THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Exporting trees from Bryce to Poser

strongbear ( ) posted Fri, 19 April 2013 at 9:11 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 5:27 PM

I've been trying to export a Fig Tree from Bryce to Poser, but with limited success. Although I can export the object, the leaves simply come out looking as if it were made of paper (ie rectangular) instead of retaining its more distinctive fig leaf shape.

I've been able to export other trees, but with this particular one it doesn't seem to work very well.

Is there any special method to get the tree to look exactly as it does in Bryce and retain its leaf shape?

BTW, the reason I'm exporting from Bryce to Poser is that I have several models and light sets already set up in Poser, so it would probably be harder to export those models from Poser to Bryce than the other way round.

Alternatively, are there any decent fig tree models out there that I could use which aren't too expensive?

Thanks

I've had luck exporting as .obj and making sure I turn on all relative channels if using an image map for leaves, I also prefer bark as you can find specific types easily with google image search. When exporting trees I leave all the settings default for trunk and leaves. If you have a paint program I'd advise making a trans map for the leaf's alpha channel...black =transparent, white = opaque . Once exported go to the folder you saved to...I make one with the name of the tree to keep all textures together . Open the .obj with **PoseRay**....what's **PoseRay** you say...allow me:

It's a free opensource type app that writes the best .obj around and was for going between PovRay and Poser but I use it for preparing objects for Terragen2.See Link, dl and extract to a folder called PoseRay, open that and open poseRay.

open the model by going: Input>Load>3D Model and navigate to the folder as PoseRay opens to it's own home folder.

Go to Materials Tab and see if the textures are there, they show as thumbs of the tex.

If an image map leaf was used this is where you add the alpha/trans map you made  or had. That's it for the leaves, they seem to have correct mapping always.

Trunks always need U/V mapping so go to the U/V tab, go right to the bottom and in the Method field select Cubic and click Remap.

In the texrure dialogue rename the leaves and trunk from their material name they will have and then

Go to the Groups Tab

Click Tools> Materials->Groups, click Yes and then

in the Transform dialogue click  Drop to y = 0 and in the next column Origin then Transform and your tree should be set for Poser

If the mesh is really dense on the trunk you could click Weld vertices to be safe

get the pre beta...I found the BETA buggy but PoseRay 3.12.2 is stable.

Thanks for posting that.

I've tried using PoseRay just now, following the instructions you provided. However, when I loaded the tree obj into PoseRay, I saw that it still had the rectangular leaf shape to start with. So of course, when I've saved it and then imported it into Poser, again it has that rectangular leaf shape instead of the distinctive fig leaf shape.

I'm not sure what the problem is. When exporting from Bryce, I have the tree set on its highest resolution, but it still comes out low resolution looking like bits of paper stuck onto branches when opened in Poser. I don't know if it is that particular tree model as I don't seem to have that problem with other types of trees.

I've never tried exporting/importing the Bryce trees but if the material zones export with them, you should be able to apply a leaf texture in the Poser material room.

I can send you a leaf texture if you think that will work.

I would imagine you would need to set some sort of transpareny for the leaves. Not the leaf texture, there will be another greyscale image to import into poser.

Thanks, but it's not the texture that is the problem. It's the shape of the leaf of that fig tree. As I mentioned, it comes out rectangular - a pure rectangle. There are no leaves that shape.

It comes out rectangular because thats what it is - 1 polygon. If you add the transparency image it will render just fine.

Try the leaves in this zip file. (Image is so you can see what they look like.)

There is a leaf & a leaf transparency.   Put the leaf in the diffuse & the other one in transparency. Set the transparency value to 1 (I think) & falloff to 0.

Also change the specular & ambient to black if it's not set already..

Tho you probably already know more about the Poser stuff then I do..

Thanks. The tree texture and transparency map works! The leaves actually look like leaves now. There was a $25 fig tree I saw selling on another site, but I couldn't justify spending that much just for a tree, especially when I had one but the only problem was the leaves weren't working. At least I won't have to spend that money now!

I'm glad to see that it worked.

Have you tried any of the xfrog freebies? They have some nice trees, bushes etc.

Well I did in my mini tute indicate that the alpha/trans map likely needed creating and using for the shape to appear...some days it seems I'm typing at the wall...LOL

  1. Hang in there Bobby! We appreciate your hard work.

  2. Thumbs up on the X-frog plants.  I have a mess of them on CD or DVD somewhere around here.

  3. Awesome leaf Ravyns.
