Subject: DSON is where?

Nicola678122 ( ) posted Thu, 09 January 2014 at 11:21 AM · edited Wed, 24 July 2024 at 12:50 PM

I'm a new Poser (Debut) user and I have tried to install Dawn. I know I'm not compatible, since Debut is Poser 8 and Dawn requires Poser 9+, but it does run and will insert a base Dawn into a scene. Some of the operations I try on Dawn I get an error message that says DSON is missing (or unable to find it... something like that), is DSON necessary for using Dawn in Poser and if so, where can I find it?

Thanks...

Dawn is only compatable with Poser 9+

Debut offers none of the features to make Dawn, Dson or any of that stuff work. Here's a link to the feature comparison:

I understand all that, and I am going to upgrade, but my question was where does one get DSON? Is it part of later versions of Poser? Is it part of DAZ3D? Can I download it from the DAZ3D or SmithMicor website?

Thanks...

And there are 2 versions of Dawn, one for Poser and the other for DS.  As JimTS posted, Dawn is totally incompatible with Poser Debut.  You are expecting too much from an application which only provides very basic and limited tools.

Installing Debut was me testing my abilities to run it, gaining some experience running it, and whether Poser looked like it would do what I want it to do, before laying down much more hard earned money for a better version (Debut cost me $12). As far as I'm concerned, Debut is only a learning tool, nothing more. Installing Dawn (I even managed to install the Mac version) was also just a test, I knew when I installed it that it was designed for 9+, but I'll hang on to Dawn's Runtime (I installed it in a separate Runtime, as you suggested a few days ago) and use it with Poser ∞.

Everything is under control...

It's not "totally" incompatible. You can load and use the figure in Poser debut, you'll just lose most of the features, but you can load and pose the figure.

From my limited testing, I'm unable to pose her, any attempt distorts her horribly, she looks like a Picasso...

1 See my previous statement

2 Posable well no, boned but not really rigged

3 Dson is a DAZ3D product so guess where you'll get support for it

OK, when I tested dawn in Poser Debut, I only loaded her to see if she'd load, I didn't try posing her.  Sorry for the misinformation. (I got Poser debut free from Smith-Micro and although I already had Poser 9 at the time, I tried it out a little, but didn't try to do any serious work with it).

But, yeah, if you can get Poser 9 or 10, by all means do so, it's an enormous improvement over Debut. People on eBay are selling brand new copies of P9 for as little as $50, and Amazon has Poser 10 for only $82.

To answer the original question: DSON is available at the Daz3d website. It is a stand alone product and does not require DazStudio to be installed.

I think I found it, listed as the DSON editor?

Type "DSON" in the search window iof the Daz homepage.

The "DSON Importer" is the one you want. And yes. It is free.

To reiterate what has been said above: It DOES NOT work with Poser Debut. It was not designed to work with it.

And with that,  I'm at the end of my ability to help. It doesn't work for me. There are several here who have had success with it, and I'm sure they will help with specific questions you may have about getting it correctly installed and working.

Why would you need DSON for Dawn she is not a DAZ product

or are you referencing a Genesis character

There's a DSON version and Poser version. I suppose you could use both if a morph, character or outfit was made for one version and not the other and still use Poser to render in.

I was also playing around with other characters. It was with the Basic Female included with Victoria 4 (I believe). I'm in a learning mode so I'm just trying all sorts of things.

This is the message I was getting:

Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "/Users/Shared/My DAZ 3D Library/Runtime/libraries/Character/DAZ People/Basic Female.py", line 1, in ?

    import dson.dzdsonimporter

ImportError: No module named dson.dzdsonimporter

I am going to get Poser 10 so it probably will take care of itself, when I do that.

I'm finding 'anything' that uses Genesis 2 generates that error message...

it sound like you are trying to load Genesis not Dawn. "Basic Female" was the first Genesis i believe, i know there is a product over there called " Poses for Gensis basic female". That may be why it is calling dson.

Genesis wasn't made for poser, dson is daz way of appeasing those that have too much invested in poser to make the switch.

DSON is DAZ's studio native file format for describing a scenes, characters, materials, etc. The DSON importer for Poser allows Poser 9+ to read that new format.

You're getting that error message because you're using a version of Poser that does not support the importer calls that Poser has plugin support for or the wrong version (when you install the 64 bit version in Poser 9 or 10, which does not support 64bit).
