Subject: Dealing with shoulder bulges in conforming clothing

basicwiz ( ) posted Wed, 10 July 2013 at 9:27 AM · edited Sat, 08 February 2025 at 2:42 PM

A member recently wrote me asking why there were always these huge bubbles of cloth at the shoulders when she used conforming clothing on M4. I responded with the information that it involved a trade-off to prevent poke-through in various poses, and was basicly a limitation of conforming clothing. I suggested that she explore dynamic clothing.

She responded that the cloth room freaked her out and she was getting nowhere.

I thought about it a few moments, and realized that the new "Tighten Fit" tool in the Morph Brush easily solves this age-old Poser problem.

Herewith is a mini-tut on how to do it very simply and quickly. I realize the experts here don't need this very basic info, but I'm betting that a lot of newbies will find it of value. So Here we go...

Here is the character... a fit young man without rediculous muscles.

Here he is with a sweater conformed. Note the football uniform pads he seems to be wearing at the shoulders.

Now I've activated the Morph Tool and selected the "tighten fit" brush. On the left is the way it comes up... on the right are the changes I have made, namely selecting M4 as the figure and setting .002 as the "pokethrough margin." Don't ask why .002. Just do it. It's the value that seems to work best for me.

Final step: Run the brush over the shoulders (and chest if it needs it) until no more shrinkage occurs. At this point, the clothing is hugging the figure's curves, and you have a perfect fit. For me, this makes conforming clothing useful again. (I had pretty much abandoned it in favor of dynamic. Now, unless I'm going for something unusual or hyper real, this serves the purpose to get natural looking clothing using conformers.)

Hope it is of you to some use to you folks.

Did the tighten brush require you to have set up a fitting room simulation for the character prior to using?

I havent played with the new brushes much, but the one I tried ( I think it was the sag brush) gave me an error message when I used it on a figure without first having put the figure and the clothing into the fitting room first.

No Fitting Room or other rooms requited. The Morphing Brush is simply the best part of PP2014! I love love love it so much :D

Now, if there was a "rotate" selection I could almost do without Blacksmith for making morphs ;)

hmm I wonder if I screwed something up.. I got an error message complaining of not having started a fitting room simulation on one of the new brushes.. I'll have to test it out later on today.  I'm not sure if I had the latest SR installed at that time though... was there an issue fixed with that?

Sweet! That's an enormous improvement. Like you, I had pretty much given up on conforming clothing for exactly the same reason.

This one little feature might make the software worth owning for me.

Also to note that the improved Morph Brush tool (Tighten Fit) is in the lastest iteration of Poser.

If you dont have Poser 10/Poser Pro 2014, you ain't got it.

Wow, this looks really useful.  I'll have to try it.

ghostship2 ( ) posted Wed, 10 July 2013 at 3:18 PM

this works well on kneecaps too.. one thing...make sure that the figure doesnt have another body part touching the morph area of the clothing, it will try to pull up the clothing to the other body part in it's confusion.

Some extra tips;

First:
For collars and so that come close the the chin of the face or the hair on the figure:

  • The Moprh brush does not "see" hidden groups.

=> Turn visibility of the Hair OFF => If you have hair hanging over the collars/shoulders
=> Turn visibility on the Head OFF => If the chin or ears get in the way of high collars.

You can now use the Morph brushes to "fit -  tighten" high collars on clothing.

The morph brush works on all visible groups and ignores invisible groups.

Second:
You only have to do one side, then click the mirror button below to let poser do the other side

Third:
0.002 is a good starting value

Four:

If you want to "fit-thighten"  a complete clothing item:

Position the clothing as close as you can get it.

Select tighten brush and select the largest brush and use a Radius of 1, and set the Magnitude at 0.2

Now...
Gently do a single stroke with the thighten brush.

Select Smooth brush at a Radius of 1 and Magnitude of 0.2
Do a single Smooth stroke

Alternate thighten brush and smooth brush untill you get the "fit" required.
Thighten, smooth, tighten, smooth, tighten, smooth

If you go a step too far, click undo + undo, and you should be good to go.

Tighten, Smooth are the main tools that are automated in the fitting room.
Sometimes you have more control in the fitting room, sometimes you have more control with the brushes.

Mostly I use the Tighten brush at Radius 1, and Magnitude 0.2

Then PAINT the Smooth with a smaller Smooth brush to maintain the details in the mesh of the clothing
If the clothing is symmetrical you can use the mirror funtion, otherwise you have to PAINT the Smooth on both sides.

=> Tighten with the full brush at Radius 1, and Paint the Smooth with a smaller brush if the clothing has mesh details. Always use a low Magnitude and go slowly. :-)

While your fix is effective, I'm not sure your diagnosis of what causes the problem is accurate.  M4 has jcm's so that his shoulders don't look like boulders when they are down (compared to 3rd gen daz figures like m3, v3... and dawn).  That the clothing has boulder shoulders isn't deliberate compensation for poke-through... it's because the content creator was lazy and used m4's cr2 but didn't add any jcms to the clothing to correct for the way the cr2 dictates bending.

Calling people lazy is a really lousy thing to do.  There could be multiple reasons why someone doesn't do this, starting with the fact that they might not know how.

So, rather than belittling people, why not provide a link to the documentation that might EXPLAIN this to folks instead of just insulting them?

None of us learn by being belittled.

wow, that was an interesting comment,

thanks for taking the time to do that basicwiz , and the tips vilters

I work mainly in Carrara and love Poser 2014 as a Carrara plug in (tongue in cheek here)

In Carrara I always pose from the shoulders, never from the collars and that seems to solve the problem with really silly shoulders on the clothes.

I'll have to go and look at the conformed clothes I have and see what  is the reason again.

thanks again, glad I dropped by today.

PS the fitting  room and the new morph tools in poser are unbecradably  good ;)
