I only use Amapi 4.15 (the free one) occasionally. But, from what I've learned in it, I would rate it very highly, like a 8.5 or so. I think that for the money, it excellent. I use Rhino also, and I would have to give it a 9.5 or a 10, it's an amazing program, but for the money I think Amapi is unbeatable. It's not the easiest program to come to grips with,Rhino has it beat hands down in that area, but once you get a handle on it, it's very powerful. I still have a ton to learn about Amapi, I still can't do the things I want to in it, but from from I can do I love it.
I can't figure out how it works :( Everytime i want to do something, it doesn't do anything ... I'm not gifted for this software, i guess . But i really want to use it, it looks like a very powerful modeller . Lately, i've seen it's been used for the CGIs of the videogame of Alone in the Dark 4 to model the main character ( seen it on TV ) . I've tried to use it to subdivide my Carrara models with no luck . And there's something really annoying on my system : the mouse can't stop blinking ! So, for now i still try from time to time, but i can't say i'm learning it, since i've not been able to even make a simple model ... Brent, the head tutorial should be redone in October . Not sure it Amapi will come in the party, though ... :( litst
Macworld gave it a very low rating, although I don't always agree with there reviews. I tried using the demo a while back and although I was intrigued I found out that the program seems unstable and the tutorial that I was using was a bit confusing. Needles to say, I think it has potential but I am probably going to weight for the next version. Actually I am not buying any software until it is OS X native.
I love Amapi. I upgraded to 6.1 and I use it for most of my modelling. Carrara's spline modeller is good for some things, and the metaballs have possiblities (although I haven't explored that too much yet), but the vertex modeller is pathetic compared to Amapi. Amapi isn't too hot in the texturing area (and forget about trying to export models with texture intact), and it is a bit touchy (although most any crash I've had was due to my own screw-ups), but it is a really great, flexible tool. It does nurbs, too, one thing Carrara doesn't. Personally, I think Carrara and Amapi 6.1 are an incredible combination. If it weren't for the shaders and all, though, I probably wouldn't even care about Carrara,. Anyone who hasn't really gotten into Amapi doesn't know what they're missing :)
I, as many, recieved Amapi free when I purchesed Carrara. I was eager to learn, but the tutorial that came with it was kinda rough. I did just order the manual for $30 from Eovia. It hasn't come in yet, but I'm hoping it eases the learning curve. Good luck!

I think what I really want is a tutorial for amapi like litst made for a head in the carrara vm. I have been playing with amapi for about a week now and it is the closet thing I have had to use that is comparable to Nendo. The smoothing tools are the coolist thing I have seen in a bit. After looking at the tutorials in v6 I think I am going to upgrade. I dont really want to, but I think if I stick with amapi then things will start to pay off with character animation in Carrara. I didnt really have a problem with Carrara's modelers but I dont think that they generate the correct type of geometry for animation so I will need somthing a bit more sophisticated. -brent
Bought version 5 about a year ago and struggled with it. About 3 months ago I used it on a large project and about an hour into it everything clicked. Once you get into this modeler it is very addictive. Once you understand the basic rules, it starts becoming more and more intuitive. Someone put a lot of thought into the interface.

So for people who upgraded to carrara studio, I want to know who has tried and liked amapi? At first I really hated it but I am starting to slowly figure it out. I want litst to redo his head tutorial so it uses amapi :) It actually works a lot like a very powerful Nendo once you start with it, but I still have a lot to learn. The only reason why I think I still want to stick with it is b/c when cararra studio 2.0 comes out I want to be able to make nice character animations, and amapi looks like the type of modeler you will need to get the job done. Anyone else finding amapi to be cool or is everyone just staying with the VM & Spline tools that C has already?
