to say that he's a thoroughly nice guy (but true). On those few occasions, I found him easy and engaging to talk to and much more generous than he needed to be with his time. Devastating news that he seems to have so little of it left.

Banks is, IMO, single handedly responsible for giving SF - and novels in general - a much needed kick up the backside. Not only that, he's a first class guy, too.If there was a list of "Least deserving of this crap", Iain would be one of the front runners.
