Subject: Question about Dawn

wolfyfeetz1 ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2013 at 9:57 AM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 4:45 AM

I'm more of a V4 or genesis user but I looked into Dawn recently and found that nothing would fit without major rework. Now since Daz 4.6 came out it has been full of bugs. Is this a bug or is Dawn just a problem figure?

DAZ Studio 4.6 isn't full of bugs, really it isn't.  Missing a lot of features that should have been added years ago, but not that many bugs really.

Dawn was designed in such a way so that clothing merchants would have to make DS specific versions of every outfit.  You can't use the Poser versions in Studio.  And lots of merchants don't seem to be doing this.

You also cannot use Studio's auto-fit system with Dawn to fit V4/Genesis outfits.  Unless DAZ allowed it no one can sell a autofit clone for Dawn.  Though you could make one for yourself, there are some forum posts at Hivewire about how, but I have no idea how well it works.

But if you have Dawn outfits designed for DAZ Studio they seem to work just fine.  But that's a pretty limited wardrobe.

Actually there's a video tut on yourube that shows how to convert Dawn clothes to DS-it's pretty easy to follow. The Dawn-V4 clone tut at Hivewire works well & it does work too. I've tried both justto see. Some poser items do work for Dawn in DS -I've tried that too.

Msorrels,

Actually since the release of Daz 3d 4.6 I have had constant crashes and have been unable to preform searches of add tags. When I go to tech support they advise me to uninstall content mangr and reinstall. It does no good. 4.6 is a bug, 4.5 worked much better.

I apreciate the explaination about Dawn though this is something I did not know and wanted to ask to make sure it was not just another issue.

Guardian,

Thanks I will look into that and see how much work is involved. Kind of makes the figure less valuable though.

Not sure which way you man that - V4/Genesis clone shapes for Dawn would indeed require DAZ' permission, but a Dawn clone shape for Genesis 1/2 would require Hivewire's permission.

The only way I know of for clone shapes -is to make your own for personal use. They can not be sold.

The orginal post talked about fitting clothes to Dawn, hence my comment.  But yes if you wanted to fit Dawn clothes to G1/2 you would have get a Dawn clone shape and only Hivewire could authorize that.  And since neither of the two parties are interested in playing that game, you are left to having to make your own clone.  So interchange really isn't all that supported.

As for the content manager causing problems, I don't use it, which solves that problem. I use Advanced Library to manage my content.  Since it works the same with both Poser and DS I get a much more unified view that works with either app the exact same way.  I don't get the pre-generated Content Manager tags though (I have to setup that kind of thing myself in AL).  But AL has much better and faster searching and filtering, even if it is very long in the tooth and not being developed further.  I've never had any problems with the Content Manager working though (I just don't like it).

When DAZ Studio crashes it will offer up a crash report, looking at it can often offer clues into what exactly went wrong and how.  But DAZ technical support has been kind of weak in the last year.  I doubt anyone that could read your crash report ever sees it.  Didn't used to be that way.

If you get a crash dialog, press more and look at the Stack Trace.  It shows you what exactly crashed.  Save the crash dump out and open a Zen helpdesk ticket with the crash zip attached.  Do it everytime it crashes and you can get a crash dump.

My new policy is I'm reporting every single issue with any DAZ product I find.  I'm fairly sure I'm on their list of "annoying" by now but they are fixing things (mostly content bugs, I don't have that many crash issues with DS).  Post a screen shot of the stack trace to this forum, perhaps someone here can offer you some clues.  There are a lot of system things involved in the way Content Manager works (which was a bad design) it's possible that is what is causing your issues.

Thanks, I will look into advanced library to replace content mngr.

I doubt AL will solve your crashing issue though, Content Manager still will be running and may very well crash even if you aren't using it at all.

My advice about content manager crashes is pretty much the same as DAZ's.  Unistall the content manager.  Reboot the computer (Content Manager is a service, and just uninstalling it may not stop it very well).  Then after the reboot manually delete all it's data files.

For me Content Manger lives in d:AppsDAZ 3DContent Management Service

(I don't install apps to Program Files in general because that can cause all sorts of issues)  It appears to stick it's data files in a sub-directory of that directory (which is a really bad design if people install it to Program Files).

There is also a vlogs directory with some interesting data logs.  Might be some clues there too.

The way the database server in Content Manager works is kind of complicated and could easilly cause issues, especially if you are running any 3rd party firewall software.

DAZ Studio also has a log file.  It usually contains lots of clues as to the cause of a crash as well.  The log for DAZ Studio is located in your user application data directory under windows.  It's %APPDATA%DAZ 3DStudio 4log.txt and %APPDATA%DAZ 3DStudio4 Public Buildlog.txt for the public beta.

I tried DS 4.6 and noticed a lot of bugs. I am not crazy about it. The older versions worked great up until 3.0

DS 4.6 works fine for me.

As to Dawn I picked up the Xdresser licence for her recently and it works quite well, as well as Autofit. Along with DS smoothing which really helps fit stuff better I now have a large array of clothing for Dawn at a very low cost.
