Does anyone still have the models from Thorneworks before it was taken down? Could you send it to me? Thanks in advance.

Unless there is permission to redistribute the files nobody can send them to you. Thorneworks as far I know has pulled all it's stuff, presumably to be added to a store near you soon.

Ummmmmm, you would have to ask Thorne about that. Most people aren't fond of having their models redistributed by others without permission. It makes them uneasy. It's one thing to download it from their site. It's a different matter to have their meshes and cr2's being passed all around without any kind of control, like whether the original readmes are being included and all manner of things that a person loses control over, if they allow unrestricted redistribution.

You could email Thorne and ask him if you could get the faerie from him, I did that a while back on one of his calendar faeries and because of the circumstance he sent her to me. That way he can keep better track of who has them. Marque

According to Thorne, his motivation for pulling his wonderful downloads had nothing to do with moving them "to a store near you." Rather, as I understand the issue, they were pulled because Thorne was tired of fending off hysterical, irate decency crusaders, who accused him of somehow enabling the makers of Poser kiddie porn. An absurd charge, of course--Thorne's work is a sweet little song to playful innocence and beauty, and has nothing at all to do with pornography, child or otherwise. I was frankly appalled and saddened when I heard he'd shut down--seems to me, any determined and minimally skilled Poser user could, with easily available morphs, make their own anatomically correct, child-like figures and do nasty things with them. Should we then demand that Poser 4 be pulled from the shelves? Ridiculous.

That is terrible! To further the analogy, should we not have real human children at all because some of them might possibly be exposed to stuff like that? Pathetic... don't let the bstrds get you down! I think it is really stupid for the government to try to make laws that companies creating art which SOME people might twist to another purpose, would be responsible and liable for damages. That's even more pathetic. Especially since the US seems to still have diplomatic relations with certain countries that have a large sex-trade. Especially since the fashion industry encourages a certain view of people as just beautiful sex objects... Pathetic.

That's quite possible Mosca, I'm not too up on the reasons Thorne pulled his stuff. But if what you say is true, it would not surprise me to see them appear in a store for the simple reason that he will be better able to track who gets what and keep a tighter control that way, thereby reducing any accusations he may have received at the hands of whatever sick individuals were accusing him. I doubt that his faeries will be lost for long too many people seem to like them. Of course, for what little I know on the subject he may have had other reasons to pull his products, I honestly don't know. I do believe though that he'll happily make them available again some time in the future, one way or another.

Questor--Thorne has written about the control issue in earlier threads, so yes, that seems to be part of the deal. It's a futile gesture, of course--if, say, a hundred people buy a figure, how do you as the vendor sort out who's doing nasty things with them? And how many of those hundred customers will illegally re-distribute the figure to their friends, or (gasp) through a warez site? ReadMe disclaimers aside, the vendor/maker has absolutely no control over what happens to a figure after it's sold or given away. Really, the whole thing would be hilarious if it weren't so stupid and sad. It's gotten to the point where you can't post a nude unless she's got 40-DDD breasts and five pounds of pubic hair.

Well, there are ways to track items, digital signatures of files (zip or included) so any that show on "them" sites can be tracked back - though then there's the hard part of actually prosecuting any infractions. There are other ways too but they get progressively more expensive up to the point where it's just not worth the bother. I agree with you, it would be funny if it wasn't so stupid. Thorne will decide what he wants to do and how best to limit any risk or delusional delinquent's attacks against him. I don't fully understand it all myself. Poser comes with little children, if people are going to indulge paedophile fantasy's they're hardly likely to start publishing the damn things for normal folks to download or purchase. That sort of filth is usually kept pretty close in a circle, certainly not dumped into an area filled with thousands of people randomly. But then, some people just can't help themselves. Though I guess that's a whole new subject all in and of itself. ;) Dunno about your comment on nudes though. I've seen a few, admittedly a very few, but a few nonetheless that don't have 40-DDD, though mutation does seem to be the more popular form. G

Doesn't selling a model that COULD be used commit child pornography fall under the same law that protects gunmakers from suit when their guns are used to commit a crime?

