Subject: Good believable set of eye textures WITHOUT baked-in reflections?

Believable3D ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2014 at 10:47 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 11:03 PM

Going through my character files and it seems almost everything has the faked-in reflections, with only a very few exceptions. Then there are others I've seen that ... well, they just don't look like real eyes, to be honest (over-saturated colours, less-than believable patterns).

Anyone know where there's some good ones available? I found a couple pretty decent ones in my runtime as part of Robynveil's SSS Base 4, but I don't have a whole lot else.

Also have Sydd Raven's Vanilla Sky texture, which doesn't bake in reflections, and the maps are pretty good. But I'd like a nice full set of just eyes that I can mix and match.

I have found Elite Eyelights for V4/M4 @ DAZ3D pretty good for eye textures.  The maps do not have baked in specular or reflection highlights which can be added separately.  Use EZSkin to substitute shaders and I think you will get what you want.

Besides, it is on sale right now @ 80% off.

Thanks, hborre. Sounds like the price is right, anyway. :)

The Elite characters for M4/V4 have nice eyes. PDEyes here at Rendo are nice too. Unfortunately a few of them (including some really nice ones) have baked in specular, but most of them do not. Some of Rebelmommy's eyes are nice too; again, sadly it's hit or miss as to whether they have baked-in specular or not. Many of Godin's characters have nice eyes. There's a character at RDNA called Narre whose eyes I just love, and again no burnt-in specular.

Surreality's RealEyes at DAZ are also wonderful.

hornet3d ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2014 at 2:28 PM

For any of my V4 or M4 characters the first thing I do is change the eyes as fake reflections are a pet hate of mine.  For a few years now I have used textures from SG RealEyes by Surreality.  I have just checked and they are still available at Daz - just serach on realeyes.   Whike not on sale they are the same price I paid back in 2011.

I have played with the materials over the years and most recently did more chages after following BB settings in the thread on realistics eyes.  So the textures may need to be played with but I find them a good starting point.

Most recent settings were used here

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

About the only thing I can offer is that I think the whites in particular could look a bit moister.

Is that eye textures from the Surreality set?

I'm not Hornet, but it certainly looks like hers.

R_Hatch ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2014 at 10:16 PM

For eye textures that don't have any highlights in the middle of the eye, you can use a Color Math node set to min, and combine the texture with a copy of itself with U_Scale set to -1.

(Example render done in Poser 9 with SSS, IDL and raytrace reflections)

I use this:

NOTE: The promo's have a trans map not burnt in specular. I do not use the transmap, just the texture and real raytrace reflections.

Coming from you I take that as high praise but of course you should take the credit.  Thanks for all the info

Something else to play with, thanks for the suggestion.

The image maps certainly come from the SG RealEyes set from Surreality, as do almost all my character's eyes.  It is quite an expansive set not only with many options but also bump and refelction maps provided.  IHowever I did purchase it in 2011 before SSS was added to Poser.  I have therefore played with the materials along lines of the ones laid out by BB in the recent thread on realistic eyes here at Rendo.  I should however really define 'along the lines of' in that they are all of BB nodes as laid out by him all I have done is changed some of the values as suggested my him in the same thread.

Syyd's Oxygen eyes, transmap removed. Draft quality render, IDL, SSS

Honestly, I don't find the eye transmap objectionable.

Same as above with Syyd's Vanilla Sky eyes.

icandy, are you saying that none of the textures in that set have specular in the map?

The above image uses about the best setting I've come up with so far, but with my own texture map which probably isn't the greatest.

Only some of the "Fantasy" eyes have reflection already on the eyes, but all the realistic eyes are based off real photo's (at least it looks that way) and all the ones I have used do not contain burnt in specular. I really have stopped using any other eyes other than these because no other eyes look this good to me. But it's in the eye of the beholder as they say hehe.

Thanks. She was nice enough to answer my questions and I bought the set last night.

Arki sells Eyedeas 3+ at RDNA.  They are replaclacement figures similar to Blackhearted's eyes.  The reflections are on a separate layer that you can turn off.

In this thread at RDNA is a wonderful shader for eyes.

http://forum.runtimedna.com/showthread.php?65396-SSS-on-Eyes

I used the settings for the eyes in this image:

You can go into the material room and change the iris as you see fit to change for different models.

I'm pretty happy with my shaders (although there's always room for improvement). I just found myself short of realistic underlying textures because most vendors have specular (and often, reflections) right in the texture.

This is a really dumb question but I gotta know... Can I use eye textures made for one figure and use them on a completely different figure? ie. use a good set from v4 and use them on Miki4 without too much hassle?

Believable3D ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2014 at 8:21 PM

I believe you can interchange V4 and M4. For Miki, you'd need to do some Photoshop work, because the UV mapping is completely different.

I used RMMT Life Like  eyes for V4, for my base eyes then added the modified shaders. There are no baked in reflections or specularity in the mr set.  It is sold here in the marketplace.also if you use the shasow overlay, it adds realism, se the read-me.
