Subject: HELP! Installing Tyler (GND) from Smith Micro

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Sun, 23 June 2013 at 5:49 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 1:59 PM

I just got a coupon from SM as a thank you for buying PP2014. So I decided to spend it and buy Tyler since he looked pretty good and I can always use another male in my Runtime.

But I can't get the blasted thing to install :(

It keeps telling me it can't find Poser on my system (with is stupid, Poser is even running right now)

I've pointed it to the PoserPro2014 folder. I've tried renaming (a copy of) PoserPro.exe to simply Poser.exe just in case that's what it wanted. But no dice. It tells me to "locate the Poser install"

Surely SOMEONE here must have had the same problem? And hopefully solved it? HOW?!

I should add that Poser is installed in "D:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser Pro 2014PoserPro.exe" - in other words, no weird UAD or anything. It's installed as "oldtime, retain compatibility" Poser.

Is it possible that for some reason it only installs to the C: drive? If so just create dummy folders with the Smith Micro.... path in C: with a copy of the PoserPro.exe in it and see if that's working.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Sun, 23 June 2013 at 6:54 PM

Hm. Worth a try. I've submitted a ticket to SM just in case. But I'll definitely try a dummy folder in C :)

Hm. Nope. Didn't work :( Darn Why can't they just put it in a regular zip.. as their auto detect installer apparently doesn't work :(

I hope they'll reply to the ticket on Monday

This may work

Create a text file and name it poser.exe and put it in your "D:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser Pro 2014" folder

The installer is looking for a file named poser.exe, not poserpro.exe

We had this issue with V4 and M4 installers

You should have a Poser Pro 2014 Content folder - separate from the Poser 2014 folder.

That is where Tyler (and all the other figures hang out.)

No, she did the classic install in the Poser Program folder.  Methinks, since I believe the installer needs to install the Face Room Heads in the main Poser Runtime, which is normally seperate from the content runtime, that it may ironically be incompatible with the so-called Compatibility Mode.

I have my Poser also installed on D:, yet I still keep the content runtime seperate and have had no issues with Tyler, nor any old stuff.; I just have to make sure any Python scripts are copied to the Program runtime if I want to access them from the Scripts menu...

Funnny thing is *I still use my Python Scripts from (mainly) the PP2012 runtime, located on my K: along with any other Poser install right back to Poser 4 L This is the first I've ever installed somewhere other than K: hmm.

I did try to put a copy of PoserPro.exe some other places. Renamed to Poser.exe. Because I did remember that issue with earlier installers.

And interesting about the Poser Pro 214 Content folder. I have a Poser Pro 2010 Content and a Poser Pro 2012 Content folder. But as far as I can see, no PoserPro2014 content folder. And Ryan, along with all the other native Poser guys are accessible through the default Poser Pro 2014 library. The two previous Poser Pro versions did create both a (mostly empty) regular Runtime along with the ...content folder. But apparently not this one.

I suppose I could install one of the previous versions of Poser Pro (they're "installed" insofar that I recently had to reinstall Windows, so although all the files are still there, there's no entry for it i the reg dat. Which MAY be why the installer can't find it.. I dunno.

What annoys me is that even when I point the installer to a folder with a poser.exe... nothing happens, other than the installer telling me there's no Poser there.

I've tried it both with Poser running and with Poser closed down. No difference.

The zip file containing the TylerInstall.exe unpacks fine, so it's not a corrupted download at least :)

And yes I did a classic install. The one "not recommended", but that's how I've installed previous versions as well (or.. perhaps not since I DO have the Content folders from the two previous versions...)

GAH! I just wanted to look at this new iteration of Ryan, since I actually liked Anastasia. sigh

I still wish SM could just zip up the thing as normal. With a Runtime Path. Atl east make it an option to download an "old fashioned" version of it.

I wonder how the Mac version is packed.. perhaps I should get that and have a look?

Blackheart kindly included Tyler in a Anastasia update, is in a zip file.

i did my PP12 classic install, am really glad now for Blackheart's kindness.  Tyler is yummy.

not sure how'd he make as Snape.

I have the mac version, and if you insist on installing it in the main Poser runtime instead of the content runtime, it won't work there either.

If you insist on not following the instructions, don't be surprised that it doesn't work.  The old ways of doing business in Poser are no longer workable, due to changes in how MS & Apple are dumbing down their operating systems.  SM has made changes to Poser to reflect those changes.  i.e. so you aren't dealing with the UAC in windows, or similar crap that was added to OSX.

The default content goes in the content library - Python scripts go in the main Poser runtime.

Once again - Install to your Poser 2014 Content library.  He will show up in libraries/People/Tyler

If you want to see what he looks like (and collect some free poses for Tyler and other SM figures)

Tyler is with the Anastasia zip from BH rmp store.  that's where i got Tyler from.

but, maybe it's changed, Tyler was complimentary then.

He posted the news in a thread.

if you bought Anastasia from rmp, check your item list history to see if the tyler.zip is with your Anastasia.

Odd, I have both Tyler and Miki 4, I have installed them to an external runtime with no problem at all.

Perhaps it's the OS you have. Mine works fine with Vista 32.

All the best.

There shouldn't be any reason for it to not work when installing to the main Poser runtime. Especially if that's where the figure is.

And the existence of the UAC in windows shouldn't prohibit that by itself, as it can be shut off. In addition, there's no reason why someone couldn't install Poser outside of the Program Files folder and have the default content install to the main runtime.

I got a reply back from SM. Saying that Tyler was for P9/PP2012 and that they had an update of him for P10/PP2014 in the works, possibly this week.

I can't for the life of me understand why it cab't just install, but.. well.. I'll be waiting eagerly for the new installer.

I could of course install PP2012 in the meantime and install Tyler through that, but...

I eould assume that. The one I bought is Tyler SR1, and since that, for some obscure reason, won't install into PP2014, I would expect the new one to be SR2.

I xtill think they should have made a note of it at the sales page. The fact that you can't install the thing in PP2014. I have NEVER had such a compatibility issue with Poser stuff before. And I still don't see how it can happen. Unless Ryan2 is altered in PP2014... and nothing suggests that.

I could be that they made the installer look for some reference in the Poser 9/Pro 2012 exe, like a version number, and Poser 10/Pro 2014 doesn't have that reference.

Perhaps. And just because I don't think it makes sense doesn't mean it isn't the case. I could understand if it was looking for an earlier version of Poser, but a newer one?

I am still rather surprized that Tyler won't install.  I just installed Tyler SR1 into an empty external folder without any challenges whatsoever.  I selected the second option on the install for selecting wherever I want.

modus0 ( ) posted Thu, 27 June 2013 at 9:42 AM

The installer I've got for Tyler (from here with Anastasia) doesn't start up like the Miki 4 installer. It straight away states that "Poser could not be found on this system" and gives me an option to either do a manual search, or quit.

Doing a manual search is pointless, as even when I direct it to the Poser Pro 2014 folder and click "Ok" the installer blinks/refreshes and nothing else happens.

Sounds like different installers.  I received mine, along with Miki 4, from Content Paradise as a freebie package for purchasing and registering PP2012.  I also recieved the SR1's for both when they became available.  Wonder what SM has to say about this.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 27 June 2013 at 4:54 PM

Modus0 - this is the exact same problem I'm having.

But apparently there's a fix on the way that will allow us to install him in PP2014. Probably an SR2...
