Don't wish to be an old "stick-in-the-mud"... but for somebodys sake... when will they learn that V6 wasn't released for Poser... bugger the DSON thingy... stands for "D"on't "S"orta "O"pe for "N"othing... is really where it's at... now if Rendo made the base models... wonder whether Poser or that other imatation software would be supported.

Disappointed... hoped for something special for the majority of the "V" people users, but nope... same old, same old... oh well... it's off my chest... moving onwards with V4... the sweety!

A second thought - with all the litigation over Microsoft engaging in abusive practices contrary to the Sherman Antitrust Act (preventing arrangements designed to advance the cost of goods to the consumer), Daz better take note.

Microsoft was ordered to share its appication programming interfaces with third-party companies, in this case that could be seen as making V6 fully Poser compatable with a Poser CR2. Marking DSON down from $24.95 to free, but still making it an obligatory purchase, doesn't really cut the mustard. Their objective is obviously designed to unfairly direct sales towards their own software (Daz Studio) and away from Poser. Anyone up to a prolonged and very costly court case?

Well DAZ has offered to share DSON with SM for free to integrate into their software, but SM chose not to use it. So your court case would get immediately thrown out.

Much simpler and less complicated to offer a V6 cr2 that is Poser compatable. Why not just do that?

I am still using V4 and have no interest in the Genesis charactors, nor do I have any interest in V6.

if Daz cannot make their characters poser compatable then I have no plans on purchasing them.

I think I am going to do the same just loaded Genesis 2 into PP2014 and it loaded but forget using Genesis clothing on G2 didn't want to play nice same with Genesis hair though in that case some would work while others didn't..

So staying with V4 and on the rare occasion Genesis 1..

From what I've been reading, many Genesis outfits and shoes do not work well with "Genesis 2" even in Daz Studio. Autofit between the two is apparently as much a hit or miss as it is between Genesis 1 and V4. Considering all the trouble and extra expense needed to make it work, not to mention the loss of functionality caused by the gender split, I'm sticking with the original Genesis and my old but reliable Gen 4 figures. Maybe from curiousity I'll download the free "Genesis 2" Essientials to check out the improved bending and expressions I keep hearing about but right now V6 is a great big "Meh".

Makes you wonder how many DAZ employees were forced out after the merger and management changeover.

Seems DAZ as company has learned nothing from it's own history.  DAZ broke away from Zygote when Zygote wanted to move way from Poser content creation.

History does tend to reap itself.

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2013 at 11:45 AM

A lot more info has been posted in the original thread.  (The new figure's name is Dawn, BTW.)

I don't think it's fair to say anyone was forced out.  Maybe they left on their own.  Entreprenurial types do tend to like to strike out on their own.  Chris Creek left Zygote to form DAZ.  It's not surprising he would eventually leave DAZ to form a new company.

It all sounds very exciting, especially for us Poser users.  DAZ is no longer committed to Poser users, and SM seems uninterested in creating and supported the kind of figures we want.  It's great to have people with this kind of track record fill that void.

Well, on the rare occasion I use human figures in Poser, I still have all my older figures, back to V1, Posette, Amy (Remember her?) and one or two others, not to mention the numerous free figures that've been released over the years.

And you know what?  Not one of them has gone mouldy yet.  Nor have their clothes gotten frayed, nor their textures faded.  Unlike me, they're still as fresh as the day they arrived.

Just sayin'.

I don't remember (or have) Amy, but having the ability to weight map older figures with 1 click really helps.  Adding subdivision to character parts also adds a lot.

I have been dusting off a lot of older characters.

Yes a lot of the old figures still work and live on. Their biggest drawback is the lack of textures and in some cases (like with Posette) better quality clothing.

But just because they're old doesn't mean they won't work. And Snowsultans (I think?) Vickibuster texture for Posette really makes her look good :D I'm looking forward to play with some of the old figures again in PP2014 and se what the new subdivision and of course all the better skin options can do for them :)

I've been playing with an addon for Wings that lets it create terrains from Height maps.  Still coming to grips with the making of the height maps, but getting there.

I live in the terminal morane area of the Wisconsinan glacier, and right on the south  edge of that,  THis is the terrain I'm shooting for, I have some definite ideas, and I don't have Vue.  The highest hill we have, I'm guessing here, maybe in the whole county would be about a hundred feet or so in probably a half mile from the low to the high.  Nothing steep or craggy, a few erosion gulleys, creeks and rivers, some small lakes, nothing more than a mile across in the county, most less than that.  One large city, which I escaped 35 years ago, more towns of around a thousand or two.  The buildings I've put up reflect what I see every day, until they finish tearing them down, then it will be just "ho-hum",  nothing of interest here.

