there is a recent picture in the gallery by wimvdb called in concert.  it was rendered in octane,b ut I am wondering how hard it would be to reproduce something like this in vue.  also is there any prebuilt content in any of the marketplaces of this sort of thing.

Sure, that is easy. Here is a super quick and dirty example. I used a spotlight inside a light housing that I made from two cylinders by boolean subtraction. For the spot light set volumetric lighting, crank up quality, set some softness for the shadows, that's it. You will need to up the quality settings for shadows and volumetric effects as well as anti-aliasing to reduce noise.

There are multiple other ways to achieve this effect, too. You can use a volumetric atmosphere to achieve the effect or use area lights instead of the spot. In any case, the volumetric effect and the soft shadows will increase render time if you want it smooth and noise free.

I am not aware of any pre-build sets for Vue (only seen them for Poser or DS)

Ciao

Here is another quickie where I enabled quadratic fall-off on the spot to get the "dimming with distance effect".

thanks.  looks like that will work.

Hi estherau,

As someone who did a bit of stage and disco lighting in the dim and distant past and has had fun messing around with them virtually in Vue its definitly possible.  Volumetrics will give a nice mister/fogger/smoky bar effect.  Gobos can be used if you want to emulate lighting effects created with filters / gobos and can also be used to model characteristics of different types of stage lighting.

I've never found a really good set of 3d models of stage lights, stands, A-Frame, PA equipment etc but I've not looked in awhile.  If they're not visible or largly disguised by the scene you can get away with some pretty simple models.

I think the main focus of the scene will be the people on the stage as in wim's picture so where the light is coming from is not so important.  What are gobos?

How would you approach a project like this?

Wim's picture uses the school theater by greenpotts which is here in the MP.

Gobos - sometimes called cookie cutters in the US - are basically pieces of metal put in front of a light's beam to cast an interesting pattern or shape.  They started out in theatre to do things like project a window onto a plain back cloth.  In disco, band and TV lighting they are often used to create interesting patterns.  Filters and gels are often used as well to colour and add texture to lights.  Adding some variety to a light can help model the objects it falls on and make them more interesting.

The way I'd approach this project, unless you really want to make the lights the focus, is to first get your stage.  Next place your performers and then work out how to light them.  I started to cover the basics of (theatrical) stage lighting on my blog and you can find examples of some standard ways of lighting a person at... http://www.impworks.co.uk/category/my-stuff/3d/lighting/

Cheers

Mark

thd777 what material did you use for the light housing or doesn't it matter?

I thought I might use the school stage theater by greenpots here in the MP since I have that one.

But I was wondering how I can get the spotlights to line up with the spotlight beams (which are just objects). I can add a spotlight to where a greenpots spoltlight is but trying to angle it and change it's width to match the original is really tricky.

Can I just somehow convert the beams into spotlights?

I think you can tell from this that i have never lit a stage before (or even been on one).  There's a point light I can turn down.

But my main problem is how to get the lights coming from the object spotlights in the 3d real spotlights, because positioning them is turning out to be hard.  If I select the light to position it then the cone (which shows where I want to place it) disappears out of my sight.  I'm not sure I"m explaining my problem well.

In this image I turned one of the cone objects into a quadrantic area light and made it volumetric and a bluish colour.  doesn't look right though where it contacts the ground.

The light disappeared when I put the quadrantic spot inside the light object (instead of using the premade cone) but then I put a cylinder inside the light, and used boolean difference to cut a hole for the light to shine through. I think this might work.

If you can't point the lights its probably the way to go.

One tip - green isn't usually used to light people of darker skin colours as the effect most performers find the effect unflattering.

interesting. I didn't know that.  Okay, not too many dark performers coming up.
