Subject: reinstalling Poser 7

I bought Poser 7 in 2008. I think I've had to reinstall it on a new computer once since then; I can't remember what I did, but I must have been able to get hold of the installer somehow (I still have the serial number saved for future reference.)

My 7-year-old macbook is nearing the end of its life and I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'll soon have to get a new macbook with Mac OS Lion. I did some googling and read one post where someone said they were successfully running Poser 7 on Mountain Lion (which is quite remarkable, but...there you go).

I have an iMac with Lion, so I tried transferring Poser to it to see if it would work. It wouldn't open and said I needed to reinstall it. The problem is, I don't have the installer any more, and I've hunted for it on the internet to no avail. The only site I found that had a download of the trial version for mac (trial is not a problem as I have a serial number) linked to the download on e frontier, which has long since been deleted.

Does anyone have any idea how I could get hold of the Poser 7 installer again? I wouldn't invest in the latest version because I hardly ever use Poser anymore, but it cost a lot and I'd be sad to lose it and never get to play with it again.

I doubt you'd persuade SM to let you have a new installer. A friend of mine's Poser 7 disk developed a fault and he couldn't get a replacement, so now he uses DAZ|Studio...

If you're willing to pay, I'd think that unregistered physical copies of P7 would crop up on eBay, or the software surplus sites, from time to time. They shouldn't cost too much. I think I paid $39.95 for mine, so I'd regard anything more than that as a rip-off.

Do take care to check that it's from a legitimate source, of course. As far as I can remember, you aren't allowed to transfer ownership of a Poser licence.

I had a look on ebay and the only ones I found only shipped to the US (I'm in Australia.)

That could be a problem, I agree. Companies often place restrictions on selling software internationally - I'm in the UK and have experienced similar barriers. Fortunately I have an Aunt in the USA who will send things on for me. ;)

So all I need to do is find someone in the US who can send it to me, lol! easier said than done..

Something has occurred to me...might be impossible but worth asking.

Surely the reason it's necessary to reinstall Poser on a new computer, as opposed to simply transferring the application, is because there are various bits of data related to it which get scattered around your computer in different locations when it's installed. I transferred the whole poser 7 folder (runtime and everything) when I tried to use it on the imac, so presumably these bits of data that get installed are elsewhere.

If I was able to locate them on my computer and transfer them to all the appropriate locations on the new computer ALONG with the poser folder, surely it ought to work just as if it had been installed? I would of course unregister it on the old computer first in case it wouldn't let me have it registered on two computers at once.

There may be some reason why this wouldn't work, but I'm prepared to try anything. It just seems so stupid that I have this program I payed $300 for and I KNOW I can run it on a new computer, yet I'm likely to lose it forever just because I don't have the installer.

I don't know enough about Mac installation procedures to answer that, unfortunately.

I routinely run my Windows version of Poser from a portable drive. It does require some files on the local computer, but these relate only to preferences, library locations and so forth. It's not hard to regenerate them.

However, the situation could be completely different on MacOS. Somebody around here must know!

sounds like it's time to upgrade the software....found a place on the net that sells P8 for $29 US....
