Subject: Classic Hollywood?

ebarocela ( ) posted Sun, 16 February 2014 at 2:13 AM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 6:40 AM

I've been searching for a model of a classic Hollywood movie set or stage, with old cinema cameras, lights, etc.  Does anyone know if that exists for Poser?

Thanks,

Ed

The request is rather ambiguous.  What do you consider "classic"?  40's?  30's?  20's?  Billboard cutout backgrounds?  Soundstage type sets?

Historical photos will help.

Good point.  Thanks for your comment.  To me, the classic period is when the studio system was in effect, and the same basic technology was used.  That means round lights, often with barn doors, not rectangular light arrays.  Movie cameras had film magazines consisting of two circular reels perched on top of the camera body, not oblong magazines canted at an angle.  These characteristics represent anything from the silent film era through the end of World War II.  But anything would be welcome at this point.  The only movie set with equipment I've found on Renderosity is an outdoor patio that isn't very technically accurate.  And I haven't found any movie studio or sound stage models at all.

basicwiz ( ) posted Sun, 16 February 2014 at 12:59 PM · edited Sun, 16 February 2014 at 1:13 PM

Just FYI... the equipment you have posted is from the SILENT era. Sound cameras were much more bulky, being basically enclosed in a sound-proof case.

(Sorry, my background from teaching cinema history is showing!)

Yes, I believe you're right.  Unless the sound was going to be dubbed in later. :)

Anyway, that's the look I wish were available.

Try conducting a search @ sharecg.  I believe I may have seen several items which may fit your needs.  The other "Rendo" site (adult) does have a couple of sets for sale.  You will need to search their marketplace.

Thanks very much!  I've already found something I could use at sharecg.  I haven't yet found this other "Rendo" site you referred to, but I'll keep looking.

You don't think the camera shown could pass for a Mitchell NC 35mm  (apparently the standard studio camera for the period) or--viewed side-on-- a Technicolor?  A Mitchell BNC (an NC in a "blimp" casing to dampen the camera noise) would be slightly more bulky, but would likely be what would have been on most sound stages.  Sadly, the only thing I don't know is where to find a 3D model of that.

ebarocela ( ) posted Sun, 16 February 2014 at 5:22 PM

I did find a very nice model on TurboSquib, but I'm not paying $64 just for that.

jcarp ( ) posted Sun, 16 February 2014 at 7:41 PM

Not that it helps, but here's nice photo reference for a Mitchell in a blimp:

http://www.mitchellcamera.com/photogalleries.html

You'll also be wanting to add a camera boom (crane, jib) to your list.  Never seen a self-referencing Hollywood movie without one on the set.  You made me realize I've never seen The Day of the Locust (Burgess Meridith and Nathaneal West fan that I am), which I've now saved to my Netflix q.  Thanx.

I was looking for a photo of Hitchcock riding on a boom.  This isn't it,  and it's late Hitch, but you can see some detail on the camera mounting.

http://notes.communique.co/weekend-tip-16-17-3/

The question is--in the photo I remember- why he was riding the boom.  He was noted for never looking through the camera, having storyboarded his movies to a fare-thee-well.

The set I found on ShareCG has a dolly crane, lights and a director's chair.  Just about everything I need except for the movie camera itself. :(

Thank you so much!  It looks very much like an old Mitchell 35 mm movie camera, and I couldn't ask for a more representative design. :)

Cybermonk ( ) posted Tue, 18 February 2014 at 11:53 PM

Thanks guys. Yeah it's not an exact copy. More of an interpritation. Some of that's because of limited reference and some because Im trying to keep the polycount down. I don't want to make the mesh so dense that it takes a week to render.

Nice image. I found a ton of stuff on google. Most shot from the right side of the camera. So you got to get creative when modeling the left side.

Still, the model you made is more than good enough to sell on Renderosity.  I'd buy it! :)

Thanks a bunch I apreciate that.  I love to model. It's good to take projects like this. It helps you grow your skill set.

Most of the time the other side is simply the door to put film in the camera.  Last time I had one of these in my hands, at least, that was what it was on that model.  It wasn't long  that the earlier models who used internal reels went to the cartridge reel as it shows in the picture, and a modified canister reel that slid into a set of guides on the back of the camera.  Interestingly enough, some of those old rear canister cameras relied on the weight of the film canister to offset the weight of the lens assembly.

I designed in Unigraphics a lot where I used to work, but I haven't invested in any decent CAD software for my home computer.  So I can certainly appreciate the skills it takes!

So when can i get a copy of the camera? :)

Thanks,

Ed

With textures applied it should look very realistic.  That means I'll be able to put in the foreground of my scenes. :)

Hello again.  Any progress on that movie camera?  It doesn't have to be rigged or have fancy textures to be useful to me. :)

Thanks!
