Subject: Good quality for IDL

vholf ( ) posted Sun, 08 September 2013 at 7:05 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 8:15 PM

I know each render demands different things, but what's the value recommended for IDL Quality in final renders?

I'm using 15 and renders look ok but I'm wondering if that value is too high or too low.

And if I use D3D render firefly, what settings do you guys use for bounces and samples?

I'm not looking for anything super realistic, I'm doing comic-style renders so I go for render speed over quality, pushing quality as far as I can withouth increasing render time too much.

Edit: Forgot to mention, Poser Pro 2014 SR2.1

For a compromise "best bang for your buck" setting, try two raytrace bounces, irradiance cache at 33, IDL quality at 67, min shade rate 0.2, and 4 pixel samples.

Depending on the render time which results, adjust accordingly.

Thank you.

How many IDL bounces should I be using?

I just bought the I13 IDL Studio Master last night and it looks awesome rendering, the little time I have played with it, plus there is a decent pdf which comes with it, which gives a good setting for the render settings. I would recomend if you have the money to spend on it.

Start with two.  Then, depending on how long your render takes, versus your tolerance for waiting, adjust accordingly.

For many scenes, such as large outdoor ones, 1 IDL bounce works perfectly fine.

If you're not aiming for realistic, there's probably not much need for cranking IDL super high. OTOH, lighting can do amazing things even with comic renders. It really all depends on the particular look you are after.
