Would this be along the lines of what you need? I should still have the model somewhere but I don't have the time to rig it up for Poser right now. Otherwise, if you can wait until August, I could probably bust that out in like a week or two. Tops.

kirtemor ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2013 at 7:28 PM

Its a good Dragon, but not waht I am Looking for. I need the mesh to look as real as possible and be similar in wing style to Swidhelm's Dragons while looking like the Dragons from Lady MacCaffery's books. Kaiserflames has art with Dragon designs close to what I am looking for. There are others on the web with good art, but I want to avoid the odd tendrils shown by some of the more recent bookcover art. Let me know.

You need to provide detailed 2D Drawings from all sides ,front ,back ,top ,bottom ,left ,right sides and a few prespective views of exactly what you want .
That's the only way another would know what you want made in to a 3D mesh.

I hadn't heard Anne McCaffrey died in 2011. I suspect the fan art will be less prone to law suits now.

sorry, I guess the image for the eye didn't load. It is faceted like a Dragonfly's and changes color depending on the Dragon's mood, My last image is on of a blue showing the wings.

All images were gotten from the web, mostly from DeviantArt.

I tried to do it with the Nil Dragon and Sub dragon..... Neither can do the things I need it to do. And call me a perfectionist, but the wings need to be like the images above or like those on Swidhelms Dragons.

It is a georgeous Dragon.Hell, If I coud get Dinoraul and Swidhelm together on this, that would be the jackpot! But I can't seem to get ahold of either.

MargyThunderstorm ( ) posted Sun, 14 July 2013 at 8:45 AM

Have you tried the Moorland Dragon?

Teyon ( ) posted Sun, 14 July 2013 at 9:23 AM

That wouldn't work I don't think. It has the same problem Dregon has for this - no front legs.

Oops, you're right Teyon. blush

Unfortunately, this is as far as I can go at the moment. I have to get ready to leave for Comic Con. Obviously lots of work still needed but I thought maybe you'd want to see it and decide if you were interested.

Hmm. I was unaware of that.

kirtemor ( ) posted Tue, 16 July 2013 at 1:18 PM

I find that odd. There's all kinds of Fan art out there. Even some text based rpg's that have been around forever with anne's blessing. The book, The People Of Pern, started out as a piece of fan art. Also, as far as I know, Todd doesn't seem to have an issue with fan based art.  I will continue with my project.

Teyon ( ) posted Tue, 16 July 2013 at 1:33 PM

It seems that some time in the late 80's/early 90's she eased up on her restrictions (according to Wikipedia - so take that with a grain of salt).

I'm nowhere near this stage yet but for final details, do they have plating or are they more like the Fellbeasts from Tolkien, where it's more snake like skin? The illustrations for the books by her and by Todd I've seen are vague and in some cases, contradicting in terms of the skin detail.

Teyon ( ) posted Tue, 16 July 2013 at 1:43 PM

Never mind, I figured it out. Suede like...not sure that's something I can get across in my model, that seems more like a material/texture thing - not really up my alley.

kirtemor ( ) posted Tue, 16 July 2013 at 4:18 PM

Its described in the books more like a hide. Not scaly. I'm thinking something like suede... will defintely be textural. The Eyes are Faceted like an insect. Probably textural as well. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

There is a suede texture the Bagginsbill did quite a while ago.

SamTherapy ( ) posted Tue, 16 July 2013 at 9:02 PM

Somewhat OT but related to the author...

She wrote one of my favourite books - The Ship Who Sang - and one of, IMO, the worst ever written - The Restoree.  The Dragon books I've read were very, very good.  I thought Dragonflight was superb and - at the time - one of the most original books I'd read in years.

I didn't know she was no longer with us.  A great loss to SF, for sure.

Its one of the reasons I want to do this little bit of animation. To show that we can have Pern done truly and faithfully to Anne's and Todd's World. (Its now as much his as it was hers. A fan Tribute so to speak. DOne as faithfully as possible.

my favorite dragonrider book.  White dragon is Ruth of Ruatha.

don't mention red star around the firelizards, upsets them all. 😄

Jaxom didn't have any firelizards, Menolly had a couple of greens

Hope you get to feeling better soon, Teyon.  How were the cons?

As for firelizards, Menolly had 10. Ranging from a gold queen to those couple of greens.

Thanks! Before I get hot and heavy into it, which body do you prefer? These have two different locations for the end of the rib cage and start of the stomach area. They also have very different approaches to the stance/height of the character. I originally went with the image on the bottom but with the horse like feedback I was given earlier, I'm begining to wonder if the creature wouldn't stand more upright like the top image.  The bottom image has a much shorter bicep area than the upper image. Thoughts?

Right now it is a simple fix, so I'd like to nip it now before I end up causing myself more work.

Teyon ( ) posted Thu, 01 August 2013 at 1:16 PM

Think I like the bottom one.

wimvdb ( ) posted Thu, 01 August 2013 at 3:46 PM

The top one looks more like the dragon is in flight (as we see on most of the book covers). The bottom one looks more like it is standing on the ground of which we have not seen many images.

I like the bottom one - it does not give you the feeling that the dragon will topple over when he has a rider.

RorrKonn ( ) posted Thu, 01 August 2013 at 6:47 PM

My votes on the bottom one.

I like the lower one best. My wife likes the the lower one as well, though she prefers the neck on the upper without the loose skin. I tend to agree. Everything else looks great!

Thinking the same thing here...

But meanwhile, another thought came to mind: How come everyone wants to make meshes/models for stuff that everyone + dog already has visualized?

Why not strike out in an odd direction? For instance, Do me a favor - hit up some crappy but brain-stoking sci-fi, like, I dunno... The Hostile Takeover Trilogy, by Andrew Swann. Or maybe some of the more oddball stuff from Asimov or Heinlein, or maybe something beaucoup weird, like The Beserker Series, by Fred Saberhagen.

Even better? Make up something based on Expedition, where you'll find some head-exploding weird-assed alien lifeforms.

...seriously, if I never see another Star Wars, Star Trek, or suchlike that everyone has seen and done ten thousand times over? It'll be too soon, yanno?
