Subject: Talk Designer

I am not having much luck at the moment! First I tried to get M4 to talk in Mimic 3 Pro and I find that there are not any supported files for him included. Next I tried to make Rex talk in Talk Designer. There are supported files included. However as soon I apply my talk, txt and Visemes file Poser Pro 2014 crashes.I have no idea what I am doing wrong unless the latest updates have caused the crash. Before I put in a support ticket at Smith Micro I thought I would ask here if any other members have had this problem with Talk Designer and Rex? My Poser Pro number 10.0.3.26066. Cheers

I just checked Rex in PP2014 SR3 using the supplied .wav files and he works just fine. i72600k and 8 gig ram on Win7 Ultimate.

Did you use the supplied .wav or one of your own? The manual contains info on the Talk Designer, but there are a few omitions and the Mac info is incorrect. I spent a long time finding this out helping someone else on another board.

If you post your work flow I can help you out or if you are willing to wait a bit I will whip up some kind of tute for you. If you are using your own audio file make sure the sampling rate is 1024

parkdalegardener ( ) posted Sun, 26 January 2014 at 7:11 AM

Actually the sample rate should be 22050 uncompressed. A slight brain fart there and it is too late to edit the post. Also be sure you are using a mono file. Stereo not supported.

parkdalegardener ( ) posted Sun, 26 January 2014 at 8:08 AM

Here is a quickie using an uncompressed, 22050 bit rate, mono; audio file. Everything left at the defaults. No supplemental text file used.

Many thanks for your replies. I was using a Text to speech file I made myself. Perhaps this is the problem. However I have use these before with Rex without any problems!

I will post my settings later today as I have to go out now.Cheers

One thing I have also noticed is there is no Lipsink folder.Perhaps I should reinstall Poser? Could you be so kind and do a quick tutorial for me just in case I am doing something wrong! Cheers

The most likely problem is the sample rate of the audio file. The Poser manual needs to be updated with info like this.

Correction....... You say there is no LipSync folder? That may be your problem right there. That folder contains the Face data for each character that comes with Poser.  Your sig says you have all versions of Poser. If you are doing this in PP2014 I must ask if you have downloaded all the files when you upgraded or installed your new version of Poser,

I'll whip up a fast tute and get back to this thread but check your installation while I'm gone. I do not have a LipSync folder in PP2010 but I have it in both PP2012 and PP2014.

Ok. So in order to use Talk Designer we need two things. An uncompressed single channel audio file, (mono not stereo); and a Viseme map for the character.

For PC users the audio file would be recorded in wav format. For Mac users the format is aiff. Place your audio file in your Poser Content->Runtime->LipSync->Audio Files folder. You could search for them in any location you wish but if you put them here they will show up in the drop down list in Talk Designer.

Viseme Maps: The characters that come with Poser have these maps included. Third party figures may or may not have a viseme map. You can buy software that helps you make these but you can make them yourselves. They are simple xml files. Since TB has one for Pranx we won't bother with this step. Good thing as that is a separate tute all together. Place your viseme xml file in Poser Content->Runtime->LipSync with the ones that come standard for Poser figures. Now your viseme is in the drop down list in Talk Designer. Again, you could search to whatever location you've been storing this file but as you will probably want to use this again it's much easier in the drop down.

With this much done you can now open Poser and load your figure.Open the Talk Designer as shown.

It's all pret

ty straight forward.

  1. Select your sound file from the drop down list. I've used one included in Poser. If you haven't placed it in the directory mentioned above use the ... button and hunt it down from wherever you've got it stashed.

  2. Type the words that are contained in your sound file. Fine tuning can be done by typing phonetically.

  3. Select the correct Viseme map for your figure from the drop down list or find it on your computer by pressing the ... button. Make sure the figure selected is the one you want to do the talking.

  4. Press Apply. If your scene doesn't have enough frames Poser will add them automatically for you.

That's it. You're done. Play or render your animation.

If you need to make adjustments just open the Talk Designer window and adjust the movements as necessary.

I wrote the above to help some one on another board. It should help you with the workflow. If you need it explained better or you need to see this with Rex as the figure let me know. I did this in PP2012 but the same applies to PP2014 which I used to do the Rex anim.

parkdalegardner,!!! You were right.I had a lot of problems.First I found the Lipsync folder in another second Smith Micro folder. How that has happened I do not know! Also about another 7 gigs of content. When saving text to speech files they have to be 25 khz 8 bit mono for them to work in Talk Designer. Thanks to you I am back on track. I think my problems started a while back when I re installed Poser. Cheers

Quote - Just one more question. What do you mean by typing phonetically? Cheers

As words do not always sound the way they are spelt, you sometimes have to alter the spelling so that text to speech or the shape of the mouth look correct when you are animating them.

A good way to get the phonetic spelling/pronunciation of a word is to look in the dictionary. Most software will recognise commonly used words but can have trouble with names and less commonly used words.

parkdalegardener ( ) posted Tue, 28 January 2014 at 7:53 AM

It appears that question has been answered. Phonetic spelling is really a fine tuning feature or for use with languages other than English. Some letter combinations have a different sound depending upon the language being spoken. For most uses it will be un-necessary. Glad you have it working. Talk Designer is a fine feature and works well. It's a shame the Poser manual does not give enough information about it.

In another thread you asked about Mimic files for M4. You do know that you can make the visemes for M4 so you can use him in Talk Designer. Any figure for that matter can be used if you make up the viseme file. A viceme file is just a call to a corresponding morph on the figure. It is a bit of work but pretty straight forward.

Someone in that thread wanted DMC files for the DAZ horse. I don't do Studio but one could make vicemes for it and use it in Talk Designer easily enough.

Once again many thanks to all. Is there some sort of tutorial for making visemes and also how do I make the .txt file to support my Text to speech files? Cheers

As for a text file just type in what the text to speech editor is saying.

Making visemes is done in a text editor. It is just matching a morph to a sound. I wrote on how to do this some where. I'll have to look. It may not have been on this site.

It's my birthday tomorrow so if I'm not back right away you know why.

Here's a present for you on my birthday. M4's viceme map. This wll work on Win or Mac.

I'll show you haw to make them tomorrow. The booze is kicking in so my attention span is lacking. hahahaha

Just change the .txt to.xml and drop it where Poser's other viceme files are. I haven't bothered to make the face files for you but it should work. I'll show you how to make these files for anything tomorrow as I can't find where I wrote the tute on this.
