Subject: Poser 10 - how to use IDL?

XoechZ ( ) posted Thu, 05 December 2013 at 1:47 AM · edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 1:55 PM

Hello!

I have read that one of the big advantages of Poser 10 is its implementation of IDL. But I dont know how to use it.

When I add a light to my scene, I can choose infinite, spot, point and IBL. But IBL is not IDL, right?

So, how can I add IDL to my scene?

Render --> Render Settings --> Indirect Light or Scripts --> Render Firefly --> Enable Indirect Light (The script gives you better control) Don't forget you need an environment in your scene for IDL to work as the light needs something to "bounce of" from.

Thank you!

Enabling (checking) in the render settings is all?

No more settings like intensity, color or whatever?

IDL adds the light that bounces off from props, figures and the background. You still need a "proper" light source: Either one of the conventional lights or a simple prop with a strong ambient value. I suggest you start by adding one of BagginsBill's environment spheres to an empty scene, add a figure, enable IDL, add a single infinite light and see what happens. You also need Gamma Correction enabled and set to 2.2 for IDL to work properly. Your figure skin shaders need correct Gamma Correction, too, so download SnarlyGribblys SceneFixer and EZSkin scripts.

Here is V4 with her default textures set up using EZSkin. The EnviroSphere with an outside panorama was hidden for that render. Only a single infinite light at 100% strenght. Left with IDL turned on, so that the light bounces back from the EnviroSphere, right with IDL turned off.

Ok, thanks for the explanation.

This seems to work a bit different than I am used to from DAZ Studio. There you had something called "Uber Environment2" which could be set as an indirect light source. I loved it for all kinds of night scenes. Therefore I just added an UE2, set it to indirect lightning, gave it a light blue tint and lowered the intensity to about 20%. This gave me a very smooth and even light all over the scene - perfect for moonlight.

But this was DAZ Studio. Now I am a Poser user and there is a lot new to learn.

You can use anything as a lightsource in Poser. Just raise the ambient value in the material settings. Here I used a square prop to cast a green light onto V4.

And here it's just the IDL light from the prop with the standard light switched off.

Thank you very much Joe!

Here's another tut on lighting that you may want to experiment with.  I've had some excellent results.

I use Bagginsbill's, and he also has several other items you may want to dl for your work: https://sites.google.com/site/bagginsbill/free-stuff/environment-sphere
