Subject: Do we have this yet?

zandar ( ) posted Wed, 11 September 2013 at 10:41 AM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 4:00 AM

In the Blender, I search for this feature, but I think we don't have yet.  I hope for it, it will help my project modeling faster.  At 2:51 of youtube video, they show a feature to add edge loops that flow with the mesh surface,  not just straight line.  Is there hotkey for this kind of edge loop i don't understand?

I have too Silo, but it doesn't have this kind of tool itself.  Is this only a 3ds tool?

You mean selecting the edge ring instead of the edge loop? I know Wings has it, Hexagon has it....I don't know if Blender does or not to be honest. I haven't gotten that far in my studies. Would be nice to have if it doesn't have it. I'm thinking tho, that Blender HAS to have it...it's so full-featured ;).

Thank yoiu for reply.  Not select, but to add a edge loop which to flow with the surface of the object.  they call it floow connect.  it adds edge loop that automatic matches the flow of the surface, not just straight.  You see them use it in video.  The edge loop some how knows the flow of the other loops, and automatic interpolates between them to keep the surface as predicted.  I see of no equal to this in other packages, but if any we must get it in Blender.  I know Silo does not have, and I spoke to Modo friend, and that doesn't have either.  So far only 3ds feature, unless Blender.

Better to the example.  I found the animation of feature.

Normal add of edge loop look like this:

The feature I search does like this:

I get the help to make a loop a circle before, so hope to find we can do this also.

Sorry for the confusion on my part ;).

I don't know of any modeling program that'll do that personally. That would be great to have tho, I agree. LOL.

I love my Blender more than 3ds, but I find some modeling tools for the 3dsmax very useful, but can equal it most of the time in the Blender.  I use to have 3ds at work, but no longer do I work there now.  Thank you for your answer.

Not sure if this might be of similar use if you have not already activated the Loop tools add on in Blender which might have some of the features your asking for here is a short video on the Loop Tools add on with Blenders developement there are constant add ons and improvements being done that what might not be here today will be here in the next version.

Thanks to you, Lobo3433.  I have used the loops tool addon, and find it of great importance!  I think for now there is not an equal to that feature in our Blender.  I beg forgiveness for my English.  I speak better than I type it I think, so I copy this text from the 3dsmax desciption of what they call the Flow connection:

The standard Connect tool inserts an edge loop, but makes no consideration for the flow of the geometry around the area if it’s being inserted. It simply follows the existing topology. Sometimes this is what we want, but not always.

The Flow Connect tool inserts a loop through the ring and adjusts the new edges to follow the physical outline of the mesh. For example, if you want to add a new edge around the neck of a wine bottle, then you would probably want this edge loop to maintain the existing curvature of the neck shape. Flow Connect does exactly that.

I think this for a future realease.

I do not know if you have gone to the Blender Wiki it is updated frequently and will sometimes have information of what add ons are still in beta stages and might be included into future blender releases also some decent information how some add ons function as well http://wiki.blender.org/ I have found it a useful resource to learn how many of the add ons work

That would be a nice feature.

For now, look at the SMOOTHNESS control under the Loop Cut and Slide TOOL palette. Left side of the screen near the bottom after placing the Loop Cut.

That seems to manauly do what you want. Use the SHIFT key when adjusting to get finer control. AT least this worked on a sphere..!

I do it manually for now, yes.  Thank you all for the respond.
