I do have P6, that's my first 3D program, but it's on a 32bit WinXP machine. P9 or P10 would be good matches for Win7. Using old software on a new OS, or new software on an old OS, you can expect problems. So, I would consider it pointless to update to P7 (and probably even P8). P9 or P10 will exploit all your CPU cores while rendering, whereas P6 did one bucket at a time (single thread).
I began in P6. I would consider P9 or P10 to be as easy to use, with the added benefits of multiple libraries any old where (except not in program files), a much better morph tool, SubSurface Scattering, and InDirect Lighting. If you get the pro version, you can network render animations (use your old/secondary computer to help your primary). We have a fitting room now.

OSes: Win7Prox64, Win7Ultx64
Silo Pro 2.5.6 64bit, Vue Infinite 2014.7, Genetica 4.0 Studio, UV Mapper Pro, UV Layout Pro, PhotoImpact X3, GIF Animator 5
If you want to get the most leverage out of your content, Poser 2014 is the best value. It changes everything.
64-bitness is nice, but that is one of the lesser advantages.
Got clothing for a figure that doesn't have the morphs your figure uses? "Copy Morphs From" is a 1-click solution to put those morphs into the clothing.
Want to put clothing designed for 1 figure onto another figure? A few (less than 5) minutes of quality time in the fitting room and any clothing fits on any figure.
Don't want to play with the fitting room? - There is another solution - Wardrobe Wizard. It has been an add on to Poser since Poser 8.
Wish your legacy figures could bend & move like the latest & greatest figures? Weightmapping and subdivision are your solutions. I can make the Low Res Poser 2 figures bend better than V4 out of the box. (subdivision=3)
Poser Pro 2014 is the pro companion to P10. PP2014 has the fitting room and network rendering (good for doing batches of test renders, or animations). It's Firefly renderer is somewhat faster than P9/PPro2012. You need at least P9 to use weight mapped figures.
If you make large complex scenes, Pro's 64bit feature will make a big difference because it can use as much memory as you have in the computer.
If you're short on budget, then at least get P9/PPro2012; Python has changed since P8/PPro2010, and the IDL and SSS have improved.

A quick search of the forum seems to indicate no probs with Windows 7 and Poser 6 provided you take two steps
1 Do not install into C:program files - either c:Curious labs or on another drive. UAC locks down changes to stuff in ProgFiles
2 Do not install Internet Explorer 11 as it stops the libraries working. No update for older versions of Poser, only P9 and higher
Poser 11 , 180Gb in 8 Runtimes, PaintShop Pro 9

I still have Poser 1 (or 2? first PC version anyway) and it runs fine on Win7-64. No issues with libararies or plugings, since there aren't any. Work is done on Pro2014 though.
Nevertheless: when updating just leapfrog to the most recent one, P10 / Pro2014. Why not? Program stuff sits fine on your C:programs... folder, but the content does not belong there indeed.

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.
visit www.aRtBeeWeb.nl (works) or Missing Manuals (tutorials & reviews) - both need an update though
Poser 8 won't work with IE 11. I wouldn't think it would matter to Poser 6, but I don't have IE 11 installed . 9 and 10 have a service release to allow them to work with IE11.
If you are in the US, Poser 10 is $86 at Amazon with free shipping.

"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."At the risk of sounding like a SM salesman...
I have yet to buy an upgrade of Poser that was not worth upgrading to. In each release, especially 8 forward, there were extremely significant feature addions/refinements that more than justified the expense in my mind. And yes... I buy upgrades on the first day of release. I put my money where my mouth is.
I have recently started going through all of my Poser content, and am weeding out/fixing everything that doesn't work right in the recent Poser versions. Most often this is a texture issue and is faily easy to take care of. Another thing I've been looking at is the light sets that came with older items. They are ALWAYS wrong for the current versions of Poser, especially if you use IBL.
Yes, there is a learning curve with each upgrade, but that is why this forum is here.

One difference between Poser 7 and earlier, and Poser 8+, is that the later versions exclusively use .png thumbnails rather than the .rsr files which older content used. Dizzi has a free program for Windows that will create a .png thumbnail from all of the .rsrs in a runtime folder automagically...

"Oh - the manual says that? I have both 5 & 6 on a flash drive and can just plug it into any computer I am sitting at and it just works. I have tried on Windows up to Versio 8.0 and it works. Have not tried to install to thehigher versions and I am not sure if it would or not.
Poser 7 wants to install into windows when I try this method and I have not really tried it since I keep forgeting to bring my Key code. It might work this way.

Poser 7 is also self-contained and portable, although I haven't tried it on a removable drive. I still use my original installation, which is on its fourth computer; I just copied it over and made sure the external runtimes were in the correct place, or edited LibraryPrefs.xml to point to where they actually were....