I have (Crash) Bryce (Crash)  but never (crash)  could get it(Crash) to work (BSD)

In all honesty?

I use DS 4.6 exclusively now, but I don't use Genesis.

Why? Well, this is just my use case, but...

  • I have a metric ton of stuff for V4. I skipped DS 4 for a long time (until Rob W blessed the UI with the darkside mod, saving me the trouble), so I never really got into Genesis.

  • Thanks to DS' excellent scaling (and morphing/fitting of clothes to scaled figures), I can make V4 do whatever I want to nowadays. See the included image if you don't believe me. .. I decided to fart around with making midgets, and the V4 body filled the bill. :)

  • Thanks to kick-ass SubD in DS, I can recycle V4 and even way older stuff (like TY2) without worrying (too much) over mesh crinkling, bad bends, etc.

  • Thanks to weight-mapping in DS, well... you get the idea. I can use my current pile of crap from now until the Universe's heat death.

Now - all that said? If Vicky 6 (!?) doesn't work in Poser, whose fault is that? Go yell at Smith Micro and make them take DAZ up on their offer to help make it compatible. That, or make a figure that the world will pick up and run with, so that it gets support and longevity.

As for the "OMG Teh Monopolist!" BS? Really? Not gonna happen.

estherau ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2013 at 10:07 PM

I don't think that was exactly the story "Go yell at Smith Micro and make them take DAZ up on their offer to help make it compatible."

I think that the offer to help came with a very high price - like some sort of takeover of poser software required.  The price was too high for SM.

Every time I hear or read this, I begin to think the same people posting it are yelling at their car makers because they didn't get a Cummins engine in it.

Genesis and all of it's iterations and accessories, are a DAZ problem, not SM.  I'm not even going to  suggest SM should mess up the kernal of Poser so it can use that kludge.  Again, it's a DAZ problem, not SM.

And that figure may be on the horizon, called Dawn.  With the advancements made since V4 was released, it's not hard to see V4 fading into the background, and Genesis dying.

I'm only going off of the few facts that I happen to know. The truth is likely as ugly as the runny anus of a road-killed wombat.

Overall though, I've repeatedly yelled at Smith Micro to cough up a figure that was worth a damn, is morphable enough to not always look exactly the same, and (more importantly) stick with it through the different versions.

Long story short, my point is simple, albeit likely to cause a ruckus, but so be it: it ain't DAZ' responsibility to do Smith Micro's job for them.

Quote - by the way your scaled V4 looks really good.  I mean really really good.

Gratzi... got a shedload of work to do on it still, tho'. The cool part is, I just slapped some clothes on it real quick to avoid the advisory, and they fit with little-to-no effort. Clothing it took all of five minutes including the render time... in spite of a bajillion custom scaling tweaks on all the body parts.

Since when is it SM's job to follow DAZ?  When DAZ came up with the gray golum, they knew Poser couldn't use it, and they probably knew they would never, ever, come up with a bridge between the two programs.  Something that would partially work, yes, but full functionality with no problems, never.

It's not SM's fault that DAZ came up with something incompatible, it's DAZ fault.  It's not SM's place to fix the kludge, it's DAZ place, and they're not doing it.  Sorry, take that argument to somewhere else, preferably someplace where the average iQ is 2.

You misunderstood what I was getting at - I'll clarify:

It is SmithMicro's job to make and include a figure that is morphable enough that you can create a variety of differing shapes and looks, and one that should show off well the feature-set of Poser.

Poser 4 had Posette, a Zygote figure that did very well for the time. From Poser 5 onward however, SmithMicro has utterly failed to do what I mentioned up there. Their efforts have been singularly unmorphable globs of mesh that always look alike no matter what you try to do with it. Unless you're a veritable master of mesh, and spend a ton of time in Z-Brush or similar, the results are almost always too easy to pinpoint as being that figure.

The big selling-point of the Millennium series of meshes that DAZ made is that it only takes a relatively small amount of skill to make the figure into almost anything you want it to, and it takes very little work to make a face look like 'someone else' entirely.

I've lost count of the number of 'Vicky-killer' meshes that have come down the pike... it's been 14 years of them and counting. Seems everyone keeps missing the point, though.

If this 'Dawn' thing comes through, awesome. Not yet holding my breath though - world+dog had the same wishes for Antonia, Alyson, Renda, DinaV, Natalia, etc etc etc.

Only time and results will tell.

I think i may need to consider revising my opinion about sm making a figure, this has a chance of working. I hope, i hope.

You can tell a mesh that was modeled for SubD buy looking at the mesh.
The mesh will be 100% quads ,no tri's.
