Renders have slowed down a little in this thread recently, so I thought I'd jump in.  Feedback and suggestions for improvement are more than welcome.  Some minor postwork was performed.  I'd ultimately like to turn this into an old-looking photo, but that requires a whole other set of postwork skills I don't have yet.

"Evening Constitutional"

The Mechanical Man -- being a marvel of copper and brass -- had no need of the modesty afforded to more conventional men by a shirt and trousers.  But the very thought of going about town without his waistcoat and evening jacket would have been -- as any Gentleman knows -- quite absurd.

I call this "Colours & Cuffs". I tried removing the textures from the hair on each model and setting the diffuse and spec channels to the colour I wanted. Also set some transparency on the hair. The transparency and spec colours were in direct ratios to the actual diffuse channel.

Glossy was set at 6800.

Thoreandan, I agree with you, normally I copy the original poster's name then I preview my reply before posting it, mainly because it adds {quote} all over the place. It is also a pain the way it adds blank lines, note the wasted space above the pic.

While I'm here, I made this over the week-end (got bored again).

Hmm, remember seeing it and thought it was for poser 8 and 2010, will see if it was updated, thanks.

I second the recommendation of Library Manager 2 - and I can confirm that it works great with PP2012.  It makes the Library in Poser ALMOST usable...  LOL.

Funny you mention that after a long dry spell commission projects are taking off like crazy! I have a grand put aside when I have another 5 to 600 dollars set up I am also going to have a 32G desktop powerful monster built and will still keep my 8G notebook. Didin't folks mention that ATI cards work better with Lux please correct me if I am wrong... I need to know this as well for my future machine..

Go with the Intel 3930k they overclock very easily to 4.2+ ghz and are fastest 'desktop' processor you can get.

I have three of them, networked for LuxRendering.

Rfriese.. sounds like a nice build.. other than the geforce vid card.  Nvidia has horrid open-cl support.  I'd go with an ATI card.  Other than that, beautiful setups.  Any intel cpu that is of the sandybridge chipset is a monster.  Have you compared the performance of the i7-3930 over the i7-2600?  The 2600 is still outperforming newer, faster and bigger chips when it comes to 3D rendering

Won't work with the motherboard because it uses differant socket

Will look into an ATI/AMD video card

If you mean if that is compatible with the license then it is, as long as you don't run the two instances at the same time. If you need to run two copies at the same time then you need to purchase an additional license.

Hope this helps.

If I am understand you right I can have it on my notebook and new monster system but cant have it up on both machines at the same time? Will it be an issue if both machines are up but only running Reality on 1?

Pret-a-3D ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2013 at 6:15 PM

That is not correct Bob. You can have it installed on both machines. You cannot run it at the same time.

It's a matter of usage. If you are running two copies of Reality at the same time then you need one license for each simultanous use. Think of Reality as a physical book. If you give it to somebody else you cannot read it at the same time. If two people/machines need access to it at the same time then you need a license fo reach user.

Hope this helps.

Got it I dont see why I would need to run it on the notebook when I am home

& to run lux files from one to the other I just need to ensure I run the same version of lux on both and collect textures.. I will have the option of network rendering with my notebook..

bobvan ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2013 at 8:35 PM

Can someone please re post how to or a link to network render? I had done it a year ago but kind of forgotten how to !

Reggie68 ( ) posted Mon, 29 April 2013 at 12:08 PM

You need Lux installed on both machines.

Start Lux on the Master machine (where DS is installed) and let the scene start rendering.

Goto the 2nd machine (the slave) and assuming it is Win7, click on Start Luxrender Slave in the Luxrender program group.

This will open a window and in this window will be an IP address, take a note of it.

Goto your master PC and in the Network Tab and in the Server field, type in the IP address of the slave.

Press the + button and you should see session details appear in the list. If not, check the Lux log.

Once you are happy that network rendering is happening, I would change the Update Interval in the Network Tab to 1800 (30 minutes) as a minimum.

bobvan ( ) posted Mon, 29 April 2013 at 12:16 PM

Ok thanks I remember you told me last yeear and I gotten it to work I may be going with win 8 on the new machine (not sure yet) but the slave (notebook) would run 7

Got my system ordered but due to financial restraints I had to go with the AMD 8 core cpu,32gig of ram and an MSI R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX video card on the Asus Sabretooth motherboard

But the savings let me upgrade to two 27 inch monitors

Im lucky I sold a grand of commission in the past 2 weeks (got to still produce renders) the system cost double that with the additional coverage I had the option of going with  7 but will go with 8 just cause I will have the system for at least 2 to 3 years and M$ does allow roll back to 7 should I have any problems. I also downloaded the shell to make 8 more like 7 I get it at the end of nest week will also be using my I7 8G notebook and will use it for network rendering on big intense scenes. I am really curious to see how many characers I will be able to stuff in a scene with it...

Bob.. did you piece your box together yourself?  I built mine myself back in October.  Have the exact same heatsink.  With the exception of THAT beast.. I would have had the box together in about 15 minutes.  That heatsink took me an additional 10 or 15.  Would have loved to put a firepro or two in this box too.  The radeon hd 7750 i have is pretty decent for the price-point tho.  Sounds like you built a pretty boss box.

This seems pretty easy to accomplish with R3 Paolo.  Not that I don't love your plug-in; but, if I have it open for more than 10 minutes.. something is drastically wrong with my materials.  I know it's off-topic for THIS particular forum; but, I'm finally starting to get clothes to fit decently in poser again.  Just have to stay away from heavy duty morphing.  My main issue has been getting clothes to behave when I use any number of different breast morphs.  Like jawdropper, natural gravity or natural breast movement morphs.  The wife pointed out to me that if I was using those to simulate real-word conditions affecting the female anatomy.. that they'd probably not be wearing clothes anyway.

I'm not that skilled I am having it built. I'm going in stores & playing with win 8 so I will have SOME Idea of what I will be doing seems pretty simple. If all else fails I do have the run the start like win 7 shell exe file. You getting decently faster render times?

Paolo,

Can you tell us whether Reality 3 for Daz Studio will allow the user to a) change the accelerator used on a scene.??

I like to use QBVH which on average is about 15-20% faster than KDbacktree, and often uses less memory.

and b) will you be adding the feature of setting or assigning 'light importance' on lights in a scene.??? THAT would be a very handy feature to have, as again it would help in increasing render times / samples, when scenes have alot things like glowing control panels and monitors etc.

Cheers,

S.K.

Paolo,

Will Reality 3 have the ability to reverse which side of a plane I'm using?  Sometimes I've tried to convert an objet to light, only to realize that the plane is facing the wrong way.  The issue is that that object's designer may not have been aware of the Lux's requirements.

Also, I've had a terrible time with displacement maps, and in working on this render;

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2435754

It became appearent to me that the maps were 'inverse'.  Blood on the surface of the model seemed to go in.  I'd love to be able to either reverse a displacement map's direction or at least enter different possitive or negative values for the limits.

Please and thanks...