I think some states (Texas, for one) have laws that specifically protect gunmakers from lawsuits, but there aren't any I'm aware of that protect 3D modelers. On the other hand, I don't think you'd be legally liable if someone made illegal images with one of your models; I mean, give me Posette and the stock poser dog and in a few minutes I could make pictures that could get me thrown in jail in seven or eight states--yet no one's talking about getting rid of Posette, or the dog (and no one's talking about the need to protect dogs from the ravages of virtual doggy-porn), or any legal action against the folks at Curious Labs for providing the tools with which virtual doggy porn might be made. I don't think it's a legal issue for Thorne--he's just sick of being the subject of a small scale witch hunt, perpetrated by self-righteous, self-appointed Protectors of the Children, those singularly dirty-minded individuals who look at Thorne's work and see pornography (or the almost equally alarming potential for pornography), where the rest of us see innocence and joy.

Poser is, of course, "porn periphenalia" and is subject to seizure by the Taliban and authorized or unauthorized representatives thereof.

Good points. Witch hunts can be pretty hard to take, especially unwarranted ones. And it must make him feel kinda sick to have his faeries used in perverted ways, too.

Whoa-there! In case there was some misunderstanding from the previous posts, his Thorneworks site IS still up, though his Faerie models are now sold through brokers. from his page: "ThorneWorks regrets to have to announce that until further notice, or until such time as an alternate method of distribution can be established, we will be discontinuing our free Faerie model downloads for Poser. Models will still be available at various 3D model brokerage sites around the world wide web." His "Wysteria" figure is in the store here. He still has other free props & tutorials at Thorneworks. superproxy, even when they were on his site, each of his Faerie models was only free for the one month in which it was released. No one else had permission to redistribute them, then or now.

Just mention Thorne's name and the whole topic is brought up again in a long chain of responses. I guess that shows his overwhelming impact on the poser community. Thorne's one of the greats. :o)

He also still has the Acorn figure for sale at 3D Commune's store. He hadn't given a faerie away in quite a while only one faerie this year. He pulled his other characters from the stores and only the Acorn character was left for sale until he worked with Menhdi on Wisteria. I think a lot of what happened was blown way out of proportion, it wasn't even his faeries people were concerned about, it was the Daz kids. Sorry but I don't think he is a martyr, I think he just made a business decision. If I'm wrong I'm sure he will correct me, and I think he should be the one to state his reasons, not 20 people giving their own opinions as to why he quit giving away the calendar faeries. Marque

Reason number one for less, then none- I simply could not keep up with all the requests, and with developing a new character every month. Of course now I have so many I don't know what to do with them all... (So I guess that means I'll be having to start giving them away again =};-}> ) And the other reason was as eloquently stated above- too many wild accusations flying around because of a small handful of less than scrupulous people. I really enjoy giving faeries away, and I still do enjoy it. Sure selling them is okay too I guess, but I never needed to sell them to make a living, and to me it's more fun to give away free stuff anyway. Why, you're all quite welcome! Yes, Marque, previous Calendar Faeries will be coming available again, but I dare not speculate as to when- it's hard enough dealing with my rather serious ADHD and the things that I HAVE to do, like going to work every day! ;o) So, though I do fully intend to get these other things done eventually, I have learned that making promises based on good intentions is not nearly as dependable as waiting until I'm sure I can get it done in a timely manner before announcing or promising anything ;o) I can tell you however, that I have actually started WORKING on the "Classic Calendar Faerie Collection" as a project, to be presented in CD collections of 3 characters per disc with associated props and paraphenalia. Then again, I may just pop into random threads like this one from time to time and leave little faerie presents laying around, like Anemone. It's more fun than hiding eggs at Ostara! =};-}>
