Just wanted to start a thank you thread for the forum improvements.

And an IGNORE button, finally!

Whoooooo hoooo!

LaurieA ( ) posted Mon, 21 October 2013 at 10:33 AM

Yeah, I likes the ignore button. LOL

See? If you complain loud enough you can get what you want in just ten years. LMAO

Oeps, glad I found this.

I feared IE was acting up again. LOL.

The ignore is OK?
But all the rest is taking up a lot more space. Mousescrolling and more mousescrolling, oh, my poor old mouse. Please help the thing survive this.

Even a one word post is 7,5 cm tall now.
**That is 3" vertical space for one single word. **

Ah, where are the days that a page was filled? ? ? ? ?

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

fonpaolo ( ) posted Mon, 21 October 2013 at 10:58 AM

I like it! I can rotate my wide-screen monitor, reduce the page-size with Ctrl+mousewheel and see a lot of posts at once. So we only need (far) longer iPads and iPhones.

But seriously... it's a step foreward. Thanks.

AHHH!  My avatar has been framed!  😄

The topic list has too much space per thread; it makes for a lot of scrolling...

EDIT; no topics show up as read.  Also, a 'Top of Forum' button at the bottom would be welcome indeed; stick an ad at the bottom to pay for it if necessary...

Borders on the unuseable.

I've zapped all the nonsense on the right side a long time ago with ABP to get more space for the actual forum on my main 1024 x 768 screen, but if I now want to make use of the full screen width, the formatting is all jumbled up.

Either there is lots of wasted space horizontally, or I have to scroll for miles to see the actual message. (see screenshot).

Problem is everything these days is "optimized" for hand held devices and not for standard desktops anymore.

Guess I have to zap those big colorful "Stats" "Homepage" "Back To Top buttons, too, to save me some scrolling. :-(

For the record:

Windows 7 64bit, Firefox 24 + "NoSqueeze" plugin.

I think JP is spot on about the margins; If I look at this topic's page at full browser width, as-is , over half of the width is blank grey margins...

"*just a logic check here. you* ..."

Gee, and for a moment I thought I'd never use the shiny new ignore button because everyone lately behaved so well...

:-P

ANYWAY.....

"No Squint" just allows you to set Firefox' native minimum text and page sizes on a "per site" basis instead of globally.

I can disable it with a single click as well as "unzap" everything I#ve hidden by disabling ABP, and guess what ?

Now the forums waste even more space...

(See pic)

Of course if someone wants to donate me a big professional LED screen that still has the same level of color trueness than my old CRT has, I'll happily switch to another screen resolution that is more accommodating to the design the forum programmers have in mind for Rendo.

Until then, I'll just give valuable feedback.

After all, a year (or more ?) ago, the forums worked perfectly fine on my screen.

Khai-J-Bach ( ) posted Mon, 21 October 2013 at 1:21 PM

"Until then, I'll just give valuable feedback."

until it's actually logical, no, it's not "valuable" at all... as anyone that uses mods regularly on games etc - you always risk an update breaking your setup, but you can't blame the publishers for not using their code.

but you chose to ignore rather than disuss..

suits me tho.. peace and quiet....

then he could actually fix it the way he did last time instead of complaining about it .... same way I did for this site the last few times they updated, and do in Minecraft and other programs.. just get on, fix it, done. simple.

JoePublic ( ) posted Mon, 21 October 2013 at 1:29 PM

Just tested with Explorer 64bit. (shudder)

Pretty much the same result. Formatting is OK, as long as the font size is tiny.

As soon as you raise font size, everything's jumbled up and wastes tons of screen space.

Not too bad on a 24" 1920x1080 screen, but indeed, a lot of wasted margin space. Since the ads to the right hardly reach below the forum header, why not incorporate them with the header? Gives us users a nice wide message width.

Ahaa, I found the trick.
Only paying members get the full page with.

I am with LauriA here; Way to few ad's to advertise the ad's that should advertice the ad's to ad .

Oh, was the site renamed to Ad-rosity?

The ad on the missing ad page did not add that one.

Proposal to rename the site to Grey-waist-land.

I wonder why is the new standard 1920x1080? ? ? ?  We only use half of it anyway?

Should we cut our monitors down? Where is that chainsaw?

As last time ; There is absolutely NO beta testing going on here. It is completely impossible that this lay-out passed any form, way or shape of testing.

My friend got the answer.
The site is jalous at Dawn and want to go Down with Dawn.

I have to stop playing clown.
But then I am too jalous of all the frivolity tricks the webmaster is playing at us, but my feet are not worn yet. (Close, but not yet, they are still wet)

*Just trying to get in that Grey area, but unsuccessfull so far.

Now getting a lot of "undefined span" messages here below.

Dear website designer

This is a forum. A forum is a place where people exchange ideas. I come here to read what people have written and to write things which others might read.

Are you with me so far? Not too difficult to grasp, is it?

So why the fuck is the actual post THE HARDEST THING TO FIND ON THE PAGE?!

Every other thing on the page is fighting for visual dominance. Your colourful "Homepage",  "Stats" and "Back to top" buttons, your bold date stamp and "Joined", "Posts" etc, your bright "Quote", etc buttons, your "Online now!" indicator, these should NOT be the most visualy dominant objects on the page, they are, at best, links I may choose to use, but they should NOT be clamoring for my attention all the time.

The post itself is what a forum is about, it should be very comfortable to read, EVERYTHING ELSE ON THE PAGE IS SECONDARY, and should be designed accordingly.

I won't even start on the insane scrolling issue.

vilters ( ) posted Mon, 21 October 2013 at 2:49 PM · edited Mon, 21 October 2013 at 2:49 PM

@ obm 890

Completely to the point and correct.

I joke about it, but your post is spot on.

- The hardest thing to find on the whole page is what people actually write.

And this is supposed to be a "forum" to exchange ideas.

NoSquint settings are 120%/140%. "Homepage", "Stats" and "Back to top" buttons as well as other member stats have been zapped, too.

The "Double line space" when writing is still very annoying.

BTW, what good is an "Ignore" button if you still can see that the member you want to ignore has posted ?

If I want to IGNORE someone, I want that member completely gone from my "Rendo experience".

If you are still informed that that member posted something, you inevitably get curious and will "un-ignore" that member to see WHAT he/she has posted.

Of course you still might be confronted with someone's postings if the posting is cited by a member that isn't "ignored".

But a big flashy "You currently have this user ignored. To view this post you must unignore the user" banner teasing you everytime an ignored member posts ???

That's just plain stupid.

Change for the sake of it.

'Ignore' button ok but most of us won't use because even a fool can put a good point sometimes. It takes up too much space and makes the forum much less attractive to visit. Adding an extra line space after enter is too much.

I understand the effort put into the change but why did you do it?

Online Now!

I appears to me that the site was redone for use on a 2500x1600 monitor. At that resolution you can see about 4 posts.... Or for a turned monitor, that works as well.

Formatting is very odd for text. I never understood why forums need lots of "insert color of blank space here" on both sides of the posts. The advertisements on the right at the top, are no where near as wide as the dead space on either side. If you are going to add dead space, it should be black so it doesn't kill the battery on devices with non backlighted screens. (like phones, tablets, etc...) Certain browsers have a fit on portable devices as well, things are not formatted right. No biggy there thou, there are browsers that it works similar to a desktop.

On Firefox, spell check does not work in the text box. That seems odd since it is part of the browser. No idea why you would want to turn it off, or ignore a built in feature of a browser.

Change can be good, but.....
