Subject: Gamma Correction in Poser-torn between two worlds

Hi there;

As far back as i can remember since i am using Poser this issue has been a puzzle that i can yet not unravel.

Gamma correction seems to improve the overall look on character skin textures...but at the same time it washes out the rest of the elements in the render.

As can be seen on these two renders that i made. The one with GC off shows clear and crisp shaders on all the spheres...e.g. chrome, brass, and paint.  But at the setback is that the texture on the characters skin looks washed out and not properly toned.

Now on the other image with GC on is the other way around!...all the shaders on the spheres got washed out...but the skin texture on the character looks much better.

Thus leaving me torn between two worlds!...what to do in a case like this?...how to get the best of both worlds...but in one?...

A question for the seasoned poser veterans!

You put twice the same image up - see the title on the image (and they are the same when downloaded)

Ok, that is better

There are two things which you have to take care of when using GC

  • all bump maps, displacement maps, transparency maps and specular maps need to be set at gamma 1.0 UNLESS that same image map is used for the diffuse channel - in that case leave it as is

  • If you use an IBL map and you change the gamma of the map, light needs to be redone since the IBL map now produces different light. An HDR or EXR map should be 1.0, others 2.2. So it this changes in your case, tone down the lights

Hope this helps

That's going to be a great render when you've finished tweaking it!  😄

Is that the Car Patio set?

I resolved the GC (Gamma Correction) and EC (Exposure Correction) mysteries in http://www.book.artbeeweb.nl/?p=317 Enjoy.

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.

visit www.aRtBeeWeb.nl (works) or Missing Manuals (tutorials & reviews) - both need an update though

Not for me. Can you drop me an email with the offending url and how you got to it? If it really dioes end up at a place like that, we need to cancel the links and notify authorities.

The Sheedee render ends up in the porn site when you click to see the large image.

It just showed some bikini girls below the render when I viewed them, but I use NoScript...

Getting back to the OP, the light intensities are way too high for Gc and IDL.  Dropping the values down to approximately 80% should begin to bring the image to what is expected.  You could even bring those values down further.  Gc will brighten the render, making it unnecessary to use many lights and high intensities.  With IDL, most of your ambient light is coming from the skydome, again you do not need to create additional lights or use higher illumination.

Snarly's script is super terrific, but I also think content creators need to start adjusting their textures with gamma "On".

Sometimes it's hard to break old habits! 😉

Hi everyone!! 😄

bagginsbill ( ) posted Sun, 16 June 2013 at 8:46 AM

Guys the envsphere image (and the reflection of it) on the BB EnvSphere has shader gamma in it. If you use render gamma - whoops - you forgot to adjust the EnvSphere shader gamma to all 1.0

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Glad you pointed that out BB.  We have taken that fact for granted and I, myself, by routine change it automatically without a second thought.
