Hi, I just switched from a PC to a MAC and I have several (old) Poser stuff which only comes as a .exe file (like the Victoria bundle from years ago). I still would like to use that stuff on my Poser on the MAC. Searching the forum didn't bring me the revelation I was hoping for and I'm a user, not a tech guy.

Can somebody tell we if / how it is possible to use content from Windows (.exe files) on my MAC (Mountain Lion, so this Maconverter that I found is no longer supportet)?

I am using Mac OSX 10.6.8 and using Wine I can unpack DAZ installers. I only install to a dummy runtime and move the contents by hand into the runtime

Also, if it's stuff from DAZ you can always go and redownload the Mac version or use their new Install Manager.

Thank you MarianneR, that doesn't seem to work for me. I installed Wine and now when I rightclick on the Victora.exe file and choose OPEN WITH (Wine) a window opens "Creating My new Wine prefix" and then nothing happens (still nothing after 20 min.).

I just found that CrossOver is a more "sophisticated" version of Wine so I bought it from the App Store but here I get the error message (see picture below)

DAZ is now converting their MAC files into compressed format.  It is worth going back into your account and verify if the zipped files have replaced the older installers.  Reset your download and allow their Download Manager take care of your content installation.

Thx, for the Victoria files (and some other DAZ stuff) that worked fine. I still have other (obviously third party - I remember buying from e.g. Illusions Designs) stuff - can you walk me through that wine thing somehow?

They should be done by now. I went through my products & re downloaded everything.

I have 2,000+ packages & of those, less than 100 are still not in a zip format.  Most of those are older products (Gen 3 or earlier).  My V4 products that were still in non-DIM were:

It's a pity that Wine won't work for you, Mortandos. I'm sorry but I don't know anything about CrossOver or Mountain Lion. Also I installed Wine a long time ago and I don't remember if I did anything special to make it work. :(

I tried wine but crossover is easier.  if you use wine then get the free software called winebottler.  but honestly crossover is not expensive and works really well. I can open all my exe installers and install poser content with crossover.  crossover does not require windows installation and does not put you at risk of PC viruses.  its been very useful to me.

I've also used it for running clother and also for running the taosoft software eg the renderosity and rdna installers by taosoft.

I've used both Wine and Crossover. Every now and again Wine would fail but Crossover is 100% for me under 10.6 Snow Leopard. Other than that you'd need and emulator like VMware Fusion.

sometimes I actually accidentally download a .exe instead of a mac file and it is actually sometimes quicker for me to use crossover than to redownload the file in mac format.

Everyone here, you are making my day. Thank you. I was just having a conversation with someone about moving to a Mac and how I might manage to still do the things I've done for years with DAZ Installers, Morph Manager, UV mapper, and the various CR2/PZ3 editors. I might have thought to use Wine for Mac but it looks like you guys are having better luck with Codeweavers Crossover. I guess that just goes to show people why the free software can fall short and why we pay for software we really need to work.

And you know you don't have to redo all your runtimes don't you?  just copy the folder onto a USB from your PC and put it on your mac and then there is a python script to load the whole folder full of runtimes into your poser or just add them back in one at a time from within poser.

To be honest, every OS falls short - just in different ways.  

I love using OSX for my CG bits because it's hyper-efficient when it comes to renders, has UNIX under-the-hood, is highly secure for the general consumer, and I can get nearly all of the software I want for it. It's also extremely stable over the long-term. I still have a bucketload of Windows applications (*.exe) from days gone by (and have no desire to go download OSX versions of them all), but for that I use a Windows 7 instance in VMWare Fusion if I have to run one. 

Windows falls short due to the need for CPU-sucking security software, driver-hunting, Winrot/Bitrot, occasional BSODs, and the need to jump deep into an opaque and easily-corrupted registry (or monkey with Powershell) to do anything more than mundane modifications. Note that I'm not even talking about the total abortion of a UI called Metro/Modern in Windows 8.

Personally, I would much, much prefer using Linux for everything because it presents the best of all worlds, but nobody seems to want to make software for it (unless we're talking high-performance enterprise software, which is why I use it heavily at work.)  I use Linux in my home server (no UI), where I set up a website that up/downloads pictures and documents that my wife needs - which in turn allows her to not need a laptop (a 32gb iPad and bluetooth keyboard serves her needs perfectly.) 

But then hey - them's the breaks :)

Penguinisto, you've covered so much of it. Having used a 'nix Desktop OS for 3+ years straight and having used Windows for 10+ years, I've seen the good and the ugly from both. Unfortunately I'm reaching a breaking point with Windows again. I want my daily smooth as silk file and memory handling back. It's amazing how using another OS changes your perspective. I can't just "live with" the ongoing effects of bit-rot and the OS not letting go of memory constantly biting me in the butt on a daily basis like I used to. A Mac user I know witnessed me update and install stuff on Windows 7 for 2 1/2hrs. He said he'd forgotten how much more work it was to do that on Windows. Then when you throw TIFKAM on top of that it's no longer if but when I go OSX. So stick a fork in it, I need a 'nix OS for my Poser and right now it looks like a Mac.
