Subject: Rendo products not allowed on Second Life

EClark1894 ( ) posted Thu, 26 September 2013 at 12:15 PM · edited Wed, 04 December 2024 at 4:37 PM

I have to admit that this doesn't really impact me that much, but it does make me wonder exactly what it is that Rendo believes is going to happen here. I'm not sure what that is exactly.

From what i read of the notice, Rendo believes that Second Life  will lay claim to the rights to products sold by Rendo simply because users upload  those products to Second Life for use by their virtual people. Can SL just claim the rights just like that? Especially when the users don't really own the rights to the products anyway. So how can they

I didn't see the notice, but the Rendo' license allows distribution of 2D renders, not 3D meshes. By uploading the products to SL or incorperating then into a 3D game, the mesh is being distributed....

Does SL not allow Rendo Products, or does Rendo not allow SL?

Linden Labs recently changed their license, and I have to say I don't blame Rendo for their stance. The "license, EULA" whatever ya wanna call it, has some really scary stuff in it. In a nutshell, Linden Labs claims that whatever you upload to their game is theirs to use in any way they see fit until the end of time.

I'm still amazed that anyone actually plays Second Life. Thought that silly thing died off eons ago...

I tried to play around in it. But everyone was really snobbish about teaching you how to model for the game. So I was out.

To be fair, the waste of time and silliness is down to what people themselves do, not the environment in which they choose to do it.

SL is just another virtual social environment that incorporates different types of activity and creativity to the likes of Facebook, Twitter, etc... and, let it be said, Renderosity! It is probably one of the least restrictive of such environments, in that, within the development framework available it is entirely the product of its inhabitants - which is precisely why it reflects the whole spectrum of human endeavour and folly, and attracts such adverse comment.

It was wanting to do SL animation modelling and AO (animation overrider) coding that led me to discover Poser a few years back. I made some real, life changing friendships there in the three years or so that I was a 'resident' - including, it could be said, Poser itself!

Back on the subject, I believe the point that Linden Labs are really trying to make is that the Second Life environment is effectively public domain, so residents who own licenced content have no business uploading it there in the first place. Their aim is to stop the illegal distribution of such content by their residents, not lay claim to it.

So they lay claim to it to stop it, even though they don't want to lay claim to it, but if they lay claim to it it will stop.

Oww! My head hurts!

I've never played or worked for SL ,don't know anything about SL.

Second Life store has cloths for L$450.00

So L$450.00 is SL play money ? you get in the game ?

So if you sold SL stuff you only get SL play money and no real world money ?

Exchanging L$ for real world currency is subject to certain limits.
My personal limit is USD 2500 per month via PayPal.

Limits vary for residents of different countries, but payment is made in their local currency.

Well the stuff made for SL would be real easy to make.
But to sell stuff at a US $1.00 or two at a time ,
Wow, ya would need a lot of sells to make a living at it thou.

Agreed, selling small items would be difficult.
Early on in SL, there was opportunity to buy "Land" at reasonable price.
Price of desireable parcels has increased along with rents for people who wish to rent space for stores or other activities.  After expenses (tier assesments, similar to condo association fees) there is possibilty for moderate cash flow.

Not all sales in SL are graphic items.  Real world (tangible) good and services are done because of country neutral payment system.  Shipping something internationally is often easier than transferring money to pay for it.

When they can augmented reality overlay second life over the boring bits of my first life, so that the symbolic actions in my second life still somehow, simultaneously, cause my real life body to accomplish those more mundane, but necessary actions, I'm in...

;-)

Well... ok, the fear of waking up to find the world is being run by evil machines that are sucking my life energy to fuel themselves, may keep me out still...

:-/

...on the other hand... probably same difference?
